Charley Varrick

Charley Varrick Review

Charley Varrick is a good film from the 1970's. It is not the best thing Matthau ever did but its a good evenings entertainment. And as in most Matthau against the world movies, he wins in a clever way.

As to this incessant diatribe about the aspect ratio. Ok, its not wide screen. Get over it. The company who put it on DVD knew it had limited appeal and choose not to release it in the wider format. Still looks pretty good on my flat screen. And as to this allegation of "Scan & Pan".
I do not know which DVD you watched, but mine was not scan and pan.
Buy it, its cheap and is a good once a year movie.

Charley Varrick Overview

Charley Varrick is a small-time crook who outfoxes the Mob in this fast-paced offbeat thriller directed by Don Siegel. Academy Award winner Walter Matthau stars in a rare dramatic role, along with the powerful Joe Don Baker, as a tough Mafia hitman. Charley robs small banks with small payrolls. That keeps him out of trouble until he stumbles onto the Mob's secret stash. The chase is on as the Big Boys go after the "Last of the Independents." It's a heart-pounding ride that builds to a fiery airborne climax as Charley makes his last desperate run for the Mexican border and safety.

Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac Ranch Review

I came upon this VHS movie by happenstance. I had never heard of it before. It was very well done. It is about three attractive and colorful sisters who are reunited to go on an adventurous odyssey in search of their father to the Cadillac Ranch. The Cadillac Ranch was a surprise, not any of the possibilities that I thought it might be.

This movie reminds me of "Thelma And Louise" in that the ladies' odyssey was filled with adventure. However, in my opinion, this movie is a much better movie in that it is less violent and is charming. The acting of the three sisters was believable and very moving.

Cadillac Ranch Overview

Three sisters take to the road in this fast-paced adventure filled with romance, laughs larceny and a talented cast!

Airborne

Airborne Review

Possibly the ONLY reason this movie didnt receive an Oscar nomination for best picture was because it happened to be released the same year as Schindlers List - not exactly the best timing for one of the greatest comedic films EVER released!
If you must watch it at home, make certain you order the Bonus Features DVD. Not to spoil anything - but its worth it just for the pure consciousness of the stylin liquid drano, wanna be bullwinkle. I tell you no lies, my friends.
But truly the BEST way to watch this movie is at a local theater, where Airborne is almost always available in limited runs leading up to the summer blockbusters. The IMAX version is a must for hardcore live action sports fans! Too bad everyone doesnt live here in Cali - do they even have IMAX in other parts of the country? Anyways - its all chill, brah...
So how often does this once-in-a-lifetime wave come along? Sadly, only once every 20 years or so. Do NOT miss this film.
A++++++
Props to Jack Black and Seth Green, who prove that picking the right roles early on in your career is WAY more important than having "all the right connections". Adam Sandler, eat your heart out.

Airborne Overview

The way surfer dude Mitchell Goosen sees it, there are two kinds of people: those who surf and those who dont. So when Mitch (Shane McDermott) relocates from surfside California to wintry landlocked Cincinnati, theres just one thing he can do: put on skates and get Airborne! Mitchs skates and principles are put to the test in this stylin comedy co-starring Seth Green (the Austin Powers and Family Guy series) and Brittney Powell. Members of Team RollerbladeÒ add awesome in-line skating stunts and the soundtrack is filled with hot tracks by Ugly Kid Joe, Jeremy Jordan, Steve Miller Band and more. To air isnt just human, dudes. Its necessary. Get Airborne!

Batman: The Movie [Blu-ray]

Batman: The Movie [Blu-ray] Review

There was something that was truly magical and unique about the 1960's, a time when network television was a major conduit for cultural experience, and fad after fad seemed to explode on the scene. With its campy, comedic, take on the classic comic book character, zany super villains, and unique two episode a week format, Batman quickly became a cultural phenomenon, when it ran on ABC in the spring of 1966. Making stars of Adam West as Batman, and Burt Ward as Robin.

20th Century Fox, and producer William Dozier, actually brought two classic characters from the 1930's to television that year. Besides Batman, The Green Hornet, a classic crimefighter who originated in radio serials, also ran on ABC for one season, starring Van Williams as the Hornet, and Bruce Lee as Kato. It is remarkable that neither Batman, or The Green Hornet, is not yet available on DVD.

Batman: The Movie was released in the summer of 1966, after the first season of Batman had already aired, and was basically an extension of the series. The characters, style, and settings, were already familiar to audiences at the time. The movie got into detail about things like the Batcave, stately Wayne Manor, and Bruce Wayne's personal life. Exotic modes of transportation, the Batcopter, and ultracool Batboat, thrilled and delighted fans. It was a brilliant idea to pit the caped crusaders against four supervillains. Together, The Penguin (Burgess Meredith), The Riddler (Frank Gorshin), The Joker (Cesar Romero), and The Catwoman (Lee Meriwether), made up the 'United Underworld'. These classic characters from the comics, had already made the transition to television, thanks to the superb performances of Meredith, Gorshin, Romero, and Julie Newmar during the first season of Batman. Newmar however, was unavailable to play The Catwoman. Sexy, svelte, and a former Miss America, Lee Meriwether (Time Tunnel, Barnaby Jones) was the purrfect choice for the role as the feline villainess.

The film also features regular characters, Alfred the butler (Alan Napier), Commissioner Gordon (Neil Hamilton), Chief O'Hara (Stafford Repp), and Aunt Harriet (Madge Blake). The plot is rather silly, and largely designed to showcase the film's many action sequences. The United Underworld have kidnapped Commodore Schmidlapp (Reginald Denny), to get his invention, a dehydrator ray. The device can remove all the water from a human body, a leave only a pile of powder. Hoping to lure Batman to the crooks dockside hideout, The Catwoman, in disguise as Miss Kitka, a Russian reporter, gets involved with Bruce Wayne, setting him up to be kidnapped, and taken on a night flight on one of the Penguin's flying umbrellas. Batman makes a memorable, and exasperating attempt to dispose of a bomb on a pier. The Penguin masquerading as Schmidlapp, is taken to the Batcave with five dehydrated crooks who are destroyed, when they are rehydrated with heavy water. The villains proceed with their plot, and dehydrate the members of the United World Headquarters, and head out to sea in the Penguin's sub. The Dynamic Duo force the sub to the surface, and finish off the crooks in a furious battle. Adam West and Burt Ward get a heavy duty workout, on the land, in the air, and at sea. The film made them even bigger stars. Lee Meriwether rocks, in a dual role. And Burgess Meredith is magnificent, as the cranky Penguin.

The multitude of extras in this edition is fantastic. In one commentary track, West and Ward, share some warm and humorous remembrances. Writer Lorenzo Semple has a more detached view of the film, and shares his thoughts in a second commentary track. There are also a number of excellent featurettes covering various facets of the film, the TV series, and the Batmania phenomenon. The interactive Batmobile feature is highly detailed, though it takes a while to go through. The whole package is delightful, and looks fantastic on blu-ray. The price is very reasonable, and is simply a must have for any Batfan of the 1966 program, particularly as the release of original series does not appear imminent.

Batman: The Movie [Blu-ray] Overview

When Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) get a tip that Commodore Schmidlapp (Reginald Denny) is in danger aboard his yacht, they launch a rescue mission. But the tip is a set-up by four of the most powerful villains ever, who seek to defeat the Dynamic Duo once and for all! Armed with a dehydrator that can turn humans into dust, the fearsome foursome intends to take over the world! Can the Caped Crusaders use their high-flying heroism and groovy gadgetry to declaw Catwoman (Lee Meriwether), ice the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), upstage the Joker (Cesar Romero), and stump the Riddler (Frank Gorshin) in time?

