Centennial: The Complete Series Immediately

You have to keep two things in mind when watching this 6 disc series:

1. It was filmed in the late 1970's. Technology, make up, and acting are different now.

2. It is not the book. It has to take a lot of short cuts to fit on 6 discs.

That said. It is a solid effort to capture Michener's book, which I have read twice. The first disc does drag a bit and Robert Conrad's fake french accent is annoying at best. The woman playing his white wife is simply terrible and overly melodramatic. But then again her lines are usually awful. But at least the story is interesting and a good setup for the next several discs and the heart of the story.

Up until the last disc the story moves along pretty well. It established several main characters whom you become involved with. Action and writing is pretty good. Yeah, some hokey dialogue and bad aging make up. But I can accept those as 70's film making.

The last disc is simply atrocious. They zip through the 20th century in a rush. I lost track of who was who and found that I didn't really care because the characters were so poorly developed. Decades and generations of people are simply ignored. Then they plop us down into 1976 and I am basically lost.

Andy Griffith, David Janssen, Merle Haggard, and whomever plays the blond reporter are all terrible in their parts. Fifty percent of the last episode is recap which I had to fast forward through. Then it abruptly ends with Merle Haggard singing and more flashbacks. That's the best part of the last episode.

There are some funny and dated moments reminding some of us of what TV quality consisted of in the 70's. Melodramatic acting, over acting, really unconvincing aging as far as makeup and acting, awful acting by several people who have heart attacks, non sensible time jumps. But in all, a pretty fun series. Just do yourself a favor and skip the last disc.Get more detail about Centennial: The Complete Series.

Peanuts: 1960's Collection (A Charlie Brown Christmas / Charlie Brown's All-Stars / It's the Great Pumpkin / You're in Love / He's Your Dog / It Was a Short Summer) Get it now!

Peanuts fans over the age of 42 or "Schulzologists" in general so will really enjoy this! While everyone is familar with a "CB Christmas" and the "great Pumpkin" episodes, some really rare stuff is included here.

I don't believe that "It Was a Short Summer, CB," (1969), "He's Your Dog, CB," (1968), "You're In Love, CB," (1967), or "CB's All Stars" (1966) have been shown any more than twice since their original appearances. In order, these deal with our gang going to summer camp, prodded by Lucy. The arm rasslin' match between Lucy and Snoopy is a hoot. "He's Your Dog" is the direct predecessor for the gang's second feature "Snoopy Come Home" (1972) and has a very direct reference to the latter film. Here, Snoopy's obnoxious and unwanted clowing with the other kids gets him a bid at obedience school at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. Mildly amusing (I liked it better when I saw it as a small child when it first came out), but it's still above much of the other fare of this era.

"You're in Love," is really sweet, one of the few times CB comes out ahead? How? Watch it and you'll see. I wonder why this has seldom been aired since it's first broadcast (I recall seeing it around 1972 when I was in the first grade). "CB's All Stars" is an interesting tale that mixes baseball humor with a touching example of CB's loyalty to his "friends" in spite of their ingratitude. The ending of this is truly touching as well as amusing and says a lot about Linus' true loyalty to CB.

The special feature is a documentary on Vince Guiraldi, the tunesmith behind the wonderful musical themes of these specials. Quite interesting. he appears to have had the perfect personality to do this wonderful music (I had no idea that it was him singing the "Joe Cool" song from "You're Not Elected CB" in 1972). It would be nice, given the fact that this IS about Peanuts in the 60s, if this were to include the Peanuts Ford commercials from earlier in the decade and the early aminated segments from the unsold 1963 documentary "A Boy named Charlie Brown" (not to be confused with the 1969 feature film of the same name). Such is the life of a certified member of the CGA (Cartoon Geeks of America). If you're one, you'll want this!Get more detail about Peanuts: 1960's Collection (A Charlie Brown Christmas / Charlie Brown's All-Stars / It's the Great Pumpkin / You're in Love / He's Your Dog / It Was a Short Summer).

