The Pagemaster

The Pagemaster Review

Nine-year-old Richard Tyler (Macaulay Culkin) is, not to put too fine a point on it, a coward. He's afraid of secondhand smoke, electric shock, natural disaster, and the possibility of any accident no matter how small. His bicycle is equipped with big headlights, a windshield, a beeper, and a visibility pennant, and when he ventures out on it he wears a long-sleeved jacket, helmet, goggles, and reflective vest. He won't play Little League for fear of being beaned on the head by a ball, and he won't go up into the treehouse his father (Ed Begley, Jr.) is building for him because "seven per cent of all household accidents involve ladders." Surprisingly for a kid who's memorized every statistic related to injuries and danger, he doesn't have a library card, and when a thunderstorm drives him into the local library for shelter, he's amazed by its possibilities and by the mural on the central dome. A bump on the head sends him into a universe of "illustrations" where he meets the Pagemaster (Christopher Lloyd, who also plays Mr. Dewey, the librarian) and is sent on a quest through the land of books to overcome evil, find his own courage, and face his fears, with the help of a trio of animated volumes, bluff piratical Adventure (Patrick Stewart), jive-talking Fantasy (Whoopi Goldberg), and Horror (Frank Walker), who looks like a cross between Igor and the Frankenstein Monster and, like Richard, is afraid of just about everything. With references to such classic books as Treasure Island (Puffin Classics), The Hound of the Baskervilles: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Unabridged Classics), The Arabian Nights (Illustrated Junior Library), Moby Dick (Oxford World's Classics), and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: And Other Tales of Terror (Penguin Classics), a powerful James Horner soundtrack The Pagemaster, and animation that sometimes approaches the quality of Disney (Richard's "third trial," a fire-breathing dragon, is particularly impressive), this is a good DVD to watch with young book-lovers and reluctant readers alike--as one critical review says, "How can you find fault with a movie that encourages kids to pick up a book?"

The Pagemaster Overview

Seeking refuge from a storm, timid Richard Tyler enters an empty library only to be swept away into the magical animated world of the Pagemaster. It's a timeless place of wonder and discovery where legendary characters from literary classics come alive. Richard meets the infamous "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide" and comes face to face with the mighty "Moby Dick," the treacherous pirates on "Treasure Island" an a giant fire - breathing dragon, Guided by a trio of talking books - Adventure, Fantasy and horror - Richard must conquer his greatest fears before he can find his way home.

The Pagemaster Specifications

A blend of live-action and animation, this film centers on a fearful young boy (Macaulay Culkin) afraid to experience life because he's calculated the odds of an accident for every known activity. Chased by bullies, he winds up at the local library, where a bump on the head sends him into an animated universe, where his best friends are walking, talking books voiced by, among others, Patrick Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg. The Pagemaster (Christopher Lloyd) points the way to the exit, but the boy must first traverse the adventures of literary history, encountering everyone from Dr. Jekyll to Captain Ahab to Long John Silver. The animation is middling, but a worthy message makes this better children's entertainment than you'd expect. How can you fault a movie that encourages kids to pick up a book? --Marshall Fine

South Sea Woman

South Sea Woman Review

What can I say. This is a thoroughly splendid piece of World War 2 Hollywood blarney. It is pure escapist entertainment released for the family audience of post World War Two America. "What did you do in the war Daddy?" was a question often asked in those days following the war and a lot of kids whose fathers were Marines in WW 2 must have wondered if thats what it was like too.

As history or serious fiction it is bilge. The trial is all about protecting of a friend. Burt is like "The Crimson Pirate!" in a Marine Sergent's Uniform trying to save the brash and dopey Chuck Connors from a fate worse than death i.e. Virginia Mayo, the Bar Singer he met with the heart of gold. Add a supporting cast of Warner Brother castaway character actors and there you have it, an Irish stew of a movie!

The ending is action packed and injects some meaningful pathos befitting the time and setting. The improvised, nearly suicidal mission against the Japanese in a boat full of colorful characters is an act of personal redemption, patriotism, heroism, and sacrifice all wrapped into one, and all men, Veterans or not, had to love looking at Virginia Mayo and laughing at the stupid love story. It's all fantasy of course but it does not insult or hurt anyone.

You should see this once anyhow. It is certainly great escapist entertainment in the Hollywood tradition. It was no miss TV when I was a kid.

South Sea Woman Overview

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 10/23/2007 Run time: 98 minutes

South Sea Woman Specifications

Burt Lancaster made this picture the same year as the great From Here to Eternity, but other than sharing a military backdrop, that's about where the similarities end. South Sea Woman does have Lancaster in his prime, as a swaggering Marine undergoing a mysterious court-martial after World War II. The nature of his alleged offenses won't become clear until we hear all the testimony, which the movie provides in a series of flashbacks. The story's a goof: how Burt and Marine buddy Chuck Connors end up on an island with gin-slinging dame Virginia Mayo, doing battle with the Vichy French, the Japanese, and each other. There's also a cross-dressing scene, a highly questionable native dance, and assorted slapstick. Journeyman director Arthur Lubin (guiding light of the Francis movies--the talking mule, not Ford Coppola) manages to work up some brawny action in the big climax, and the movie unexpectedly goes for a bit of grandness around Connors' character. Connors, the future star of The Rifleman TV show, was still new to the acting game at this point, having been discovered as a baseball player a year or so earlier. Tall, lean and toothy, he easily holds his own with Lancaster--but then, nobody has to work too hard in these minor, mildly entertaining circumstances. --Robert Horton

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition) [Blu-ray]

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

This movie was simply hilarious. It is definitely not for everyone's humor, but if you like cheesy horror films with corney catch phrases, you might love this movie. Bruce Cambell is hilarious in this film. He says things that are so corney, it manages to be hilarious. The costume artists did a great job... and it's also fairly entertaining when it comes to battle scenes and such. Personally, I loved this movie... I'd reccomend it for any cheesy horror film lovers out there... or for anyone who loves Bruce Cambell and somehow hasn't seen it.

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

All primitive screwheads, listen up! Cult superstar Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) reunites with director Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell, Spider-Man) to battle the deadly forces of evil in Army of Darkness - the outrageous, effects-fueled action epic that will make you scream with fear and laughter. Forced to lead a makeshift Dark Ages army against the demonic Deadites, who possess all the deadly magic of hell, the shotgun-toting, chainsaw-armed, reluctant 20th century time traveler Ash (Campbell) must save the living from the dead, rescue his medieval girlfriend and get back to his own time. One of the most popular horror comedies of all time, now digitally remastered and loaded with bonus features, Army of Darkness Screwhead Edition is drop-dead fun!

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

A movie that only true horror buffs could love, Army of Darkness is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic Jason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes Army of Darkness nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon

The Sidney Poitier DVD Collection (For Love of Ivy / In the Heat of the Night / Lilies of the Field / The Organization / They Call Me Mister Tibbs!)

The Sidney Poitier DVD Collection (For Love of Ivy / In the Heat of the Night / Lilies of the Field / The Organization / They Call Me Mister Tibbs!) Review

If nothing else, this DVD set gives us two absolute classics in IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and LILIES OF THE FIELD. But since this is Sidney Poitier we're talking about, the three other films collected here are also watchable enough, if not as remarkable or seminal. Sidney Poitier is a great actor, and like all great actors, the man exudes a powerful, magnetic presence. When he's on the screen, your eyes are simply drawn to him and his actions and his words.