Batman: The Movie [Blu-ray] Specifications

Holy camp site, Batman! After a fabulously successful season on TV, the campy comic book adventure hit the big screen, complete with painful puns, outrageous supervillains, and fights punctuated with word balloons sporting such onomatopoeic syllables as "Pow!," "Thud!," and "Blammo!" Adam West's wooden Batman is the cowled vigilante alter ego of straight-arrow millionaire Bruce Wayne and Bruce Ward's Robin (a.k.a. Dick Grayson, Bruce's young collegiate protégé) his overeager sidekick in hot pants. Together they battle an unholy alliance of Gotham City's greatest criminals: the Joker (Cesar Romero, whooping up a storm), the Riddler (giggling Frank Gorshin), the Penguin (cackling Burgess Meredith), and the purr-fectly sexy Catwoman (Lee Meriwether slinking in a skin-tight black bodysuit). The criminals are, naturally, out to conquer the world, but with a little help from their unending supply of utility belt devices (bat shark repellent, anyone?), our dynamic duo thwarts their nefarious plans at every turn. Since the TV show ran under 30 minutes an episode (with commercials), the 105-minute film runs a little thin--a little camp goes a long way--but fans of the small-screen show will enjoy the spoofing tone throughout. Leslie H. Martinson directs Lorenzo Semple's screenplay like a big-budget TV episode minus the cliffhanger endings. --Sean Axmaker

Charlie's Angels (Superbit Two-Disc Deluxe Edition)

Charlie's Angels (Superbit Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) Review

The greatest thing about `Charlie's Angels' is that it knows what it is and totally embraces it. I mean, the film is not trying to be a serious take on a television classic. Instead, this film is delivering up a comedic homage to the show that perfectly balances parody with sentiment to create something fresh, funny, engaging and unforgettable. With witty dialog, surprisingly thoughtful character development and fight sequences that can certainly tangle with the best of them; `Charlie's Angels' is one-hundred-percent delightfully tacky fun!

The film centers on the Natalie, Dylan and Alex, three super spy action chicks working for Charlie, their mysterious boss. Their next job has to do with a kidnapped programmer and a creepy `thin man', but really...plot?

Let's talk about hilarious comedic timing and overt sensuality combined with the perfect amount of testosterone bashing action sequences!

Casting Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu as the trio of kick-butt chicks was genius, even if I was semi-doubtful at first. Diaz has splendid comedic timing is flawless and she really works that here, giving Natalie that geeky sheik flirtatious ditz vibe. Lucy Liu has such an edgy strength to her, and her dominating sensual delivery is effortless and tantalizing. Barrymore is just pure joy. I love the spunky neurotic tones she delivers to Dylan, giving her this sensually commanding presence that gives way to a humanity that flourishes with her genuine spirit.

They are just fantastic here.

I can't think of a single thing wrong with this film. I am not the biggest fan of the sequel, only because they played a lot of the same gags and played around too much with the CGI. What I like about this film is that the action scenes play very authentic and realistic despite their outlandishly lavish qualities. The film is exciting and unpredictable (in that I totally didn't predict this would be so much fun) and with hilarious performances by the entire cast, including Bill Murray (perfect casting decision), Matt LeBlanc, Tom Green and a genuinely creepy Sam Rockwell (not to mention Tim Curry and Crispin Glover), `Charlie's Angels' turns out to be the perfect popcorn munching blockbuster!

Charlie's Angels (Superbit Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) Specifications

For every TV-into-movie success like The Fugitive, there are dozens of uninspired films like The Mod Squad. Happily--and surprisingly--this breezy update of the seminal '70s jiggle show falls into the first category, with Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore (who also produced), and Lucy Liu starring as the hair-tossing, fashion-setting, kung fu-fighting trio employed by the mysterious Charlie (voiced by the original Charlie, John Forsythe). When a high-tech programmer (Sam Rockwell) is kidnapped, the angels seek out the suspects, with the daffy Bosley (Bill Murray in a casting coup) in tow. A happy, cornball popcorn flick, Charlie's Angels is played for laughs with plenty of ribbing references to the old TV show as well as modern caper films like Mission: Impossible. McG, a music video director making his feature film debut (usually a death warrant for a movie's integrity), infuses the film with plenty of Matrix-style combat pyrotechnics, and the result is the first successful all-American Hong Kong-style action flick. Plenty of movies boast a New Age feminism that has their stars touting their sexuality while being their own women, but unlike something as obnoxious as Coyote Ugly, Angels succeeds with a positive spin on Girl Power for the new millennium (Diaz especially sizzles in her role of crack super agent/airhead blonde). From the send-up of the TV show's credit sequence to the outtakes over the end credits, Charlie's Angels is a delight. --Doug Thomas

Kekko Kamen

Kekko Kamen Review

That Go Nagai! His creations of anime characters such as "Cutey Honey", "Devilman" and many other popular titles have won many anime fans hearts but way back in 1991, "Kekko Kamen" was an anime that I never saw coming.

During those old school anime days, Go Nagai has been known as one of the great human treasures of Japanese manga and of the anime industry.

Nagai has been credited for both modern horror comics/anime and the invention of the mecha genre but Nagai and perverted anime? It's just something that I couldn't fathom. Could it be possible?

So, when rumors started swirling around that Go Nagai has an animation featuring a nude female superhero with a unique special move. I heard it was hentai but also unlike hentai that was out at the time (usually it was "Urotsukidoji" or "Cream Lemon" related). No sex scenes but nudity and loads of perverted humor.

When "Kekko Kamen"finally came out in the U.S., I couldn't wait to check it out!

The storyline of "Kekko Kamen" revolves around an interesting school known as "Big Toenail of Satan's Spartan Instituteof Higher Education" ran by the perverted, masked principal and a lecherous teacher who enjoys punishing the students (and always wearing a surgical mask).

The first OAV is about disciplining those who don't do well in their tests and unfortunately for sleepy student Takahashi Mayumi, she accidentally is caught sleeping and she has to be punished.

Who to punish Mayumi is the much feared Nazi dominatrix.

As Mayumi is chained up and her clothes being whipped off her, who is to save her but a masked, nude and well-endowed superhero named Kekko Kamen. Multi-talented with great fighting skills and special moves such as "Muff-ication", Kekko Kamen fights for justice, freedom and the naked truth.

And in the first OAV, Kekko Kamen uses S&M techniques to overpower the Nazi dominatrix to save Ms. Takahashi.

And in the next three episodes, Mayumi will continue to get kidnapped (and removed of her clothing) by the principal and the teacher as they try to find ways to capture and defeat Kekko Kamen.

"Kekko Kamen" was definitely one of the few anime at the time to start the perverted hentaish (without the sex) that we see right now but the anime was so over the top that the storyline and characters have not been duplicated.

OAV 2 features Kekko Kamen vs. a gym coach, OAV 3 features Kekko Kamen vs. an exchanged student armed with tentacles (what perverted anime can not have tentacles) and OAV 4 features Kekko Kamen vs. a perverted picture-taking samurai who just can't stop taking naughty photos of the girls on campus.

It's been well over a decade since I watched "Kekko Kamen" and watching it today, still works.

I guess perverted humor hardly gets old but I couldn't help but laugh because this anime is so over-the-top and perverted.

Unfortunately there are only 4 OAV's but for those who want more, you can also find the original manga published by Shueisha and also the "Kekko Kamen" live movies.

