The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is the film all Harry Potter fans have waited 10 years to see, and the good news is that it's worth the hype--visually stunning, action packed, faithful to the book, and mature not just in its themes and emotion but in the acting by its cast, some of whom had spent half their lives making Harry Potter movies. Part 2 cuts right to the chase: Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) has stolen the Elder Wand, one of the three objects required to give someone power over death (a.k.a. the Deathly Hallows), with the intent to hunt and kill Harry. Meanwhile, Harry's quest to destroy the rest of the Horcruxes (each containing a bit of Voldemort's soul) leads him first to a thrilling (and hilarious--love that Polyjuice Potion!) trip to Gringotts Bank, then back to Hogwarts, where a spectacular battle pitting the young students and professors (a showcase of the British thesps who have stolen every scene of the series: Maggie Smith's McGonagall, Jim Broadbent's Slughorn, David Thewlis's Lupin) against a dark army of Dementors, ogres, and Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter, with far less crazy eyes to make this round). As predicted all throughout the saga, Harry also has his final showdown with Voldemort--neither can live while the other survives--though the physics of that predicament might need a set of crib notes to explain. But while each installment has become progressively grimmer, this finale is the most balanced between light and dark (the dark is quite dark--several familiar characters die, with one significant death particularly grisly); the humor is sprinkled in at the most welcome times, thanks to the deft adaptation by Steve Kloves (who scribed all but one of the films from J.K. Rowling's books) and direction by four-time Potter director David Yates. The climactic kiss between Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), capping off a decade of romantic tension, is perfectly tuned to their idiosyncratic relationship, and Daniel Radcliffe has, over the last decade, certainly proven he was the right kid for the job all along. As Prof. Snape, the most perfect of casting choices in the best-cast franchise of all time, Alan Rickman breaks your heart. Only the epilogue (and the lack of chemistry between Harry and love Ginny Weasley, barely present here) stand a little shaky, but no matter: the most lucrative franchise in movie history to date has just reached its conclusion, and it's done so without losing its soul. --Ellen A. The former is a lively version of Kenneth Grahame's book of animal adventures, including Mr. Toad, a rambunctious sort with a passion for motorcars. Basil Rathbone narrates the story. Sleepy Hollow is the Washington Irving story of a stuffy schoolmaster and his ability to win the love of the fair Katrina from the brutish Brom Van Brunt. Many fans will see a resemblance to Disney's masterpiece created some 40 years later, Beauty and the Beast, in style and story. The end is still scary enough to send youngsters under the table. Bing Crosby supplies the narration, character voices, and songs. The opening number in a library including two stories has been included in this good-looking restoration. Beasts of the Southern Wild tells its story entirely from the 6-year-old girl's perspective; the actions and emotions of adults take on a mythic scope, as does the damaged environment in which she lives. The movie is dense and rich, often as obscure and murky as the overgrown bayou itself, sometimes off-putting and enticing at the same time. Wallis, her performance brimming with feral energy and a wounded soul, carries the movie with more star power than most adults could muster. The dialogue is thick with intriguing metaphors and the images resist being easily interpreted into a conventional plot, but the story gradually emerges, rising to a potent end. As the advances in CGI special effects have continued to keep action-movie audiences roaring for bigger and better displays of digital bombast, a trend in Hollywood comedies has upped the ante in a parallel way. Raunchy, risqué, and just plain filthy humor is standard fare for audiences who like their vulgar laughs as much as their superheroic explosions. The two worlds collide in The Watch, a dirty shoot-'em-up whose comic core counters the extreme sci-fi story of an alien race that can't take a joke. Fortunately, the decidedly non-superhuman heroes battle it out with equal parts punches and punch lines. The first-rate cast is headed by Ben Stiller, who has plenty of experience with filthy humor and big-budget action. He also has the movie-star charisma to bring high concept down to the toilet or the gutter, whichever happens to be funnier. Stiller plays Evan, the upstanding, uptight manager of an Ohio Costco who starts to really care about crime after one of his security guards is brutally murdered. The police can't really be bothered (Will Forte is excellent as a pompous local lawman), so Evan starts a neighborhood watch as a way to take back the night. Unfortunately his recruits turn out to be a less than vigilant vigilante group, with Vince Vaughn as a brawny motor mouth obsessed with protecting his teen daughter, Jonah Hill as an off-kilter arms expert who was rejected by the police academy (for good reason), and the indeterminately ethnic Richard Ayoade (excellent, as he was in the British sitcom The IT Crowd), who's focused only on the kind of action that involves sex