Besides his iconic role of Virgil Tibbs, Poitier shifts gears to play, in LILIES OF THE FIELD (1963), a traveling handyman who gets gently badgered by nuns into constructing a chapel and, in FOR LOVE OF IVY, a big city hustler who sets out to seduce a housemaid only to fall in love with her.

"They call me... MISTER Tibbs!" I guess if I can pick only one Sidney Poitier film to watch, the provocative IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT would be it. Racial tensions play out in the southern town of Sparta, Mississippi as black Philly homicide detective Virgil Tibbs, merely passing thru, is accused of murder and clashes with the bigoted local sheriff (a dynamite Rod Steiger). Taut and atmospheric, seething with dangerous undercurrents, and featuring an outstanding mood-evocative score, a gripping mystery, and crackling performances, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT is simply, simply not to be missed. On the screen, you could cut the tension between Steiger and Poitier with a knife. Rod Steiger won the Oscar for Best Actor for 1967, but Sidney Poitier was arguably equally deserving.

But Poitier had garnered his own Best Actor Oscar a few years earlier in 1963's LILIES OF THE FIELD. This is a gentle movie, along the lines of COME TO THE STABLE and THE BELLS OF ST. MARY'S, and, to be honest, this was a lightweight role for Poitier. LILIES OF THE FIELD comes out of left field, a quirky, sentimental little gem chronicling the amicable war of will between Poitier's cheerful traveling handyman Homer Smith and Lilia Skala's austere Mother Superior Maria who wants Smith to build her and her fellow German nuns a chapel. Poitier is terrific again, but it's Skala's stern performance which injects a welcome note of edginess to this otherwise good-natured heapful of character study and culture clash. Homer Smith's leading the nuns in the "Amen" song is still very much the highlight of the film.

Just because you lift a memorable quote from IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and make it into a movie title doesn't automatically translate to a memorable sequel. Poitier reprises his role of Detective Tibbs in 1970's THEY CALL ME MISTER TIBBS!, and it's an inferior follow-up. I guess Detective Tibbs had moved on from Philadelphia, because he's now solving crimes in San Francisco. His current case involves the murder of an upscale prostitute, and we also get to see Virgil at home with his wife and kids. It's all a very bland, very routine police procedural when compared to the racial mine field navigated by Virgil during his first screen outing. THEY CALL ME MISTER TIBBS! is about as socially relevant as Q-tips and there's that unsatisfying resolution and you're left with this empty feeling and that Rod Steiger-shaped hole. Sidney Poitier manages to keep your eyes glued on him, but this is my least favorite film in this collection.

FOR LOVE OF IVY came out in 1968 and was a change of pace for Poitier from his edgier roles, although there's still that dab of social commentary in this romantic dramedy. After nine years of housekeeping for the genial Austin household, Ivy (Abbey Lincoln) seeks a better lot in life and gives her notice of resignation. The Austins panic at the thought of losing Ivy, and the Austin siblings (a young, hippied-out Beau Bridges and the very fine Nan Martin) hatch a plan to retain Ivy by blackmailing handsome trucking executive Jack Parks into dating her. Except that Parks (Poitier) has got his own underhanded angle going on.

Poitier wrote the story and so this must have had a special place in his heart. But FOR LOVE OF IVY doesn't showcase his best stuff. There are dead spots and the hippie/mod stuff comes across as dated. Still, Beau Bridges steals plenty of scenes, and I remember cracking up when he remarks to Poitier in the restaurant: "And besides you're kind of a shady character." - and then he asks Poitier to leave a tip.

One last time for Virgil Tibbs as THE ORGANIZATION rolls around. And, just like its immediate predecessor, this one is a pale follow-up to the original. This time out, Lieutenant Tibbs gets mixed up with a well-meaning bunch of vigilantes that made off with a cache of heroin, this to expose a powerful drug-trafficking cartel. This is a decent police thriller, kicked off by a daring nighttime heist in the opening 13 minutes, and I liked it better than THEY CALL ME MISTER TIBBS! But, as with that first sequel, this one fails to live up to IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT. Still Poitier's steady presence thumbs up this movie for me. And for Raul Julia fans, that cat is here but without his signature mustache.

Showdown in Little Tokyo

Showdown in Little Tokyo Review

Macho B-movie madness at its sublime best, this crazy action quickie is about as brain dead as you can get: wooden acting, a terrible story and a script that truly sucks. But with all the mindless violence who really cares. Gun battles, martial arts, Samurai sword slashing and gory deaths are the order of the day, not to mention plenty of beautiful ladies treated like playthings and shedding clothes at every opportunity. Despite the women and guns, there is some kind of story: Kenner (Lundgren) is on a mission of vengeance. His parents were killed when he was little by crazy Yakuza thug Yoshida (Tagawa), an ice-cool super-villain now specializing in drug dealing and generally looking mean. Kenner, adept in the Samurai ways, grows to be a law-abiding copper who's now right on his tail. Male bonding ensues when policeman Johnny Murata (Lee, in his US debut), a hip-talking dude with street credentials, is assigned as Kenner's partner in crime, and all hell simply breaks loose. You could say that there's an artistic angle to all this fighting, shooting and banging, but then that would be a lie - Showdown in Little Tokyo is a classic in a completely different sense of the word.

Showdown in Little Tokyo Overview

A raised-in-japan supercop kicks into high gear when the mobsters who killed his parents make a play for power. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 02/03/2004 Starring: Dolph Lundgren Brandon Lee Run time: 78 minutes Rating: R Director: Mark L. Lester

Showdown in Little Tokyo Specifications

Showdown in Little Tokyo is a 1991 martial arts action-comedy that, in pitting Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee as L.A. cops against Japanese drug dealers, plays like a B-movie Tango and Cash or Lethal Weapon 2 (both released just two years before). Between career highs in Rocky IV (1985) and Universal Soldier (1992), Lundgren looked as if he might make it big at the box office, and clearly wanting to be the new Schwarzenegger he is here directed by Mark L Lester, who had earlier helmed Ah-nold's Commando (1985). In the event both actor and director headed for straight-to-video territory, while Lee (Bruce's son) went on to The Crow. The 75-minute running time suggests the studio lost confidence and seriously cut the movie though, as the space between the action is filled with nothing but cringe-inducing dialogue, thriller clichés, and Lundgren "romancing" Tia Carrere, it still makes sense. Basing its title on John Carpenter's 1986 fantasy-comedy Big Trouble in Little China and anticipating Rush Hour (1998), Showdown in Little Tokyo alternates between crude tongue-in-cheek moments and action so ludicrous it's unintentionally hilarious . A camp disaster that simply defies belief, this is so-bad-it's-good entertainment. --Gary S. Dalkin

Trinity Twin Pack (They Call Me Trinity / Trinity is Still My Name)

Trinity Twin Pack (They Call Me Trinity / Trinity is Still My Name) Review

These movies are by far 2 of the best and funniest comedy westerns ever made. The plot is simple and easy to follow, and everything that happens occurs at a leisurely pace. There is plenty of action to keep the movies moving and loads of laughs for those that aren't looking for anything serious.