As for the animation, since this is old school anime, don't expect something super.

The anime features the English and Japanese vocal track in 2.0 and for special features, original character sketches are included.

There's no way I can knock "Kekko Kamen" because it's so entertaining.

No matter how old the anime is, it still doesn't disappoint. I can't describe how zany, fun and perverted this anime is but I definitely can recommend checking this DVD out.

Kekko Kamen Overview

A beautiful young girl named Mayumi joins a top-notch announcer school with draconian disciplinary standards. Because she had spent her childhood abroad, Mayumi soon falls behind her classmates. Though subjected to merciless flayings by her teachers, she continues in her quest to become an anchor Woman. While being beaten by especially cruel teacher, strapped to a rocking horse clad only in her underwear a woman appears identifying herself as the "Kekko Kamen", completely naked except for a red mask covering her face, , she stands up to defend the tormented Mayumi and battle the sadists of Manglifon school.

Winners and Sinners

Winners and Sinners Review

Winners and Sinners (aka Five Lucky Stars) is a film that I liked better the second time I watched it. After shaken off all expectations of a "Jackie and Sammo" film and accepted the uneven and scattered nature of this ensemble movie I enjoyed it more. This movie was more important though when it came out then it is considered today. Jackie had a recent flop in Dragon Lord, though I did enjoy the movie, and Golden Harvest had been in a bit of a slump. Producer Leonard Ho got the idea from Cannonball Run (which Jackie Chan and Michael Hui had parts in) to create an assemblage of popular Hong Kong stars to star in this film. Winners and Sinners was a success spawning several sequels and reunited Jackie with Seven Little Fortune alums Sammo and Yuen Biao (who helped with martial art choreography; though his cameo as a fellow CID officer is less than a minute as a quick fight versus Jackie.)

The Five Lucky Stars are cons who after spending their time in jail take a straight job with a cleaning company led by Curly aka Jack So (played by real life democracy advocate John Shum) who was framed for instigating a crowd to do harm in a parody of his real-life exhorts. The other four are Ranks aka Larry (Stanley Fung), Teapot (Sammo Hung who also directed this) as a cat burglar, Vaseline (Charlie Chin) a slick thief, and Exhaust Pipe (Richard Ng who performance was nominated as Best Actor for the Hong Kong Film Awards) who is bad at thieving automobile parts. They all live with Jack's sister known as Sis (Cherie Chung.) Unfortunately they spend way too much time trying to get her attention, leaving a lull in the early parts of the film. However there are some great gags such as Richard Ng thinking he is invisible with Wu Ma's great response to shatter his misconception - "...pretty good vision even when it comes to small objects" and a blind couple playing a Rod Stewart song at a carnival.

There are some great stunt and fight scenes led by 7086 (Jackie Chan) a bumbling CID officer who beats up wrong suspects, kills his superior's turtle and accidentally throws a kid's ice cream away. When he is not destroying everything in his path he is part of an awesome stunt scene involving skates (at least he learned something good from The Big Brawl though he is doubled on some of the trickier roller tricks) and part of a good fight scene in a cafeteria with a little person with horrific teeth. The "ouch factor" is quite high in one scene where a villain gets kicked out of a window and lands on a concrete ledge than falls to the ground. I have the highest respect for these stuntmen who kill themselves for our enjoyment. This film definitely deserved the Hong Kong award for best Action Choreography.

The story is mostly non-existent until the boilerplate briefcase full of counterfeit bills makes it's appearance. It belongs to Chan Chiu (James Tien always good as a cigar chomping villain) who is head of a triad gang. He was going to trade it to another triad gang led by Ho Man but it got intercepted and eventually and unknowingly in the possession of the Five Lucky Stars Cleaning Company. Of course, Agent 7086 wants this briefcase too.

But this film was not made for the plot. It was made to be a crowd pleasing mixture of comedy and action, both of which it does very well. It parodies the more serious films with scenes such as Charlie Chin and Fung Hark On doing a martial art pose-down fight and the final action scene that blends comedy and stunts takes place in a warehouse which gets me thinking on how many films I have seen that have the last fight scene in a warehouse (rhetorical thought of course). There are some problems with the film besides the inert beginning including he abysmal electronic soundtrack that is eerily reminiscent of Heart of Dragon's soundtrack and the misuse of Lam Ching Ying as Chan's butler Chan. Overall this is an enjoyable film that is fun to watch that showcases several outstanding Hong Kong comedians and several outstanding action performers.

Winners and Sinners Overview

This hilarious farce follows a pack of small-time crooks. Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 04/05/2005 Starring: Jackie Chan Run time: 107 minutes Rating: R Director: Sammo Hung

Winners and Sinners Specifications

"It's an epic!" howls one of the fighters in the free-for-all finale, overwhelmed by the sheer number of characters that get crowded into a single room, all pounding away at each other. Indeed, every comic actor and most of the leading action stars in Hong Kong in 1983 seem to have been squeezed into this amiable kung fu comedy--there are even tiny cameo appearances by several famous movie directors (Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, Wu Ma). This picture marks the debut of a loose-knit group of farce-action stalwarts, the Five Lucky Stars, stumble-bum reformed crooks who attempt to go straight by setting up a cleaning service, but can't seem to help getting into tons of trouble. The Stars went on to appear in several sequels, including My Lucky Stars. Jackie Chan, as a cop pursuing the hapless crooks, is essentially the straight man here, and he seems to be using a stunt double in some of his big scenes. This is a close as Chan ever got to phoning in a performance. --David Chute

Muppet Treasure Island [Region 2]

Muppet Treasure Island [Region 2] Review

What happens when you mix one of "the" classic pirate stories with the wonderfully wacky world of the muppets and the delightfully villanous Tim Curry? Muppet Treasure Island, of course!

I first saw this movie years ago and instantly fell in love with it. Having already been a fan of the Muppets - and having loved "A Muppet Christmas Carol", another wonderful Muppet adapation of classic literature - I was not disappointed at all!

Kevin Bishop does a wonderful job as the delightfully innocent Jim Hawkins, a simple boy who wants to go off to sea like his father did, but to whom "pirates" are an abstract concept. He's easily beguiled by appearances until he's literally faced with the proof and must make a decision about those who he calls friends.

As in "A Muppet Christmas Carol" Gonzo and Rizzo are probably my two favorite Muppets. The interaction and the humor between the two of them has me roaring with laughter every single time they speak. (Gonzo: "That's right, we'd be out searching for that treasure, sailing the seven seas on a five-year mission, boldly going where no man has gone before! Say that's catchy!" and later... Rizzo: "Yeah, I'll watch for him, if he's delivering a pizza!") Of course, there is also wonderful comedic timing from the other muppets, particularly the two heckling Muppets, and some great one-liners from Kermit (I'm a frog...slippery hands?!), Miss Piggy (I'm a pig, I need committment!)

Of course, the real coup de grace for me in this film is Tim Curry as the deliciously evil Long John Silver. I absolutely love movies where Tim Curry gets to play the bad guy, and he doesn't fail to disappoint here either. Mr. Curry has said in interviews that this was one of his favorite and most memorable roles to play, and you can see how much he's enjoying it throughout the entire movie!

In addition, the music is amazing, the action (especially the fight scenes) is enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, and the fact that this is an adaptaion of an amazing piece of classic literature is enough to thrill and delight me, since I am an English teacher who sometimes has difficulty getting my students interested in "the classics".

Definitely a five-star product all around...you will not be disappointed by this movie unless you hate the Muppets!