Arsenic and Old Lace Buy Now

If I were to make a list of the best comedy films of all time, I would put "Arsenic and Old Lace" solidly in the #2 spot. 2nd only to
"Bringing Up Baby".
It is non-stop laughs with a family of people that are crazy. Each crazy in a different way. And they play off each other exactly in
exactly the right way to have you laughing so hard that your sides will hurt.
Many call this dark comedy, and to an extent it is. But it doesn`t really play out that way as you watch the film. You never see a
murder or a dead body. All you see are comic results.
The family consists of two elderly sisters and their three nephews. The sisters are two of the nicist old ladies you could possibly
ever run across, except for one tiny detail. They feed arsnic laced wine to lonely old men and bury them in the basement. They see
nothing wrong with this, after all, they look so peaceful once they are dead. They consider it to be one of their charities.
The comedic action starts when Cary Grant, the least crazy nephew, discovers this and tries to figure out what to do about it.
Their are many complications. Including the fact that he has just been married and is supposed to be headed for his honeymoon.
His new bride is quickly becoming as crazy as the rest of the family because her freashly minted groom seems to have all but forgotten
about her in a few short minutes. (She knows nothing of the 12 bodies in the basement)
The other two nephews, one thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt and the other a murderer that is at least sane enough to know he is a murderer,
mix into the farce along with several other semi-nutty characters.
The writing, directing, and acting in this film are all excellent. The comic timing is perfect. What more could you ask of a film?

The Addams Family / Addams Family Values Order Now

Seeing as how every time that other horror family is mentioned in one of my Addams reviews, I promise not to even mention their names.

The Addams Family- I remember seeing this one when I was very young. Before I even saw the original series, I was hooked, including the animated version, which was being rerun on Cartoon Network at the time and the TV remake The New Addams Family (which is good in its own right, but not as good as the original of course). I couldn't have imagined anyone else playing these characters for the big screen (if they had made a movie of the original show in the 60s I'm sure I'd prefer that but that's a rant for another day). Anjelica Huston and the late, great Raul Julia have so much chemistry together, I can't help but be reminded of that same chemistry seen between Carolyn Jones and John Astin. Though due to a higher budget, Gomez can do more amazing feats than he could from the show. Not much is added to Morticia however but she's just as beautiful as ever (and great at her deadpan wit). A lot of my favorite bits from the film come from their scenes, especially when they reminisce about their first meeting at a funeral. Christoher Lloyd does a good job as Fester but I must say I do prefer Jackie Coogan's version. He was more offbeat and funny than Lloyd even after Fester recovers his memory. Christina Ricci is the only other person besides Lisa Loring to play Wednesday. I'm pretty sure she had a hard time keeping a straight face during the entire production. She and Jimmy Workman have a decent chemistry together but I wish they hadn't made Pugsley such an idiot, especially in the show when he was capable of mixing various chemicals. The plot is good but my main problem with the story in this and the sequel is that the main focus isn't the family but Uncle Fester. They make it seem that without him, the family can't function (how Gomez and the family survived for 25 years without him is a mystery). The music was excellent. My favorite music sequence is the party; first when Morticia and Gomez waltz, then reveal the entire party and the Mamushka sequence. Shaiman's version of the original theme is good but I wish it was used more. The only real bother I have is the Hammer songs used, especially the Addams Groove. 5 stars.

Addams Family Values- This one is more in the vein of the original comic strips. A new baby is introduced into the house, causing sibling rivalry. A new nanny tries to kill Fester for his fortune (I liked it better when he was Morticia's brother because now everything revolves around him) and Wednesday and Pugsely are sent to summer camp and meet that guy from NUMB3RS. I have mixed feelings about the sequel. Its not a rehash of the first, except for the whole Fester/fortune gimmick. I like the idea of the children causing havoc in the camp and Fester having a love interest. But I just don't like it as much as the first for some odd reason. The original cast is good, though I don't know why they didn't get the same woman to play Grandmama. Peter MacNicol and Christine Baranski are just plain annoying as the camp counselors (good thing they got roasted but Baranski is one of my favorite actors). Joan Cusack is a delight as the deranged Debbie and I especially like the part when she tells them why she kills people. The original Addams theme is used more in this, especially during my favorite sequence (the Tango in the restaurant). More hip-hop songs are used in this and, like the Hammer songs of the first film, are not that memorable. Not that much to say about this one except its creepier, kookier and ookier. 4 stars.Get more detail about The Addams Family / Addams Family Values.