Trinity Twin Pack (They Call Me Trinity / Trinity is Still My Name) Overview

Hen's Tooth Video proudly presents two of the most successful Spaghetti Westerns ever made in a boxed set edition. Terence Hill (Mario Girotti) and Bud Spencer (Carlo Pedersoli) star in these wildly popular spoofs of the Italian Western genre. THEY CALL ME TRINITY and TRINITY IS STILL MY NAME are presented here for the first time in their theatrically correct anamorphic widescreen ratios, mastered from magnificent Technicolor prints. These comedies paved the way for Mel Brooks' Western send-up Blazing Saddles and made international superstars out of the team of Hill and Spencer, ushering in a twenty-five year association for the two actors. Together and separately they worked with some of the best Italian directors in the business (Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci, and Luchino Visconti). The Trinities were followed by hits like Crimebusters, Miami Supercops, Odds and Evens and countless others. Sit back and enjoy a double dose of Western comedy, Italian style!

Mad Mission, Part 2: Aces Go Places

Mad Mission, Part 2: Aces Go Places Review

I have been trying to get a copy of this movie for at least 15 years now and the fact that it is now coming out on DVD is why I love this format . The movie is a funny spoof of spy movies with amazing action and truly one of a kind gadgets . The series also has a famous villian in every installment , in this one it is the clint eastwood character from the good ,the bad ,the ugly (or at least a lookalike) . This movie is for kids and adults alike and especially for fans of spys and gadgets . I won't be buying it but only because I am buying the whole collection .

Mad Mission, Part 2: Aces Go Places Overview

The popular series was already beginning to turn smug and self-indulgent by 1983, when the first sequel was released. The visually inventive action comedy of the bracing original (which for some reason is not currently available on video) was replaced with a lot of mugging slapstick, as affianced cops Baldy (Karl Mak) and Inspector Ho (the glorious Sylvia Chang) are repeatedly waylaid by criminal activity on their way to the altar. Meanwhile, master thief King Kong (played by pop star Sam Hui, brother of Michael) has been framed for a series of robberies, and a Caucasian hit man named Filthy Harry keeps trying to bump everybody off. It's not what you'd call a tightly plotted picture, but director Eric Tsang designs sequences that are thrilling on a purely graphic level--like the squads of identical motorbikes and Jaguars that execute choreographed pirouettes during the chase sequences. Beanpole genius movie director Tsui Hark (Once Upon a Time in China) has a brief supporting role. --David Chute

One Piece: Season Two, Sixth Voyage

One Piece: Season Two, Sixth Voyage Review

"ONE PIECE" is a popular anime series based on the popular manga series serialized in Shonen Jump by Eiichiro Oda. Suffice to say, "ONE PIECE" is the highest selling manga for Weekly Shonen Jump and its popularity has extended to various anime (via the TV series, OVA and films) and video games in America and also worldwide. The series is so popular, the episode count currently in Japan is over 400 episodes and despite receiving a heavily edited version in North America via 4Kids Entertainment earlier on, FUNimation Entertainment began releasing the original, uncut versions since the May of 2008 with a total of 13 episodes per volume.

"ONE PIECE" is an adventure anime about a 17-year-old boy named Monkey D. Luffy who gained enormous strength (and stretching abilities) after eating a magical demon fruit. He eventually teams up with a group of pirates and have the name "The Straw Hats". Luffy's driven to one day obtain the most sought out treasure known as "One Piece" and eventually become the King of the Pirates.

In "One Piece - Season Two: Sixth Voyage", the group are in the country of Alibasta as each member of the Straw Hat Pirates takes on a member of Crocodile's group while Luffy goes against Mr. Crocodile, Zoro vs. Mr. One and Nami vs. Miss Doublefinger. Meanwhile, Smoker's second-in-command leads the marines to capture Crocodile and Baroque works and also the Straw Hat Pirates.

The "ONE PIECE - Season Two: Sixth Voyage" comes with episodes 117-130 on two DVD discs (note: In Japan, this volume is actually the conclusion of season 4). Here are the spoiler-less summaries of each episode:

DISC 1:

* EPISODE 117 - Nai's Cyclone Advisory! Clima Tart Burst - Vivi uses her new weapon in battle and takes on Miss Doublefinger.
* EPISODE 118 - Secret Passed Down In the Royal Family! The Ancient Weapon Pluton! - Crocodile intends to use the ancient weapon of Pluto to destroy the city.
* EPISODE 119 - The Secret of Powerful Swordplay! Ability to Cut Steel and the Rhythm Things Have! - Zoro vs. Mr. One.
* EPISODE 120 - The Battle is Over! Koza Raises the White Flag! - Koza raises the white flag in order to end the war but Baroque Works have something else in mind.
* EPISODE 121 - Where Vivi's Voice Gets Heart! The Hero Descends! - With a war in Alabasta, the Straw Pirates try to help Vivi get to the center of the city.
* EPISODE 122 - Sand Croc and Water Luffy! - Luffy takes on Crocodile in their second duel!
* EPISODE 123 - That Looks Croc-ish! Luffy, Run to the Royal Tomb! - The battle between Luffy and Crocodile goes underground.

DISC 2:

* EPISODE 124 - The Nightmare Draws Near! This is the Sand-Sand Clan's Secret Base! - The continuation of Luffy vs. Crocodile!
* EPISODE 125 - Magnificent! Wings! My Name is Pell, Guardian Deity of the Country! - Vivi and the Straw Hats work hard to stop a bomb from destroying the city and they receive unexpected help from Vivi's guardian.
* EPISODE 126 - I Will Surpass You! Rain Falls in Alabasta! - As Vivi tries to stop her countrymen from killing each other, the rains fall on Alabasta.
* EPISODE 127 - A Farewell to Arms! Pirates and Different Ideas of Justice - The aftermath of Alabasta and how Tashigi, Smoker and the Marines must deal with what has happened in Alabasta.
* EPISODE 128 - The Pirates' Banquet and Operation Escape from Alabasta! - After the Straw Hat Pirates recuperate, it's time to eat and celebrate and leave Alabasta before the marines catch up with them.
* EPISODE 129 - It All Started On that Day! Vivia Tells the Story of Her Adventure! - Vivi must make a decision...to stay in Alabasta as princess or to fight among the Straw Hat pirates.
* EPISODE 130 - Scent of Danger! The Seventh Member is Nico Robin - Nico Robin chooses to join the Straw Hat Pirates.

VIDEO :

For most television series, because they are created nearly before they are aired on television, unlike film and OVA's, there typically is not much detail involved in a Japanese animated television series. "ONE PIECE" is probably one of those rare exceptions in that it has really cool character designs and very detailed artistic backgrounds. Of course, since it is on DVD, you will see some artifacting and edge enhancement but it's not so noticeable unless you are really looking for it.

The anime series is presented in standard 4:3 definition but for a television series, "ONE PIECE" sports cool and unique character designs and beautifully painted artistic backgrounds. Definitely one of the better looking anime series that has remained consistent and has not downgraded since it first aired on television. Character designer Kazuya Hisada (who worked on the "Dragon Ball" and "Dragon Ball GT" series) and Noboru Koizumi (who worked on "Giant Robo", "Dragon Ball GT" and "Tenchi Universe") have been very good of capturing "One Piece" creator Eiichiro Oda's unique style.

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

As for the audio, the series is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound, English Stereo and Japanese Stereo. Of course, the English 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound is the better audio choice to listen to, although one who has a receiver that can set their audio to all channels can definitely enjoy the Japanese stereo track as well. But both audio tracks are done very well and I have to admit that "ONE PIECE" has one of the most solid English dub tracks for an anime TV series. Very well done on both audio tracks but again, have been very impressed by the voice talent for the series thus far.