Muppet Treasure Island [Region 2] Overview

Kids love this Muppet take on Robert Louis Stevenson's pirate classic, about the pirate Long John Silver (Tim Curry) and his takeover of a ship in order to track down buried treasure. His friend and then nemesis is earnest cabin boy Jim Hawkins (Kevin Bishop), who teams with the captain of the ship (Kermit the Frog) and several shipmates (including Gonzo, Ratso, and Fozzie) to foil Long John's nefarious plot. An odd subplot finds Captain Kermit stopping at a desert island to find his long-lost love (Miss Piggy--who else?). The Muppets have not lost their wild sense of humor, which works on enough levels to amply entertain children and their parents in imaginative fashion. --Marshall Fine

Tears of the Black Tiger

Tears of the Black Tiger Review

Thai cinema has certainly come a long way in recent years. "Bangkok Dangerous" and "Last Life in the Universe" are just two of the more interesting Thai films of the past decade. Now comes "Tears of the Black Tiger," a stylistic hybrid that brings together the cinematic excesses of Douglas Sirk and Sergio Leone, with a smattering of Quentin Tarrentino. Its director, Wisit Sasanatieng certainly wears his influences on his sleeve! The storyline and dialogue are strictly from hunger, but the voice-over narration can be hauntingly beautiful. It involves a poor boy who falls in love with the governor's daughter. They are separated in childhood and then reunited as adults. In the meantime, the girl has become engaged to a policeman, and the boy has linked up with a band of outlaws and is now known as the Black Tiger. His male-bonding with one of the outlaws is reminiscent of the Monty Clift/Arthur Kennedy relationship in "Red River." It's all very cliched and yet strikingly original (I half expected a Brokeback angle). The music is folkish, the colors pastel, and the violence over the top. But somehow it makes an impression; this is a film that will continue to haunt me.

Tears of the Black Tiger Feature

Tears of the Black Tiger Overview

CLR NR

Tears of the Black Tiger Specifications

Imagine John Ford (The Searchers), Jean-Luc Godard (Weekend), and John Waters (Pink Flamingos) collaborating on an insane 1950s melodrama, drenched in succulent Technicolor--rose-petal reds, turquoise blues, saffron yellows, and Pepto-Bismol pinks--and you're just barely encompassing the cinematic delirium of Tears of the Black Tiger. This fever dream of a movie features rival gunslingers, a poor farmboy and the daughter of a wealthy landowner, a murdered father, bloody revenge, a forced marriage, and a half-dozen other cliches stitched into a preposterous yet weirdly engaging story. But the story isn't the point; director Wisit Sasanatieng takes every opportunity to dive into a different style or device, ranging from delicate shots of a lovely girl in a mint-green gazebo to spewing gore and full-on battle with machine guns and grenade-launchers. The sets are often blatantly theatrical, the lighting exaggerated, and the acting ranges from wooden to maniacal. In short, this Thai movie is like nothing you've ever seen, born of a deep moviemania and unbridled chutzpah, and you owe it to yourself to watch it. --Bret Fetzer

Sharpe's Regiment

Sharpe's Regiment Review

Now, Now. After eight previous Sharpe episodes, I might be tired of the Napoleon Wars, too. Fortunately, writer Charles Wood and Director Tom Clegg give this British TV adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's novels a fine change of pace.

When Major Richard Sharpe's (Sean Bean) South Essex regiment is about to be disbanded, he and Sergeant Harper (Daragh O'Malley) travel back to England to find new recruits. Unfortunately, Sharpe's old enemy Sir Henry Simmerson (Michael Cochrane) and Secretary of War Lord Fenner (Nicholas Farrell) are up to no good in organizing the South Essex's second battalion. Simmerson's niece Jane Gibbons (Abigail Cruttenden) decides to help Sharpe when he and Harper go undercover and reenlist in the second battalion.

There are plenty of ladies in Sharpe's Regiment, but the politics and 19th century boot camp stylings give this film a different vibe. We've seen Sharpe whip his men into shape before. Unfortunately this time, Sharpe and Harper are on the receiving end-and it's nasty. We only see Spain and the Chosen Men at the beginning and end of the show, but in-between we are treated to period London, high society, and crooked politicians. Its fun to see how Sharpe is treated back home: loved by old friends, hated by politicians, loved by the Prince Regent. Sharpe's show stopping rescue of the Second Battalion is a fun twist on those unloving Sharpe folks.

Sean Bean shows his worth in Sharpe's Regiment. We see him living it up in London with a woman or two, but he's shy before the Regent, unaccustomed to royal balls. Bean gives another dimension to Sharpe as he tries to help the younger recruits who aren't up to snuff. Likewise Daragh O'Malley expands on the Irish factor of ever loyal Harper. He's serious, yet full of humor.

Caroline Langrishe as Lady Anne Camoynes is great fun. Her relationship with Sharpe is an unusual one, but she has purpose to her methods. Unfortunately, Abigail Cruttenden is a miss as Jane Gibbons. It's horrible to dislike Sean Bean's future wife, but the character is by nature rushed, forced, and the wrong fit for Sharpe. Her wishy washy and whiney ways make it odd that Sharpe would fall for her so quickly-especially since his mild obsession with Jane isn't explained here as it is in the books. But alas, there's a few more random women to be had in Regiment, and there's villains a plenty. All the higher ups are slime, and Cochrane as Simmerson is as slick as ever. It's great fun to see these `filth' get their due.

The England at home locales is another pleasant change of pace in Sharpe's Regiment. Some things seem crowded or small scale, but I imagine some of the pubs and salacious alleyways were so. The pomp and ceremony could have been bigger, but it all looks accurate enough. The marshes that Sharpe and Harper give chase through look like a lot of messy fun, and yet they're picturesque at the same time. Some of it, however, can seem silly: two men besting incompetent pompous snots on horseback over and over again. The costumes are also a bit silly; Golf caps and pom pom balls with white jumpsuits amidst Full Metal Jacket 19th Century style. It's very strange to see our boys dressed so, even though it allows for plenty of time to get down and dirty. The absurdity is poked at onscreen, and everyone looks to be having fun.

Sharpe's Regiment is everything this series is about-authentic recreations of Napoleonic England, good boys battling adventure and political intrigue, bad guys getting their due. Available individually or in the series set; Sharpe's Regiment is an offbeat, but fine edition to the series.

The Monster Squad (Two-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition)

The Monster Squad (Two-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition) Review

Fred Dekker's nostalgic cult-classic, "The Monster Squad," concerns a group of prepubescents who idolize and live through monster movies. Together in their treehouse, they escape the world through their love of all things sci-fi and horror, much to the confusion of their teachers and parents. When fiction becomes fact and Dracula descends on their home-turf with a few buddies in tow, it's up to the kids to save not only themselves, but the future of mankind as well.

Co-written by Shane Black ("Lethal Weapon"), much of the film's energy comes from the hilarious dialog given to the child actors, who come across as not only likable, but believable as well. In a genre where child actors are usually maligned, it's quite a relief to find a cast so young that can carry a movie so well. It's surprising, then that none of the children went on to have budding careers (save for Jason Hervey who went on to TV's The Wonder Years").

Dekker, who serves as both director and co-writer, gives his film a fun, feel-good vibe, that makes the film more family friendly than the average genre fare, but not at the expense of the audience's enjoyment. No matter what age you are, you'll find yourself laughing and cheering along with "The Monster Squad," which is precisely how the film found its audience on video in the years since its release. Seeking a good old monster mash with heart? Look no further.