and females. The quartet's individual issues are played at maximum laugh-per-minute volume and remain part of the story even after the team realizes their crime problem isn't from the inner city, it's from outer space. Turns out a hive of aliens have commandeered Evan's Costco as a base of operations to dominate humanity. After all, what better place to stage an Earth takeover than a place that has everything? (Costco should get a big-box good sport award for signing off on such wall-to-wall product placement.) The script by Jared Stern, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg (the latter two's brilliant writing career also includes Superbad and The Pineapple Express) is chock-a-block with jokes that touch the penis in nearly every way imaginable. Think masturbation, think Magnum condoms, think vibrant or fruitless bodily fluids and you'll be thinking like the obsessive lugs in The Watch. And it's not just human penises that are made the butt of most of the jokes. In one of many playful plot contrivances, the aliens' genitals become cause for out-of-this-world vulgarity. Apparently Hollywood man-children aren't the only beings in the universe who don't think with their heads. These aliens have a very peculiar Achilles' heel. Here's a hint: it's also nowhere near their feet. And even though this soft spot is their brain, it's not inside their skull. The phallic jokes never let up, but at least most of them are funny. The Watch tries so hard for nonstop laughs that it can't help but yield a high rate of success, especially when the material is worked by such an estimable ensemble of comedy pros. It's clear that director Akiva Schaffer fostered a strong improv vibe on the set (his background is directing shorts on SNL). He's best at capturing a spontaneous sketch-comedy tone that drives the constant one-upsmanship between the filthy, shocking shenanigans of the four leads. They get ample help from the supporting cast. In addition to Will Forte as the disinterested cop, Rosemary DeWitt is terrific as Evan's demanding wife. And in an extended, uncredited cameo Billy Crudup plays the weirdest, most enigmatic creepy-insinuation-guy ever. Talk about hiding a dirty secret! There's an overall hit-or-miss quality of comedy and action in The Watch, though there are plenty more tick marks in the hit column. It's all bad-mannered good fun with the badge of a hard-R rating worn as proudly as a giant splooge of green alien slime. --Ted Fry

That's Edgar Allan Poe himself, staggering around a tavern and challenging patrons to finish a simple line of doggerel they really ought to recognize: "'Quoth the Raven…' Anyone?" The only person croaking out a "Nevermore" is a Frenchman, wouldn't you know it. Such are the humiliations for poor Poe (played by John Cusack) in The Raven, an attempt to recast the tortured author as an investigator in a fiendish series of murders drawn from his own writings. He's enlisted by a Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to assist in the sleuthing, even though Poe would rather be drinking or wooing a fair maiden (Alice Eve), or probably both. (He doesn't seem to have a lot of time for writing.) This Sherlock Holmes-ian concoction might have worked if director James McTeigue had found a way to maintain interest in the actual storyline, but the movie's weirdly dull--even with a damsel in distress for the second half of the action, the characters are colorless and the direction mechanical. Cusack gives it his all, wrapping a sneer around a handful of one-liners that George Sanders might've enjoyed, but the gore and the quips sit uneasily together, in a desperate hunt for a proper tone. And while this kind of vehicle isn't expected to provide documentary reality, it must be said that the movie never convinces us this person is remotely close to the actual writer called Edgar A. Poe. The Raven couldn't handle that level of perversity. --Robert Horton

Since there are no real trees in Thneedville, Ted acts on the crazy stories of his grandmother (Betty White), venturing beyond the city's walls into the desolate wasteland to locate a mysterious creature called the Once-ler (Ed Helms). Here the story and animation begin to more closely follow the book. Ted discovers the grumpy recluse, who reluctantly begins to tell him a tale about a once-perfect landscape filled with beautiful Truffula Trees and cute frolicking animals--a landscape now decimated by one greedy young man's insatiable appetite for profit. The beauty and wonder of the Truffula forest and its creatures are right out of Dr. Seuss's illustrations. While the forest creatures may not be directly referred to as Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swomee-Swans, and Humming-Fish, the cute little bears, funny-looking ducks, and especially charming trio of singing fish are instantly recognizable. They serve, as they do in Dr. Seuss's book, to add just the right amount of humor and levity to what would otherwise be a pretty heavy-handed message from the Lorax (Danny DeVito) about environmental preservation. Ted's hormonal instincts to impress Audrey slowly begin to take a back seat to the plight of the lost trees and animals, and the Once-ler's assertion that "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better" rings true by the end of the film. The abundance of original music is a nice and unexpected addition to the story, though why neither Efron nor Swift actually gets to sing is perplexing. (Ages 5 and older) Tami Horiuchi