Subtitles are in English.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

"ONE PIECE - Season Two: Sixth Voyage" comes with the following special features:

DISC 1:

* Audio commentary for EPISODE 119 - The Secret of Powerful Swordplay! Ability to Cut Steel and the Rhythm Things Have! - Director Scott Sager joins voice talents Christopher Sabat (Zoro) and (Brett Weaver) Mr. One.

DISC 2:

* Textless Songs - Textless Songs for the opening and ending theme.
* Trailers - FUNimation Entertainment trailers

JUDGMENT CALL:

I absolutely love "ONE PIECE". The characters, the action, the involving and well-written storylines and of course, the wonderful voice work via Japanese and also the English dub tracks and the refreshing and unique artwork. But what I enjoyed the most about "One Piece - Season Two: Sixth Voyage" is that it has literally been a long stretch between the introduction of Vivi, the trip to Alabasta and now this volume finally gets to the final battle between Luffy and Crocodile, while Nami takes on Miss Doublefinger and Zoro takes on Mr. One, and also the Straw Hats have a new member of the group.

Although nearly every volume has its share of action, this time around the opponents are deadlier than ever before. Before it was a team taking on various opponents but now we have one-on-one battles especially an exciting first battle between Luffy and Crocodile. With the events that are featured in "One Piece - Season Two: Sixth Voyage", for those who have seen the movie "ONE PIECE MOVIE 8: THE DESERT PRINCESS AND THE PIRATES - Adventures in Alabasta" will be familiar between two of the battles that take place in this volume. But of course, the television series features more of the actual battle.

So, for those who have kept up with the adventure to Alabasta will be happy with this volume as the war in Alabasta and the battle between Crocodile and his henchman versus the Straw Hat Pirates reaches its final conclusion. No doubt that Luffy, Nami and Zoro fans will dig this latest volume. Actually, with all the action that takes place in this volume, any "One Piece" fan will dig this latest volume!

Ninja Academy

Ninja Academy Review

Police Academy with Ninjas. And we all know that ninjas instantly make any film better of course.

Seriously this film has got a fantastic cast of characters, from a mime to a 007 ripoff (007-11), a war obsessed maniac and a clutz whose job is enough to make anyone fear for their safety. It's rounded off by a typical late 80s-fashion girl & her timid friend and the heroic cocky rich kid whose efforts at pulling the sensei's seriously hot daughter aka their instructor are so valiant you can't help but root for the loser.

It's got some great visual gags, a mime doing ninja training is genius that has to be seen to be believed and 00711 is fantastic.

Ninja Academy Overview

Saddled with a bunch of misfits, a tough sensei with a heart of gold must turn geeks into warriors while an old rivalry begins to heat back up, pitting White Ninjas against Black Ninjas for a crash course in life and death. Lots of adolescent laughs and a colorful cast of characters populate this martial arts spoof which spreads from Beverly Hills to Topanga Canyon, always in the company of hot babes.

D. Grayman: Season One, Part One [Blu-ray]

D. Grayman: Season One, Part One [Blu-ray] Review

In 2004, mangaka Katsura Hoshino's "D. Gray-Man" was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine with 19 manga collected manga volumes currently released.

With the manga series popularity, in 2006, "D. Gray-Man" received its anime adaptation and in three years, a total of 103 episodes were featured in Japan on TV Tokyo and also received various video game series, soundtracks and also novels.

FUNimation Entertainment began releasing the series in the US via 13-episode volumes on DVD (with the most recent release being the season two part two) and now the first 13 episodes (season one part one) is being released on Blu-ray.

"D. Gray-Man" focuses on the 15-year-old character, Allen Walker, who is an exorcist who works for the Black Order, an organization that is trying to stop the main antagonist Millennium Earl. Earl wants to destroy humanity by creating an army of akuma. What Earl does is go to those who grieve for a love one that passed away and asks them if they want to see their love one alive and if they do, they just have to call out the deceased one's name.

In this case, Earl brings up this metal skeleton in which the soul of the dead comes alive and takes over the metal skeleton that are now akuma. Earl then urges for these akuma to kill the person that wished them back and take over their body in order to inflict more harm on humanity.

It is the job of the exorcists to stop these akuma and kill them but for Allen, unlike others who work for the Black Order, he understands their anguish of being revived to kill and having no control over what they do. Allen knows this from experience as he was tricked by Earl when he was young and ended up bringing his dead father Mana back to life as an akuma. And Mana cursing Allen with an eye that can detect and see the anguish of the soul that inhabits an akuma body.

Along with others in the Black Order, Allen learns through his visits to various villages of the evil of Millennium Earl but also that he has others working for him. And a race is on for both sides to look for 109 pieces of the "Innocence" which can be turned into anti-akuma weapons that the exorcist need to fight Earl and his akuma, while Earl wants these pieces to make sure that he can destroy them.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

"D. Gray-Man: Season One Part One" is featured in 1080p High Definition (16×9). Overall, picture quality varies from episode-to-episode. The animation and character designs are well-done. I actually like how the characters are animated and although not a vibrant anime series (since a lot of the scenes take place indoors or during the night time, especially with a foggy atmosphere), there are colors that come out from the various visual effects from the red that comes off of Allen's eye to the green light aura around his arm, the blue of Yu's innocence sword or the orange and red from explosions and fire.

Part of the problem that I found is that the discoloration problems that were evident on "Samurai Champloo", "Basilisk" and several recent Blu-ray releases shows up. During closeups of a face, you can see these green splotchiness surrounding the faces of the characters. But it is important to note that the splotchiness and artifacting is not as evident as the two series mentioned but it does show up from time-t0-time. But because of this, I'm guessing that for this Blu-ray release, the video is an upconvert.

As for the audio, "D. Gray-Man: Season One Part One" is featured in Dolby TrueHD English 5.1. Dialogue is clear as it comes from the center channel, music and special effects from the front channels. During the more intense action scenes, good use of the booming effects as the bass is nice and punchy from the subwoofer and sound effects are strong coming from the surround channels. So, for the most part, lossless English track is pretty solid. Voice acting was also very well-done on the English dub track as well.

As for the Japanese track, on the back of the package it says that the audio is Dolby TrueHD 2.0 but when you see the menu of the disc, it is Dolby Digital 2.0 and the signal coming from the player and receiver shows it as Dolby Digital, so it's a missprint on the rear packaging.

I did enjoy the Japanese vocal track and for those who prefer watching their anime in Japanese, if you have a modern home theater receiver and a good 5.1, 7.2 or higher setup, you can have a more immersive setup by setting audio to come out on all channels. But it is important to note that the Japanese audio track is not lossless and I'm sure that anime Blu-ray fans who were excited about a Japanese lossless soundtrack may have issue with this.

Subtitles are in English.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

"D. Gray-Man: Season One, Part One" comes with the following special features:

* Episode 2 Audio Commentary - Featuring audio commentary for episode 2 by Asst. ADR Director and voice actor (for Allen Walker) Todd Haberkorn and Luci Christian (voice actress of Lenalee Lee). Todd talks about the episode and being a voice actor trying out for a role and Luci Christian talks about being a writer and voice actress for the series.
* Textless Opening and Ending Theme - Textless themes for Abingdon Boys School's "Innocent Sorrow" and the ending theme "Snow Kiss" by NIRGILIS.
* Trailers - Featuring FUNimation Entertainment trailers.