The DVD, released 20 years later, comes with all of the trimmings you'd expect after being forced to wait so long. Commentary, interviews with the grown-up cast, restrospective pieces -- it's all there and certainly worth shelling out for.

Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold

Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold Review

Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold was released in theater on June 5, 1995 and is one hour and twenty-five minutes long. Attack of 60 Foot Centerfold has nothing to do with the Attack of 50 Ft. Woman. This movie has three beautiful women trying to become Plaything of The Year. Tim, the photographer for all three finalists for Plaything of the Year models, gets Angel drunk the night before the photo shoot. Angel wakes up with a hangover and does not look beautiful. Angel Grace drinks to many vials of beauty potion and becomes 60 feet tall. The nudity in this picture is brief. You get a full nude shot of Angel when we first see her at 60 feet tall and there are some breast shots of all three ladies during the film. No full nudity any other time during the picture or of the other two ladies. The special effects are average for that time period. Overall I liked the movie. Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold gets a B+.

Hancock (Two-Disc Unrated Edition)

Hancock (Two-Disc Unrated Edition) Review

Have seen Will Smith since his first commercials for "The Fresh Prince..." and was immediately struck by the talent. He has done a lot of great work, and, with all of the genre has had his bad ones. This movie, however, was such a simple minded, disconnected mess, that the only thing worth watching was the HD and if someone other then Mr. Smith had been the driver in the "plot" the whole thing would have been an inglorious spoof of really bad movies. Let's hope he'll do something soon that showcases the talent and not just his boxoffice draw.

Hancock (Two-Disc Unrated Edition) Overview

Academy Award® nominee Will Smith (Best Actor, The Pursuit of Happyness, 2006) stars in this action-packed comedy as Hancock, a sarcastic, hard-living and misunderstood superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public. When Hancock grudgingly agrees to an extreme makeover from idealistic publicist Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman, Juno), his life and reputation rise from the ashes and all seems right again--until he meets a woman (2003 Academy Award® winner Charlize Theron, Best Actress, Monster) with similar powers to his and the key to his secret past.

Hancock (Two-Disc Unrated Edition) Specifications

Hancock turns the standard superhero movie inside-out: The title character (Will Smith) can fly, has superstrength, and is invulnerable, but he's also a sloppy, alcoholic jerk who causes millions of dollars in property damage whenever he bothers to fight crime. When he saves the life of a public-relations agent named Ray (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development), Ray decides to improve Hancock's image--starting by having Hancock surrender himself to the authorities and go to prison for his lawless behavior. The idea is that once he's in prison, the crime rate will go up, and people will start to realize Hancock might be of value after all. This is only the first act of Hancock--from there, the movie takes several clever turns that shouldn't be revealed. Hancock isn't a great movie (among other things, director Peter Berg overuses close-ups with a hand-held camera to a degree that may cause motion sickness), but it is an extremely entertaining one. The script, which holds together far better than most superhero movies, has a propulsive plot, good dialogue, some compassion for its characters, and even an actual idea or two. The spectacular action at least gestures towards obeying the laws of physics, which actually makes the special effects more vivid. The three leads (Smith, Bateman, and Charlize Theron as Ray's wife, Mary) deftly balance the movie's mixture of comedy, action, and drama. All in all, a smart subversive twist on a genre that all too often takes itself all too seriously. --Bret Fetzer

Gotcha!

Gotcha! Review

Wow, talk about a flashback. This was a great movie, and certainly personified the culture and politics "back in the day". However, I am still waiting for T.A.G.:The Assassination Game, the other campus thriller based on a similar game in Gotcha!, to be released. If anything, just to have the music theme from T.A.G.

Gotcha! Overview

A ucla student goes to paris with his buddy and meets a czech beauty who rules him to east berlin. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 04/12/2005 Starring: Anthony Edwards Alex Rocco Run time: 101 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Jeff Kanew

Gotcha! Specifications

Before he started losing his hair (which gave his baby face the maturity it needed for him to be taken seriously as a doctor on E.R.), Anthony Edwards was the quintessential juvenile lead, college division. That is what he plays here: a college kid who is campus champ at an assassination game called Gotcha (that uses fake guns). Then he goes on a summer vacation behind the Iron Curtain (before it came tumbling down) and falls for a female operative (Linda Fiorentino), who not only uses him as an unsuspecting courier for spy stuff but makes him a fall guy, as well. When he finally extricates himself from the trouble, the trouble follows him back to campus. Silly and far-fetched, though Edwards has that wounded-puppy look down perfectly. --Marshall Fine

Ocean's Thirteen (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD)

Ocean's Thirteen (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) Review

The last time we saw Danny Ocean's crew, they were paying back ruthless casino mogul Terry Benedict after stealing millions from him. However, it's been a while since they've come back together, which is all about to change. When one of their own, Reuben Tishkoff builds a hotel with known casino owner Willy Banks, the last thing he ever wanted was to get cut out of the deal personally by the loathsome Banks. Banks' attitude even goes so far as to finding the amusement in Tishkoff's misfortune when the double crossing lands Reuben in the hospital because of a heart attack. However, Danny and his crew won't stand for Banks and what he's done to a friend. Uniting with their old enemy Benedict, who himself has a vendetta against Banks, the crew is out to pull off a major plan. One that will unfold on the night Banks' newest hot spot opens up, when the crew is out to bankrupt one of the city's most despised businessmen. But they're not in this for the money, but for the revenge. I highly recommend it, its cool, funny slick and most importantly of all, very cool.

Ocean's Thirteen (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) Overview

It's bolder. Riskier. The most dazzling heist yet. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and more reteam with director Steven Soderbergh for a split-second caper that stacks the deck with wit, style and cool. Danny Ocean again runs the game, so no rough stuff. No one gets hurt. Except for double-crossing Vegas kingpin Willy Bank (Al Pacino). Ocean's crew will hit him where it hurts: in his wallet. On opening night of Bank's posh new casino tower The Bank, every turn of a card and roll of the dice will come up a winner for bettors. And they'll hit him in his pride, making sure the tower doesn't receive a coveted Five Diamond Award. That's just the start of the flimflams. The boys are out to break The Bank. Place your bets!

Ocean's Thirteen (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) Specifications

George Clooney is one, Brad Pitt is two, Matt Damon three... well, let's just assume there are 13 collaborators in this installment of Steven Soderbergh's profitable caper franchise. We're back in Las Vegas for Ocean's Thirteen, where the boys plot to shut down the brand-new venture of a backstabbing hotelier (Al Pacino) because the guy double-crossed the now-ailing Reuben (Elliott Gould). If you look at the plot too closely, the entire edifice collapses (hey, how about those Chunnel-digging giant drills?), but Soderbergh conjures up a visual style that swings like Bobby Darin at the Copa. Other than the movie-star dazzle, the main reason to see the film is Soderbergh's uncanny feel for how the widescreen frame can float through the neon spaces of Vegas or sort through groups of characters sitting in hotel rooms talking (he shot the film himself, under his pseudonym Peter Andrews).

The film doesn't give enough time to goofballs Casey Affleck and Scott Caan (whose riffs made Ocean's Twelve worth seeing), although it provides comic stuff for a fun roster of actors, including Eddie Izzard, David Paymer, and Bob ("Super Dave") Einstein. Meanwhile, Ellen Barkin makes a fetching assistant for Pacino, and Pacino himself, his hair dyed Trumpian orange, is content to gnaw on some ham for the duration. Biggest puzzle about the two sequels is why George Clooney seems content to retreat from centerstage. Still, his Hemingwayesque conversations with Pitt are an amusing form of male shorthand, and even as the movie overstays its welcome during a long finale, Clooney's easy sense of cool makes it all seem acceptable. --Robert Horton

Walker, Texas Ranger - The First Season

Walker, Texas Ranger - The First Season Review

The Walker, Texas Ranger (First Season) DVD collection made a wonderful Christmas gift for my grandmother. She just loved it, and to be able to watch the entire season in one sitting was the best. The shipping time was wonderful as well. It was kind of a last minute gift, and it couldn't have arrived at a better time!