The Polar Express (Full Screen Edition) Right now

Again, I had the original - but, because the price was right, I upgraded to the blu-ray and gave the older one to my son. Fantastic colors, amazing technology and a wonderful story line. I think it will keep the spirit of Christmas alive in children. This is NOT a political statement folks - but, let's face it, the real meaning of Christmas is being washed away by certain people who have an agenda. Low Price Mulan (Special Edition)

Upon its release, "Mulan" was seen as an improvement over the relatively-forgettable "Hercules". And rightly so. That said, it falls short in comparison to the earlier Disney films of the decade. The songs are subpar, the animation lacks the elegance of "Beauty and the Beast" & "The Little Mermaid", and the characters are anything but memorable. I applaud Disney for the story (yes, I know it's based on a Chinese legend), but that's about it. Thankfully, Disney resumed to top-notch animation a year later with "Tarzan". "Mulan", on the other hand, belongs more to the films they released in the 2000s: they're enjoyable but lack the oh-so-famous magic of their real classics.

Gran Torino (+ BD-Live) [Blu-ray]

I really enjoyed this movie, even though it was difficult at some points to really immerse myself into the story because the acting of Hmong kids was not convincing...I am referring to Sue and Thao....would have been a perfect 5 stars if the acting was good. :-(

Aside from that a very entertaining movie with a lot of expletives and racist comments, but all the same very humorous.

Battlestar Galactica - Season 4.0 Get it now!

The beginning of the end of the best television series I've ever seen. Season 4 picks up immediately after Season 3's awesome finale without skipping a beat and proceeds to blow us away more and more. One of the coolest things about Battlestar Galactica is that unlike many other TV series, whereby the third or fourth season, we just watch it out of habit or to see what happens, Battlestar keeps giving us more and more of a reason to watch. The action and drama don't stop and we are drawn in even more than before as new revelations come about. Another thing I particularly enjoy about Battlestar is that the mysteries are cool and pretty clever, unlike some shows like LOST, where they seem to be tacked-on and have no backbone. The character development continues on as well, seeing our favorites take unexpected turns, twists and even drops. I had better stop here and just say that this a very worthwhile purchase. While it is unfortunate that the box sets for Seasons 2 and 4 were split into two, making us pay more to get them, the show is so good it makes up for it... at least for me. Enjoy.Get more detail about Battlestar Galactica - Season 4.0.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 [Blu-ray] Buy Now

First and foremost, this film is a renter, not an owner!
Great cast of John Travolta, Denzel Washington, John Tuturro,
James Gandolfini and others...yes, it has car crashes, quick edits,
violence, explosions, SWAT, NYC in the backdrop...all the usual suspects.
But that's just it...all the usual ingredients make this film just a mediocre
meal with not much else to offer. I literally found myself guessing what was going
happen before it was going to happen...a bad sign that there's no twists or spins
to draw you in, make you care what happens next...get it?
In closing, as I said in the opening...glad I rented it instead of buying it.Get more detail about The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 [Blu-ray].

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 3 Order Now

In my opinion Season 3 is the best "Sunny" season so far and consequently is a MUST to own for all "Sunny" fans out there. If you're considering buying this collection, then you must already be a die-hard fan and therefor there is no need to go discuss all of the hilarous episodes.

I would have preferred a much more extensive set of Special Featurees however. Surely with this cast there could have been literally hours of out-takes and special features but instead we're provided only 3 "featurettes" and one 15 minute gag reel. In addition, the Commentary with Rob, Charlie and Glen that is listed on the cover of Disc 1 and 2 is nowhere to be found. What's up with that?

In any event, I highly recommend this item

The Office - Season One Decide Now

Here we have the first few episodes of what is now my favorite comedy on TV. But, as with most TV shows we are in the "Groundwork Paradox". When they make a sequel to a great movie, invariably it pales in comparison and is a second rate work (there are a few exceptions). With TV the reverse is often true. In the first season or two of most TV shows you can see the writers and producers feeling out the characters and seeing what works and what doesn't. This is especially true here in the first season of the office. While the episodes Health Care and the Alliance are great, the other episodes fall flat as we are left wondering what to make of the consistently clueless Michael Scott, the tireless sycophant Dwight K Schrute, the relentlessly aloof Jim Halpert and the rest of the staff.

You do not need to see this season to enjoy the others, but it does lay a nice groundwork for the coming episodes. Just be prepared to be shocked and amazed (not necessarily in a good way) by the actions of Michael Scott.