JUDGMENT CALL:

"D. Gray-Man" so far is an entertaining anime series. It happens to also be the longest anime series out on Blu-ray in the US and with over a hundred episodes, it's going to take some dedication to follow the series with each volume only containing 13-episodes.

In some way, I found "D. Gray-Man" as appealing as "Fullmetal Alchemist" but with only 13-episodes so far, it's too early to tell how the overall season progresses. One thing that I did enjoy about this TV series is that each episode is connected and there are not as many filler episodes. One thing that tends to drag a series is too many stand-alone episodes and the good news about "D. Gray-Man" is that there is always an episode arc in regards to Allen's missions, so that was quite a positive.

Character-wise, so far I've enjoyed the supporting characters such as Lenalee Lee, Yu Kanda, Komui and a few others. Although, I wonder if the entire series primarily focuses on Allen (which it does so far) and if Lenalee will have her own episodes further into the series. I also enjoyed the character designs and also the costume designs of the characters. So, my first impression plot-wise is that for the first 13-episodes, so far, so good.

As for the Blu-ray release, I know that there are people who may be dissatisfied that there is no Japanese Dolby TrueHD soundtrack despite the package displaying a lossless soundtrack but I will say the English lossless soundtrack was very good and well-acted, also there is good use of the surround channels and the subwoofer during the action sequences.

There are not as many special features included on this Blu-ray release and it would have been good to have a few more commentary tracks instead of just the one for episode 2.

Again, it's important to emphasize that "D. Gray-Man" is a 103-episode TV series, so it is a much longer series compared to the average 13 to 26-episode anime TV series. I do wish there was 26-episodes included on each Blu-ray release but with this series being released not long after the DVD release in the US (and is still being released in the US at this time), I can understand.

So, before stepping into "D. Gray-Man", you may want to make sure you are committed to staying the course of purchasing multiple volumes of this series on Blu-ray. Overall, I found "D. Gray-Man" to be an entertaining series thus far and is another anime TV series worth adding to your anime on Blu-ray collection.

Hot Shots!

Hot Shots! Review

It had been at least 10 years since I had seen Hot Shots so when I saw the title available to watch instantly online, I jumped at the chance. Valeria Golino is amazing, first the scene with the horse, then the lounge singing act...Lloyd Bridges steals every scene he is in, especially in the tower when he first flosses between his ears with a handkerchief and then swallows the earplugs, also shouting at a painting when he thinks it is the base and at the funeral of "Dead Meat". Cary Elwes, Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen all turn in hilarious performances as well and it features appearances by Ryan Stiles and Heidi Swedberg (Susan Ross from Seinfeld). Not 30 seconds goes by without a side-splitting sight gag, particularly during the flight deck scenes on the carrier. Classic Abrahams comedy!

Hot Shots! Feature

Hot Shots! Overview

Recruited to join a top-secret mission for the Air Force, a renegade pilot (Sheen) finds himself coping with an incompetent admiral (Bridges) and a carefully-selected squadron of flyers who are either inept or half-blind. He also winds up in competition with the corps' model of military perfection (Elwes) for the heart of the base's sultry psychiatrist (Golino)

Hot Shots! Specifications

The gang that created Airplane and The Naked Gun sets its sights on Top Gun in this often hilarious spoof starring Charlie Sheen, who previously only inspired laughs with his personal life. He plays Topper Harley, a fighter pilot with an ax to grind: clearing the family name. He gets involved in a relationship with Valerie Golino, a woman with an unusually talented stomach. But his mission is to avenge his father. Lloyd Bridges, late in his career, revealed an aptitude for this kind of silliness, here as a commander who is both incredibly dim and delightfully accident prone. Directed by Jim Abrahams, the film makes fun of a variety of other films as well, from Dances with Wolves to The Fabulous Baker Boys. It was so successful that they all returned in the sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux. --Marshall Fine

Dusty's Trail:TV Series

Dusty's Trail:TV Series Review

Ok, This show is silly, But I kinda like it! I really enjoy the fact that it's a sitcom set in the old west, and the writing is just as good as "Gilligan's Island", even if the cast don't have the same special chemistry of "Gilligan's Island". Considering it's a low budget syndicated sitcom from the mid-70's, I think it's pretty good. It isn't "Quality TV", But it's a tasteful "stupid" comedy. The only problems are the cheap sets (Remember, This ran in first-run syndication), and the cheap laugh-track (A common problem with light comedies). Picture quality is good, with the episodes taken from well-preserved 16mm film prints, which looks better than Video Taped shows like "Welcome Back Kotter". I can see why some hate this show, But for me, It's a fun!

The Imitators

The Imitators Review

The Imitators is an award-winning debut feature by independent English director Richie Winearls.

Set in the sleazy back-streets of south London, The Imitators is a pacy, tragi-comic account of an unlikely alliance between Kevin, a homeless drifter in need of a lucky break and a gang of small time hoods in need a getaway driver for the job that is going to move them into the big league.

A gritty, atmospheric tale of bank robbery, betrayal and bad driving, it follows the fortunes of the gang and their newest recruit in the run up to the job that will change their lives.

Directed with a raw and stylish energy, the film captures the desperation and comic self-delusion of a group of people looking for the fastest way out.

Launched to critical acclaim in the UK, it won the Fuji Cinematographer Award at the Raindance Film Festival and was winner of Young Jury Prize for the Best Feature Film at the 34th International Film Festival in Gijón, Spain and was also shown at Cannes, Edinburgh and Valencia Film Festivals.

Time Out described it as "Seductive....full of energy." Sunday Express call it "Energetic, raw and stylish....don't miss it."

The Imitators stars David Doyle (Judge Dredd and The Young Americans), Gary Beadle from TV's Absolutely Fabulous with cameo performances from former supermodel Sarah Stockbridge (Interview with a Vampire) and stand-up comedian Phil Cornwell (The Comic Strip Presents......).

The Imitators Overview

Troma Team Video proudly presents a suspensful and humorous tragic-comic tale of the struggle for sucess by outcasts on the wrong side of the law. Each driven by their own particular image of a hero they show themselves to be but pale imitations of their ideals and idols. High-strung Rock (Gary Beadle), soft spoken Sal (Pancho Russell), wide-eyed Space (Saltz), and token American Natch (John Bushell) are four small-time crooks who are offered a major score by a gangster named Boo. However, the group is short a getaway driver. Kevin (David Doyle) is a luckless slacker who has been wandering from one part of the country to another; after Rock takes pity on him and gives him a place to stay, it dawns on him that Kevin could repay his kindness to Rock by driving the getaway car. However, there's one hitch -- Kevin doesn't know how to drive, and the more Rock tries to teach him, the more befuddled he becomes. Fans of Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez will go wild for the exciting and hilarious action of The Imitators.

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple - Season Two, Part One Review

i truly enjoyed this anime when i first got it a year ago. i really got into it and i can say its one of my favorites. it only gets better with season 2. the fights get more intense and i just love the suspense. as soon as i finished watching these episodes (27-38 i believe) i went out and watched up until the last episodes (39-50) because i got so into it. dont wanna use spoilers but it doesnt disappoint. i highly recommend this especially if u have only seen season 1. i cant wait for part 2.

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple - Season Two, Part One Overview

When we last saw Kenichi, he was making the transition from wimp to warrior – okay, maybe no warrior, but he was definitely taking steps to man up.