Walker, Texas Ranger - The First Season Overview

This DVD contains the first three pilot episodes, as well as the first full season of Walker, Texas Ranger.

Texas Ranger Cordell Walker, one of the last old-fashioned heroes in the West, is a protective friend but a relentless foe who will stop at nothing to bring a criminal to justice.

Walker, Texas Ranger - The First Season Specifications

An unofficial Chuck Norris fact: With apologies to Al Gore, global warming does not cause hurricanes. They are caused by the wind generated by Chuck Norris' flurry of roundhouse kicks to the head. Which is why this seven-disc set will blow you away. After Norris's movie career stalled, Walker: Texas Ranger revived his career and catapulted him to international icon status of Hasselhoff proportions. He has since been transformed into an affectionate punchline for the likes of Conan O'Brien and the purveyors of the Official Chuck Norris facts website ("Those aren't credits that roll after Walker: Texas Ranger. It is actually a list of fatalities that occurred during the making of the episode."). Co-created by future Oscar-winner Paul Haggis (Crash), Walker: Texas Ranger is a tailor-made vehicle for Norris, whose eponymous character dispenses somewhat suspect justice. "You screwed up," one particularly nasty miscreant tells Walker. "You forgot to read us our rights. Walker obliges, but not before kicking him into submission, "You have the right to remain silent." Walker's methods may perturb Asst. D.A. Alex Cahill (Sheree J. Wilson), but they sure come in handy when she is menaced, Cape Fear-style, by the recently freed corrupt sheriff she sent to jail ("Borderline") or kidnapped by a cult leader ("In the Name of God").

There are three crucial elements for a great Walker episode: A particularly vile villain (drug dealers, rapists, baby-stealing politicians), coolly delivered Chuck-isms ("When I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you," reprised from the great Code of Silence), and, to quote Jimmy Trivette (Clarence Gilyard), Walker's new, more by-the-book partner, the "squinty-eyed make-my-day stuff" that Walker punishingly dispenses near the 40-minute mark of nearly every episode. When you've got Chuck Norris, you don't need A-list guest stars, but Walker's first season does feature some familiar faces, including the future Spider-Man Tobey Maguire ("The Prodigal Son"), Stuart Whitman ("The Reunion"), and a post-Wonder Years Danica "Winnie" McKellar ("Stolen Lullaby"). Norris may not be Oscar or Emmy material, but watching Walker unfailingly lay out the bad guys and making the guilty pay is the essence of comfort television. As Trivette says, "I hate to admit; the man is good." In short: don't mess with Texas! --Donald Liebenson

Roadside Prophets

Roadside Prophets Review

Get on a Harley and ride cross country, oh, actually, ride to Nevada to bury a guy you barely knew. John Doe plays Joe Mosley, a factory worker who tries to do something righteous for a fellow biker. He encounters all kinds of people from all different social statures, and he is a rebel, but a quiet rebel. Then comes along Adam Horovitz (Sam) and the journey becomes an adventure. Everyone should see this movie. Well...every lawyer and doctor and business person who doesn't have time for this movie, needs to slow down and watch this movie. The rest of us should have already seen it, if not, "GO NOW"! Plus, Flea is in the movie. I always turn new people on to this movie and play the game, "Find Flea in the movie".

Roadside Prophets Feature

Roadside Prophets Overview

Rockers John Doe (X) and Adam Horovitz (The Beastie Boys) hit the road and encounter an offbeat assortment of fringe dwellers, philosophers and mifits in one of the most unusual films to ever ride down the highway! Hailed as a cross between Easy Rider and Twin Peaks, this offbeat cult favorite features a hard-hitting rock soundtrack featuring The Pogues, Exene Cervenka, Pray for Rain, The Beastie Boys and John Doe.

Roadside Prophets Specifications

This loping, easygoing road movie throws together familiar ingredients--a pair of mismatched traveling buddies, a series of encounters with unusual strangers (the "prophets" of the title), and a personal quest to quench demons from the past--for a journey that doesn't strike out into new territory but provides an amiable trip for its wandering souls. Rocker John Doe (formerly of the punk band X) is a working stiff whose journey to deliver the ashes of a friend to their final resting place in Eldorado, Nevada, becomes something of a New Age odyssey. Joined by Sam (Beastie Boy Adam Horowitz), a lost youth obsessed with the ubiquitous Motel 9s that dot every truck stop and crossroads, the two wrangle their motorcycles down desert highways like Gen-X Easy Riders, only without the drugs, the rednecks, or the '60s soundtrack (the excellent score by Pray for Rain also includes songs by Doe, former X-mate Excene Cervenka, and the Pogues). Cameos by weathered 1960s icons Timothy Leary and Arlo Guthrie join David Carradine as a guitar-playing hermit and John Cusack as an insane, food-throwing anarchist. Director Abbe Wool (who wrote Sid and Nancy) is content to watch the world ramble by from the back of a motorcycle and enjoy the company--which makes entertaining viewing if you like the personalities and an interminable trip if you don't. --Sean Axmaker

Akira Kurosawa - 4 Samurai Classics (Seven Samurai / The Hidden Fortress / Yojimbo / Sanjuro) - Criterion Collection

Akira Kurosawa - 4 Samurai Classics (Seven Samurai / The Hidden Fortress / Yojimbo / Sanjuro) - Criterion Collection Review

Kurosawa is not just considered a great japanese director - he's considered one of the best the world has known.
Samurai are a passion for me anyway - however, kurosawa brings them to life like no other.
I sometimes wish he were working today with the technology available, but it's not a degradation of what he did at all.

Details he pays attention to are easily missed the first time around and frequent watchings of these films with bring more to your eyes.

Yojimbo's first encounter with the blackgards and braggarts - the wanted men in the town, is ingenius and thrilling. Mifune plays the part so comfortably you can be lead to imagine he lived in his kimono.
His demeanor is so casual and calm that you could fear him just through his confidence.
It's something to take to heart. No real warrior needs to brag, nor does he threaten.
Right out of the Tao te ching.

Awright enough of that!

With the hidden fortress you can really see Luca's inspiration for Star Wars. And also, the female lead for every anime ever created afterward.

but my favorite is the seven samurai later to be remade as the magnificient seven in the west (what is it with the west and their inability to accept foreign films?).

the old samurai who in the opening sequence plays a monk to rescue a trapped woman gives you the personality of a man who puts all at risk for the right. And teaches a motley band of characters to do the same.

Every good fortress needs a weakness. :p

ENJOY

Akira Kurosawa - 4 Samurai Classics (Seven Samurai / The Hidden Fortress / Yojimbo / Sanjuro) - Criterion Collection Overview

Leading off the set of four Akira Kurosawa classics is Seven Samurai (1954), unanimously hailed as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of the motion picture. It was the inspiration for countless films modeled after its basic premise, but has never been surpassed in terms of sheer power of emotion, kinetic energy, and dynamic character development. The story is set in the 1600s, when the residents of a small Japanese village seek protection against repeated attacks by a band of marauding thieves and hire seven unemployed "ronin" (masterless samurai), including a boastful swordsman (Toshiro Mifune), who is actually a farmer's son desperately seeking glory and acceptance. The climactic battle remains one of the most breathtaking sequences ever filmed and one of Kurosawa's crowning cinematic achievements.