Well, the world is starting to notice, which is good and bad. On the plus side, he’s making friends and getting more respect. In the minus column, his rep is growing faster than his skills, which is tricky now that every thug in town wants to test his new techniques. That means between street brawls and trying to score with Miu, Kenichi still has to hang tough with the six Martial Arts masters. Lucky for him, the training is getting more intense – because before Kenichi can finally stand tall, he’ll have to beat his fiercest opponent yet!

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple - Season Two, Part One contains episodes 27-38.

Severance

Severance Review

Take the Americanized Office television show, make it British again and change their paper company to a military defense company like Northrop Grumman, but more accessible and friendly. Send the group of them into the woods to a run-down military asylum where they are hunted like animals by blood-thirsty psychos, and you have the rip-roaring horror comedy that is Severance .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well-made horror comedies are a rare find. When I say well-made, I don't mean that there aren't quite a few horror movies out there that have giddily funny moments. Movies like The Toxic Avenger may blur the line, but they rely more on camp than a purer comedic element. I think it has to do with believability. There are some horror movies that find comedy in how a normal person would react to an abnormal situation. Shaun of the Dead excelled in this to a great length. Scenes such as his zombified step-father going crazy until he could turn off the radio are classic in my eyes. Although in the movie the zombies may not be too believable, Shaun's obliviousness to the situation, and finally his reaction, seem plausible, and only minorly exaggerated at times.

Enter Severance. The movie works much like Shaun of the Dead, and this is without reading other reviews which say the same damn thing without explaining why. It's true. The oblivious nature of the corporate employees of international weapons creator Palisade Defence is shown at the beginning, while they are all on a bus heading to their supposed safe destination at a "luxury lodge." It's a believable premise, complete with a tight-lipped staff manager(played by Tim McInnerny), a stoned-out techie(played by Danny Dyer), an anti-war hippie-type(played by Claudie Blakly), and a loveable, fat goon(played by Andy Nyman), among the rest of a stellar cast.

When their bus driver kicks them off the bus in front of a road not entirely on the beaten path, the crew decide to walk in the hope of finding their destination. What they find is a run-down building that could only be the corporate lodge if their company were instigating this trip during these economic times. While exploring, they come upon paperwork linking their company to Russian military activity and soldier dossiers. With this information they concoct elaborate camp-fire like tales of what went on in the building, the most comical belonging to Danny Dyer.

After the sighting of a peeping tom at a window, in the middle of this supposedly lifeless forest, the gang investigates a way to get the hell back to civilization, and are instead attacked by human-sized pygmies with guns, and fun times are had by all.

Some of the great scenes in this movie, without giving too much away:

-human meat pies

-a happy anecdote about human heads remaining conscious for a time after being severed from their body, with a morbid punch-line

-a rocket launcher gone awry

-Danny Dyer saying, "This is gonna hurt."

-Hot half-naked Scandanavian prostitutes with assault rifes

Planet 51

Planet 51 Review

This is a simple story, and it is sometimes silly. But it is family-safe and entertaining. The characters appear to be recycled from other movies, and it is somehow predictable. But the story moves smoothly and evenly, so that it keeps a good level of interest. Overall, it is a good family movie.

Planet 51 Feature

Planet 51 Overview

When Chuck the astronaut (Dwayne Johnson) lands on a distant planet filled with little green people, he is surprised to discover that we are not alone in the galaxy. But he gets the shock of his life when the residents of Planet 51 mistakenly believe that his presence is the start of an alien invasion of the human kind! Luckily, Lem (Justin Long) quickly realizes that Chuck is friendly and makes it his personal mission to help him return safely to his ship.

Planet 51 Specifications

What if there are creatures living on other planets in other galaxies? And what if those creatures are a lot like us? When American astronaut Chuck Baker (Dwayne Johnson) lands on what's supposed to be barren, rocky planet devoid of life, he gets a big surprise. It seems that Planet 51 is home to little green people who are living in what's basically 1950s Americana--or should that be 1950s Alieana? Chuck bears a marked resemblance to Planet 51's science-fiction comic book and horror movie characters the "Humaniacs," and hysteria breaks out because the little green men think his appearance marks the beginning of an alien invasion. Lem (Justin Long) is a junior curator at the local planetarium and one of the only people on the planet who is awed, rather than frightened, by the concept of a larger universe. While his fellow citizens set out to capture the invading alien, Lem believes Chuck when he declares that his mission is peaceful, and Lem risks his own safety to help him return to his ship and his home planet. With a little help from Rover (an American robot probe that has been sending rock samples back to Earth while ignoring the planet's life forms), Lem's neighbor and secret crush Neera (Jessica Biel), his friend Skiff (Seann William Scott), and hippie protester Glar (Alan Marriott), Lem just might be able to save Chuck. The question is--what will the personal consequences be for Lem? The story is an amusing twist on America's long-standing fascination with the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and the film has plenty of comic moments, but it ultimately lacks suspense and fails to truly engage the viewer. The result is a film that provides some laughs but is ultimately not that entertaining. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Full Force New Line Platinum Series DVD 4-Pack (Blade/Rush Hour/The Corruptor/Spawn)

Full Force New Line Platinum Series DVD 4-Pack (Blade/Rush Hour/The Corruptor/Spawn) Review

Blade proposes a new twist on the vampire myth. On the extras, you see the design of the character and his custom-made weapons. Nice to see Kristofferson again.

Rush Hour is lots of fun. On the extras, you see the process on how Jackie sets up an action sequence. There's some hilarious
bloopers too.

The Corruptor is the story of a policeman's compromises and the rookie who is thrown into this situation.

Spawn is an excellent live-action adaptation of the comic. Unlike the theater and TV versions, this DVD is rated "R". The jokes are dirtier and the fights are more graphically violent. Enjoyed the interviews with McFarlane very much.

Nicely priced package. Lots of extras on all 4 DVD. Good value.

Madagascar - Escape 2 Africa (Full Screen) Wrapped and Ready for Valentine's Day

Madagascar - Escape 2 Africa (Full Screen) Wrapped and Ready for Valentine's Day Review

Madagascar - Escape 2 Africa (Full Screen) Wrapped and Ready for Valentine's Day Overview

Your favorite castaways are back - still together and still lost! One of the top movies of the year, DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is "even better than the first!" (Mark Hyman, FOX-TV). You'll laugh out loud as this outrageous comedy takes you on an African adventure like no other.

Madagascar - Escape 2 Africa (Full Screen) Wrapped and Ready for Valentine's Day Specifications

The sequel to the animated movie Madagascar gives more of everything audiences loved in the first movie: More of the penguins; more of Julian, king of the lemurs; more musical bits of classic rock; and many, many more lions, zebras, hippos, and giraffes. In the first film, a quartet of coddled zoo animals found themselves shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar in a misguided effort to return them to the wild. InMadagascar: Escape 2 Africa, a failed attempt to fly back to New York maroons Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) in an animal preserve on the African continent, accompanied by the four deranged penguins and the lunatic lemur king (deliriously voiced by Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat). By wild coincidence, this is where Alex was born--and where his father is still the alpha lion, and where his malevolent uncle seeks to take over (let's call this an homage to The Lion King). The other beasts have their own story arcs, but really it's all an excuse for daffy comic bits. Though the result is disposable, it's also entirely entertaining. The action sequences pop with dizzying spectacle; though some jokes are mainstream fodder, more often they're surprisingly quirky and engagingly oddball. This is the best kind of cotton candy filmmaking--it dissolves into nothing, but it's oh-so-sweet to the taste. --Bret Fetzer

U Turn

U Turn Review

According to my opinion this movie is a cult classic. The atmosphere and humour contained within is such an addiction. I truly rate this movie as being ranked in the top 100 best movies of all time. When I first watched it I was immediatly absorbed in to it completly that I viewed it on repeated occasions. After that it changed my entire perspective on movies.

Oliver Stone is a director to be reckoned with. His distinctive style of directing is in a class of its own. No other director can match up to his calibre. His previous movies suc as 'jfk' and 'natural born killers' received much critisism and box office success. However this venture was in a different category. He has managed to make a brilliant adaptation of John Ridley's novel 'straw dogs'. It stays loyal to the novel as well. The transition of the novel to the screen has resulted in a spectacular outcome. For Oliver Stone this movie probably did not require as much effort on his part due to the simplicity of the plot itself, but still the movie is high on quality.

***************SPOILERS AHEAD**********************
The movie centres around the theme of 'bad luck' The main lead bobby 'sean penn' is a desperate individual who is determined to fulfill his mission of pying back a russian gangster a loan. He is forced to take a stop in the small town of Superior (Arizona) due to car trouble. He leaves it in the company of Billy Bob Thornton. Meanwhile he tempted to spend time with Jeniffer Lopez though afterwards he discovers that she is married to Nick Nolte. Later a robbery in a store ends in his money being shredded. He is then talked in to killing Lopez by her husband, however he felt unable to. After his attempt to leave the town is unsuccessful he decides to go ahead with the plan to kill Nolte for his hidden stash of cash with Lopez.
********************END OF SPOILERS**************************

The main character is suffering from a case of bad luck syndrome. The movie presents this from a humourous perspective. Bobby's character has negative as well as positive shades. The movie totally relies on his presence to progress through all the segmants. The theme is in the same vain as 'body heat', 'the hot spot', and 'red rock west'. Many situations will seem reminiscent from those movies. This is a symbolic movie and many metephors are present in the scenes.
In regards to the plot, substance is low. However the cinematography, close up camera angles really add to the movies quality. At certain points the movie will feel like a comedy drama with elements of seriousness. The close up frames captures the human feelings of the characters at those moments.
The cinematography is truly the highlight of the movie as well as the scenes between Billy Bob and Sean Penn. The chemistry in the interactions betwen the two make history. The pace of the movie is slow but the viewer's curiousity for the character makes one watch on in eagerness. Maybe a ten to fifteen minute edit would enhance it overall.

Ennio Morricone's background score injects life and a certain atmosphere in to the movie. The combination of western sounds with his italian style of music is a treat to listen to. The music compliments to the atmosphere of the movie and to the feeling of the lanscape of Arizona.

This is the perfect getaway movie if you enjoyed 'Thelma and Louise'

U Turn Overview

A small-time gambler with an overdue debt in Vegas and a broken radiator hose is finding it hard to get out of Superior, Arizona.
Genre: Feature Film-Action/Adventure
Rating: R
Release Date: 3-DEC-2002
Media Type: DVD

U Turn Specifications

Oliver Stone used such words as "liberating" and "fun" to talk about U Turn's relatively quick production schedule of 42 days. Stone's ideas of film fun, however, are something older generations would call sick. This film is a Southwestern noir tale about Bobby Cooper (Sean Penn), a hotshot who is stuck in the tight confines of Superior, Arizona, when his car breaks down. His subsequent adventure is a meatball comedy--loud, obnoxious, and violent, and stuffed with diffused light, a hot cast, and a no-fat Ennio Morricone score. This film has plenty of odd characters, but you never really find out much about them. Bobby's first encounters include a repulsive mechanic (Billy Bob Thornton under the grease) and a blind Indian (Jon Voight under the makeup). Then there's Grace McKenna (a sizzling Jennifer Lopez), who is as dangerous as the curves of her red sundress. Bobby's got time to kill, and Grace seems more than willing. Unfortunately, it seems that Bobby has never seen a movie such as A Touch of Evil; if he had, he would know it can only get worse. About the time Grace's husband, Jake (Nick Nolte), shows up, Bobby is knee-deep in murder plots and double-crosses.

The first 40 minutes or so are "fun" to a point. Penn is the perfect near-creep to root for, and as he wanders back into town after meeting Grace, the eclectic characters pile up. But soon it gets monotonous, tiring, and just plain ugly. And when incest and bloody fights begin, the fun is gone. If Penn weren't so solid an actor and able to be empathetic in the most morose situations, the movie would be unwatchable at stretches. Lopez makes another good impression, but this is not a performance that stands out. Nolte, raspy and ill-looking, is the Lee Marvin of the '90s. Before U Turn is over, you are already wondering if Oliver Stone will do something else, something more important, soon. --Doug Thomas

From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money [Region 2]

From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money [Region 2] Review

What a great movie. A real put-on of a horror flick with Robert Patrick (The Unit, Terminator 2) as Buck; one of the would-be bank robbers who doesn't end up as a Vampire. And Bo Hopkins (Smokey And The Bandit Movies, Killer Elite, The Wild Bunch) as the Sherrif Lawson; hunting down Luther (Duane Whitaker) the leader of the gang.

It's very funny how the movie starts off with vampires attacking people in a movie, only to become real when the bank robbers head down to Mexico to rob a bank; as it turns out at night - the only time vampires can come out.

Anyway, without dragging on with the plot; one vampire; bartender Danny Trejo (Delta Farce, Grindhouse, Halloween, Heat, Spy Kids) starts off the bloddletting biting Luther; so forth and so on. A great short movie that you immediately recognize as a Quentin Tarantino flick once the Western-style guitar starts twanging. Blood and gore galore, with many comedic moments, as one would expect from a Quentin Tarantino collaboration. The ubiquitous crosses are pulled out any which way they can be to ward off the blood-suckers with the resultant spike in the heart or Sun rising and the "you-know-what" conclusion. Refreshing humor.

From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money [Region 2] Overview

B-movie mavens turned A-list genre fiends Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino teamed up in 1996 to take vampire gothic south of the border into spaghetti Western territory for the gory cult film From Dusk Till Dawn. The high-concept mix of southwestern criminals versus supernatural nasties proved too irresistible for either of the video-hound creators to allow it to remain dead (or undead, as the case may be), so they plotted and produced a pair of direct-to-video sequels. Tarantino takes a story credit on the first, a heist film coscripted and directed by Scott Speigel. A Mexican bank robbery helmed by drawling criminal Robert Patrick (Terminator 2) turns into a literal bloodbath when his crew are turned into hungry bloodsuckers. Speigel, a buddy of Sam Raimi, tops both Tarantino and Rodriguez for sheer cinematic acrobatics, putting his camera in the most absurd places (even from inside the mouth of a vampire chomping down on a victim) and driving the film with adrenaline-charged overkill, but despite some clever scenes and a hilarious Psycho spoof, it turns into another aggressively trashy latex-mask and rubber-bat gorefest as cops and robbers team up against the fanged gang. Bo Hopkins costars as the police detective dogging Patrick's trail. Bruce Campbell and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen make cameos in the jokey opening sequence and Speigel and fellow director Kevin Smith briefly appear as vampire bait. Bartender Danny Trejo is the only returning cast member. --Sean Axmaker