In another of the many Kurosawa-Mifune collaborations, The Hidden Fortress (1958) tells the story of a warrior and a princess trying against all odds to return to their homeland with their fortune. Along the way, they are simultaneously assisted and thwarted by two itinerant and not-too-bright farmers with their own designs on the treasure. Frequently cited for its thematic influences on Star Wars, The Hidden Fortress combines an epic tale of struggle and honor with modern comic sensibilities.

The partly comic Yojimbo (1961) was inspired by the American Western genre. Mifune plays a drifting samurai for hire who plays both ends against the middle with two warring factions, surviving on his wits and his ability to outrun his own bad luck. Yojimbo is striking for its unorthodox treatment of violence and morality, reserving judgment on the actions of its main character and instead presenting an entertaining tale with humor and much visual excitement. One of the inspirations for the spaghetti Westerns of director Sergio Leone and the 1996 Bruce Willis vehicle Last Man Standing, this film offers insight into a director who influenced American films even as he was influenced by them. The 1963 sequel, Sanjuro, is more lighthearted and less cynical, a rousing adventure with Mifune becoming an unlikely big brother to a troupe of nine naive samurai. It isn't the subtlest of Kurosawa's films, but it's one of his most entertaining.

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy Review

When she was still young and gorgeous, Jane Fonda got the starring role in Barbarella. Barbarella is the main character in this film, who's on a space mission to locate Durand-Durand, a villain who's trying to take over the world. Barbarella wears outrageously sexy outfits, travels in a wildly decorated spaceship, and meets many strange creatures along the way, that she has to do battle with.

Barbarella's sex appeal is off-the-charts, and this film is oozing with a piping-hot erotic ambiance. Interestingly though, Barbarella has sex with other characters, in a most futuristic way. She takes a pill to 'tune-in' to her partner's psyche. And no bodily contact takes place during this sort of 'sex', except hand-clasping. Apparently, orgasm is achieved when the sex partners complete an ecstatic fusion, of their minds and souls. However, Barbarella does enjoy a sexual tryst via the 'old-fashioned way', with a man she meets during her travels.

Jane Fonda was brilliantly cast as the heroic, buxom Barbarella. Her on-screen charisma, is vibrant and compelling. Milo O'Shea as the evil Durand-Durand, does a decent job in his role. So does John Phillip Law, as the pure and gentle angel, Pygar. His perfect body and square-jawed, handsome face, made him a devilishly attractive 'angel'. Anita Pallenberg played the Great Tyrant, with femme fatale relish. The lesbian sexual undertones between her and Barbarella, were absolutely sizzling.

One of the best things about this movie, is the incredible special effects and gadgetry. Long before the flashy Star Wars series premiered, Barbarella contained some amazingly creative costumes, decorations, and scenery in general. The overall tone of this film, was deeply influenced by the uninhibited adventurous spirit, of the late 60s. Especially with regards to its bold, exciting sexual themes. For those who are Jane Fonda fans, and/or are devotees of 60s SciFi films, Barbarella is a fun-filled, juicy slice of 60s camp psychedelia.

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy Overview

Barbarella makes a forced landing on the planet Lythion in the year 40,000 where she vanquishes robots and monsters.
Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: PG
Release Date: 8-AUG-2006
Media Type: DVD

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy Specifications

Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying than anything else. --Tom Keogh

Cotton Comes To Harlem

Cotton Comes To Harlem Review

I have been seeing this film since I was a kid and to be honest, with each film, I learn a little bit more about the film that I did before. Anyway, you see this fancy car followed by a gold armored truck going throughout Harlem; To me, that is suspect from the get go, but alright. Let's see how this go; The movie starts with this man coming out of this fancy car in a cape(Calvin Lockhart) with followers, and folks are on the car trying to see the Reverend O'Malley. He gets on a platform and puts on this big speech about being tired of whitey and going back to Africa and asking folk to sign up for the ship(0 minimum) and you should see the folks running up to the table to buy shares on this ship. Redd Foxx come up and has tops and after some consideration from the Reverend, he is given a certificate. Then soon after, whitey comes up and asks that the Reverend go downtown(I'm smelling a rat, but ok) then as soon as he get the people to calm down, a group of folks jump out a car and starts shooting up the place and surprise, take the money these people put down for this ship. And from then, it's a high speed chase for two cops(Godrey Cambridge and Raymond St Jacques) to get to the heart of the matter.

Cotton Comes To Harlem Overview

One of the most influential Soul Cinema pix ever to shoot onto the screen, Cotton Comes To Harlem spawned the blaxploitation boom by delivering a "refreshingly different detective action yarn with soul and humor" (Cue) and an unbeatable mix of "fast-paced adventure [and] comic lunacy" (Pacific Film Archive). Detectives "Gravedigger" Jones (Godfrey Cambridge) and "Coffin Ed" Johnson(Raymond St. Jacques) are on the case and in everyone's face when they investigate Rev. Deke O'Malley (Calvin Lockhart)a brother whose "Back To Africa" campaign is nothing more than a big scam forbigga' bucks. But when ,000 of O'Malley's laundered cash gets stashed in a bail of cotton, Gravedigger and Coffin find they're not the only dudes suddenly interested in soaring cotton prices! Trailing the bale all over Harlem, the detectives come up against the mafia, the police, black militantsand more in an all-out dash to nab the ,000 cashand to 86 anyone who stands in the way!

Cotton Comes To Harlem Specifications

Based on Chester Himes's novel, this film marked actor-writer Ossie Davis's directing debut. Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques play Himes's volatile police detectives, Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, who are on the trail of white men who pulled an armed stickup at a Back to Africa rally in Harlem. The money belongs to the poor people who paid for a chance to return to the motherland--but was it really a stickup? Or is the flashy preacher at the center of the Back to Africa movement (Calvin Lockhart) involved in a scam to rip off his own people? The plot drags; the best part of the film are the performances (as well as spotting cameos by such actors as the then-unknown Cleavon Little) and the on-location shooting in parts of New York where a camera had rarely ventured previously. Redd Foxx shows up in a small part as a ragpicker that led to his role in TV's Sanford and Son. --Marshall Fine

GTO Box Set Vol. 1

GTO Box Set Vol. 1 Review

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE gto, I'm a hardcore fan of gto and I would live on a deserted island if only I had my gto (the manga), which brings me to my point. The manga is MUCH better .. not because the animation is bad (on the contrary I think it's pretty good) but because gto is such a plot filled story that in the anime all that plot was just sucked away. The most important details that in the manga explain everything and the clues and hints given to you volume by volume, are not in the anime. Regardless of that, is SOOOOO GOODD i recomend you to go buy it NOW !!! it's hilarious, original and has deep plot (not the kind of plot that u just want to puke and die, on the contrary) very good plot, and the characters are complex(more on the manga ..much much more). With that said, if u can get your hands on the manga before you see the anime it would be awesome and you will understand what I mean. There's 25 volumes with the 24th out now. Almost over .. :'(
You just can't get enough of GTO, it's an addiction, :D

GTO Box Set Vol. 1 Overview

Volume 1: Meet Eikichi Onizuka, a 22-year-old virgin and ex-biker. He's crude, foul-mouthed, and has a hair-trigger temper. His goal: to be the greatest high school teacher in the world! Volume 2: GTO, A.K.A.: Great Teacher Onizuka, is the story of Onizuka, a former motorcycle gang member who becomes a teacher to make a difference. Using his street smarts to deal with colleagues, students and troublemakers, Onizuka finds that he too has many lessons to learn! The hippest new anime this year. Volume 3: Onizuka mentors a young female student that has been ostracized by her classmates. The bad news, not everyone thinks this student / teacher relationship is healthy. The good news is The Great Teacher Onizuka doesn’t care what other people think. Volume 4: GTO must pass a nationwide test to keep his teaching position, is sidetracked when Young Hidemi, his nemesis, is kidnapped. The popular Urumi Kanzaki appears for the first time in this volume leading GTO on adventure after adventure. GTO might have met his match. Volume 5: GTO’s love interest, Ms. Fuyutsuki, flees the Academy in an attempt to escape the simultaneous disdain and affection of the students. She finds herself in the direct path of destruction. . .literally! GTO to the rescue! The lengths he’ll go to just to get a girl!