Sundance Channel Ultimate Collection - Amazon.com Exclusive

Sundance Channel Ultimate Collection - Amazon.com Exclusive Review

Though I haven't seen every movie in this collection, I felt I had to give it five stars to offset the review of the one guy who seems to have seen NONE of the movies in his collection. Okay, perhaps he's seen "In This World", since it's the only movie here he recommends. The rest of his opinion seems to be based entirely on the number of "stars" the individual movies were given in other Amazon reviews. Which is a fine way to evaluate films if your sole criterion is, "Is it popular?" But if you're a viewer who, like me, isn't particularly interested in viewing lowest-common-demoninator mulch for the masses, you might ask questions like, "Is it clever? Is it moving? Is it funny? Is it novel? Does it make me think?" If you fall into this latter category, there are definitely some films here you should check out, most notably: "Rick" (a dark, sardonic gem featuring Bill Pullman giving the performance of his career as one of the most loathesome business executives in movie history), "Die Mommie Die" (drag performer Charles Busch's hilarious tribute to the overwrought Douglas Sirk melodramas of old), "Scotland PA" (a very funny Macbeth update, set in the world of chain restaurants, "McBeth" being the obvious joke), and "Mule Skinner Blues" (a compelling, dark but humor-filled and human, documentary about trailer park misfits coming together to make a movie). "Melvin Goes To Dinner" is funny but uneven... which is too bad, because Bob Odenkirk (of "Mr. Show" and "Ben Stiller Show" fame) was the creative force behind it. Of the films here I've seen, only "Amy's O" (a.k.a., "Amy's Orgasm") isn't worth recommending. It's thunderously unfunny and not a fraction as clever as it seems to think it is. The other reviewer cautioned you not to "waste" your money on this collection. My only caution is that you not waste your time listening to the opinions of the uninformed. If the remaining films in this collection are comparable to the ones I've seen, then you could spend your money in worse ways...

Wild America (Snap Case)

Wild America (Snap Case) Review

Great movie for kids who love the outdoors. Our 4 and 7 year old have watched this time and time again. Funny scenes and my boys thought it was neat that the movie is based on a true story. Interesting if you have ever been a real Marty Stauffer fan.

Wild America (Snap Case) Overview

Based on the true story of the daredevil Stouffer brothers, "Wild America."

DVD Features:
Production Notes
Theatrical Trailer

Wild America (Snap Case) Specifications

You wouldn't know it by watching the mostly ridiculous escapades on display in Wild America, but this comedy/adventure for young boys is marginally based on the true story of Marshall, Mark, and Marty Stouffer, three young brothers who successfully pursued their dream of becoming wildlife filmmakers. From their home in the South, the Stouffer boys embark on a cross-country trek to the West, where they hope to get rare footage from inside the dreaded Cave of the Sleeping Bears. Along the way they encounter cute British tourist girls, deadly alligators, a rampaging moose, and an Air Force fighter on a bombing range. In other words, Wild America is about as contrived as it could possibly be and still claim to be based on reality, but it is harmless enough for young viewers with its wholesome message about bravery, hard work, and family togetherness. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from television's Home Improvement) leads the young cast of adventurers. --Jeff Shannon

Topkapi

Topkapi Review

Topkapi Overview

A 'skillful blend of romance and comedy (The Hollywood Reporter), Topkapi shimmers with hilarity, action and great performances! Fun-filled and suspenseful, it's an incredibly ingenious affair [and] a considerable pleasure to watch (Newsweek)! Trouble brews beneath the exotically curved towers of Istanbul when the equally exoticand equally curvedElizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri) recruits her former lover (Maximilian Schell) in a scheme to heist the pride of the city's Topkapi museum: a jewel-encrusted dagger. But the job soon turns into a high-tension, high-wire performanceliterallywhen the bumbling fall guy (Peter Ustinov) and other amateurs they ve hired as help find they'll have to lift their prize while dangling from the museum's vaulted ceiling!

Topkapi Specifications

Director Jules Dassin (Night and the City, The Naked City) fashioned this breezy and intricate 1964 thriller with a sly comic bent, and it enjoyed international popularity and became an influence for other high-toned European caper films. Peter Ustinov (Spartacus, Death on the Nile) won an Academy Award for his performance as a hapless driver, clueless to the plans of his cohorts, two jewel thieves who plan to steal a priceless dagger from the Topkapi museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Maximilian Schell (Deep Impact, Judgment at Nuremburg) and Melina Mercouri (The Victors, The Gypsy and the Gentleman) play the jet-setting thieves, who choose a motley band of amateurs instead of pros in order to throw off the authorities. But when Ustinov is apprehended by the cops, he agrees to act as a spy in order to thwart the robbery. Eventually, Ustinov must choose between saving his own hide and remaining loyal to the seductive Mercouri as the machinations of the robbery become ever more complex. Sleek and entertaining, Topkapi is filled with intrigue and thrills at every turn. --Robert Lane

Police Story 2 (Special Collector's Edition)

Police Story 2 (Special Collector's Edition) Review

I loved the first police story, but was a little let down with the second. Though the action was amped up, the story was toned down (presumably to allow for more action). Also, it was a little too similar to the first in terms of tone and presentation. There girlfriend who always does silly things, still did silly things, and is still constantly complaining about jackie. Jackie himself still played a nice guy, who has to save the day doing amazing stunts. The film even ends with the same song playing over outakes as was in the first. Overally, it was a entertaining flick, just not that unique. If you liked the first police story, you'll probably be happy. If not, there's nothing to change your mind this time around.

Police Story 2 (Special Collector's Edition) Overview

(Martial Arts/Foreign) The explosive sequel to Jackie Chan’s groundbreaking original, Police Story 2 is famous internationally for some of the most daring and inventive stunt sequences ever committed to film. Despite his success at apprehending criminals, Kevin Chan's unorthadox approach to his work as a police officer sees him demoted to the traffic branch. Despite this, the man he put behind bars is now out of prison, and has vowed to make his life a misery.

Police Story 2 (Special Collector's Edition) Specifications

Before making a name for himself in Hollywood with the Rush Hour franchise, Jackie Chan was already an international superstar, thanks to Hong Kong films such as Police Story and its sequels. While not quite up to par with that film, Police Story 2 (released in 1988) still manages to pack quite the punch, picking up where Police Story left off. Chan's Ka Kui has been demoted from detective to traffic cop, something that depresses him but is a source of relief for his gorgeous girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung, Hero), who is hoping that they can live in peace. But hell hath no fury like a Triad member scorned, and Ka Kui finds himself a hunted man when the gangsters he locked away seek revenge. While the plot is familiar, the impeccably choreographed action sequences are a work of art. Exhibiting both strength and grace, Chan who also directed and co-wrote the screenplay as well as performed all his own stunts) is both heroic and comical as he fends off hordes of villains. He's in fine form, whether he's beating up his opponent or about to get bullied by a waif of a handicapped man. Chan is famous for including a blooper reel at the end of his movies, and while the bloopers for his later films appear almost forced--as if he had to scrounge around to come up with good material--his earlier pictures conclude with gasp-inducing mistakes that make the viewer wonder how one man's body can endure this kind of physical punishment. The DVD offers both the Cantonese version with English (and Spanish) subtitles, as well as a cheesy English dubbed treatment. Opt for the subtitles: The action will more than speak for itself. --Jae-Ha Kim