GTO Box Set Vol. 1 Specifications

Eikichi Onizuka is the teacher in every parent's nightmares, which may be the reason so many ninth-graders adore him. Built like a brick sushi bar, the 22-year-old Onizuka is a second-degree black belt in karate, a former biker, a foul-mouthed chain-smoker, and a lecher. But he's fanatically devoted to the idea of being a teacher and cares passionately about his students. Onizuka administers a broadly comic mixture of tough love and Clint Eastwood-style vigilante justice, which is just what's needed. Every student at Holy Forest Middle School seems to be a misfit, a thug, a bully, and/or the product of an unhappy home. Onizuka's actions bring him into conflict with parents, rival teachers, the PTA, various watchdog groups, and the sniveling vice-principal, none of whom can stop him.

Tomoko is being tormented by an ex-friend, so Onizuka helps her win the local beauty pageant--while ogling her breasts. When bullied nerd Noboru attempts suicide, Onizuka saves his life, trashing the vice-principal's treasured car in the process. He breaks down the wall that divides Mizuki and her parents--figuratively and literally--and is rewarded with her panties. Each act of kindness or courage wins a few more students to his side--and infuriates his enemies. Although the animation is often crude, with distorted drawings substituting for changes of expression, GTO exerts a gross-out, slapstick appeal. It's a long way from To Sir, with Love. (Rated 16 and older: sexual humor, profanity, nudity, violence, tobacco and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

No More Mr. Nice Guy [Region 2]

No More Mr. Nice Guy [Region 2] Review

When it comes to the career of Jackie Chan as far as his films and stunts go Mr. Nice Guy won't be one of the first brought up; Chan has made a career out of amazing fight scenes and some of the most dangerous stunts ever seen on film. In my opinion Jackie Chan just might be the greatest action star of all time. Chan really raised the bar for action sequences and nobody has really ever managed to top him.

The thing about Jackie Chan even if you view some of his 80s movies like even Police Story you can clearly see the Hollywood influence and Mr. Nice Guy was clearly aimed at an American audience. This movie does have that B-grade feel, but its Chan's fighting and stunts that raise the movie above the normal B-Flick. Here in Mr. Nice Guy it seems to be a more slightly toned down Jackie Chan or just maybe it's just damn near impossible to top some of his earlier work. Regardless of which it is this isn't gonna make the Jackie Chan highlight reel, but it's still filled with some great fight scenes and some great stunts.

The screenplay by Fibe Ma & Edward Tang is what it is; look nobody really goes into a Jackie Chan movie for the script. We watch his flicks for the fights and stunts. The script by Ma & Tang is good in the sense it's never boring, but the plot is very thin and actually as the movie goes on its quite easy to even forget how this whole thing started. The characters though are mostly likeable and the villains are silly fun. The script is weak, but I suppose it serves its purpose.

Mr. Nice Guy was directed by Sammo Hung who has appeared in many of these kinds of flicks and should be best known to American audiences from the TV series Martial Law; Sammo's directing is fairly good; the movie is well paced and there really isn't a slow moment at all. The action starts off quick and its non-stop. Most of the running time is filled with action and any breaks are very brief. This isn't one of the great martial arts movies and does feel too American in structure, but Sammo Hung does a good job in the sense the movie is never boring.

The performances are decent from the cast with Chan being the best of the lot. But like we don't see these movies for the script we also don't really watch them for the acting. Jackie Chan really isn't a bad actor he's actually fairly good and while I'm a big fan of his work I would love to see him with better material from a writing stance. Miki Lee as Miki is just so cute and fun to watch and her scenes with Chan are highly entertaining.

Like I said before most of the running time of Mr. Nice Guy is packed with action and while these may not be the best of Chan's career they are still excellent and thrilling to watch. While Mr. Nice Guy isn't quite a 4-star movie and it really is very much an American B-Movie, I still rate it 4-stars for the simple fact Mr. Nice Guy is just so entertaining; from the get go until the closing shot this movie is never once boring and will keep a smile planted on the viewers face. Don't go in expecting classic Jackie Chan just sit back and enjoy the ride.

No More Mr. Nice Guy [Region 2] Overview

TV chef Jackie Chan is involuntarily involved in a gang war between stereotypical Italians and punkers right out of A Clockwork Orange. Most of the cast is in a coma, and the plot is stupid, stupid, stupid. The reason to watch this is for Chan's gravity-defying stunts as he is chased through the streets of Melbourne by Aussie thugs trying to relocate missing cocaine. Chan is so innovative with his tricks that it is a shame he doesn't work with more intelligent material. Still, his fans should enjoy this slight adventure, as Chan's carefully choreographed martial art moves are as awesome as ever. Watch for a stunt involving a horse-drawn carriage, as it almost compensates for the lackluster story line. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Vampire Effect

Vampire Effect Review

This is a fantastic slice of non-stop, high octane, martial-arts, comedy horror thriller in the vein of Van Helsing and Underworld and even the Blade movies. It's a film that entertains and doesn't take itself too seriously. And if, like me, you thought Underworld and Van Helsing were great concepts ruined by poor execution then look no further for how this kind of film should be done.

Of course the plot doesn't bear scrutiny; something about a European vampire killing off vampire royalty to collect their blood in order to open an ancient and sacred book that grants a vampire daylight immortality (!) Nice. And continuity's dubious; at the start of the film our hero and his sidekick have trouble fighting off 10 vampires by the end vamps are being despatched in the dozens and our two heroines (KPop stars and both excellent to boot (Imagine Atomic Kitten doing Ultraviolet. It just wouldn't work!)) have strength and endurance beyond their perfectly formed but still small and dainty frames.

But none of this detracts from the overall experience. The fight scenes are fast and furious and, yes, over-the-top, with some superb CGI/wire work interplay. The comedy includes direct parodies of more famous films along with plenty of inter-character rivalries. The first meeting and subsequent fight between the two female leads is hilarious. The actors themselves also appear to be having a ball and their enthusiasm's infectious. So long as you've checked your brain out at the start you'll be hollering along in joy. The vampires are also wonderfully characterised. The Royal Prince living in his hi-tech coffin refusing to lower himself to actually sucking blood: He'll have his decanted by a servant, thank-you-very-much! And the way they move is captured perfectly; exactly how I envisioned Count Dracula in Stoker's novel: like a malevolent Spiderman!

It's also worth noting that Charlene Choi is some of the prettiest Asian eye candy around :o)

And it's got Jackie Chan in it.

So in conclusion, it's a must. I can't think of a better way to waste an hour and a half and I'm pretty sure this film will be taking several more hours off my life. Not that I mind in the slightest. It's so enjoyable I've even ordered its two sequels, sight unseen!
