Repli-Kate
Repli-Kate Review

Replikate is about a college student named whats-his-face. And whats-his-face is into genetic biology. Along with the team of college scientists and the proffesor played by Eugine Levy (Look him up if you dont know)... anyway, Whats-his-face and the lab geeks are working on cloning, and there testing there cloning machine out on hamsters.
That is until Kate stops by. Kate is a reporter who is interested in how the cloning procedures are going... and wouldnt you know it, she accidently gets clones! (Who saw that coming? come on, raise your hand)
When whats-his-face wakes up from la la land he realises he has an illeagel clone of Kate that the real Kate doesnt know about and he has to hide her from everyone, or else he's in deep *BEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppppppp* (learnt that from watching the Osbournes!)
But the thing is, with this new repli-Kate clone, she may be identicle in looks and parts, but she has to learn. So Whats-his-face and his English or Aussie speaking sidekick decide to teach her how to be the ultimate women... through there eyes. But instead end up creating a male in a womens body. Oh, and then the end is like different and stuff and watch it to find out.
Personaly I think Ali Laundry did a great job of playing both original Kate and Repli-kate. The two personalities come accross great, and she delivers some of the best lines i've heard in a while. Which is what suprises me no one has reviewed this 2002 comedy yet!
It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you feel warm inside...... well, it will make you laugh at least.... it's no academy award winning masterpeice, but i wouldnt wipe my bottom with something like Titanic (BLurghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..i dont remember eating that)
Replikate is something along the lines of Wierd Science (remember that, or am I showing my age?) but instead of her being a genie, they changed it to show what a women would be like if she acted like a man.
Rent it at least... it wont kill you... i'm still here arnt I?
Repli-Kate Overview
Weird science enters the Twenty First Century in this laugh out loud tale of cloning gone mad! Young geneticist Max Fleming may be brilliant enough to have created the world's first cloning machine, but when it comes to women, he's a moron. So when he accidently clones the girl of his dreams, he seizes the opportunity to create what he feels will be the perfect woman - one who acts just like a guy. But Max soon realizes that the differences between men and women are what makes it all worthwhile!

Galaxy Quest (Deluxe Edition)
Galaxy Quest (Deluxe Edition) Review

The most marvelous thing about a gem like "Galaxy Quest" is how it manages to skewer - but gentle affection - science fiction conventions, a cheesy and long-canceled television science fiction show, the rabid fans of said show, the long-unemployed actors who played the leads in it, and yet at the same time tell a rather ripping-good yarn incorporating some genuinely moving moments. (And Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart and William Shatner have, at the very least, proved that they are jolly good sports about being ribbed so mercilessly.)
A lot of the comedy in Galaxy comes from the casting - and not just that there were top-flight acting talents in the lead roles - it is the actors, playing actors, who are playing characters who are so deliciously off-type from their actor-persona. For instance, Tony Shaloub plays Fred Kwan, (passive and suspiciously substance-addled) who is cast as TSgt. Chen, supremely competent spaceship engineer. Alan Rickman is Alexander Dane, over-wrought Shakespearean, passionate about his "craft" - who apparently has hated every minute of being the lizardoid alien, Doctor Lazarus. Sigourney Weaver as Gwen DeMarco - grounded and rather level-headed - is the sexpot Lt. Madison, the communications officer who apparently went through episode after episode repeating whatever the computer told her. And Tim Allen is Jason Nesmith - self-centered and defiantly not the heroic type - is playing Captain Peter Quincy Taggart, of the NSEA Protector, who never gives up, and never abandons his crew. Along with Daryl Mitchell, as the grown-up kid actor Tommy Weber, once the helmsman Laredo, and Guy (Sam Rockwell), who had a bit part in a single episode, and "died" in true red-shirt Enterprise crewman fashion - all of them are transported into space, onto a ship which in every detail is the NSEA Protector. To their astonishment and horror, they are being asked to be the characters they only played, on behalf of the Thermians. The Thermians are a race of aliens who have unfortunately run afoul of a particularly brutal enemy, Sarris and his evil minions. The NSEA Protector is their last, best hope. Alas, although technologically sophisticated, the poor Thermians know not of story-telling and entertainment. And that's the plot - of the actors being given a chance to be what they only appeared to be, and the leader of the Thermians, Malthezar becoming what he wants to be - an inspiring leader. It's a movie that bears watching again, and again.
Of the extras on this release, the funniest are the omitted scenes - Doctor Lazarus being given a tour of his quarters on board the Protector by the hospitable Thermians is hysterically funny. According to the commentary, some thought was given to showing the Thermian's idea of the other characters' quarters as well - which would have been also terrifically funny, but there are so many other comic scenes, lines and throw-away-bits that omission of that gag is hardly noticed. The other notable feature is a version of the movie entirely in the Thermian language. A little of that bit goes a very long way.
Galaxy Quest (Deluxe Edition) Overview
Genre: Comedy
Rating: PG
Release Date: 12-MAY-2009
Media Type: DVD
Galaxy Quest (Deluxe Edition) Specifications
You don't have to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy Galaxy Quest, but it certainly helps. A knowingly affectionate tribute to Trek and any other science fiction TV series of the 1960s and beyond, this crowd-pleasing comedy offers in-jokes at warp speed, hitting the bull's-eye for anyone who knows that (1) the starship captain always removes his shirt to display his manly physique; (2) any crew member not in the regular cast is dead meat; and (3) the heroes always stop the doomsday clock with one second to spare. So it is with Commander Taggart (Tim Allen) and the stalwart crew of the NSEA Protector, whose intergalactic exploits on TV have now been reduced to a dreary cycle of fan conventions and promotional appearances. That's when the Thermians arrive, begging to be saved from Sarris, the reptilian villain who threatens to destroy their home planet.
Can actors rise to the challenge and play their roles for real? The Thermians are counting on it, having studied the "historical documents" of the Galaxy Quest TV show, and their hero worship (not to mention their taste for Monte Cristo sandwiches) is ultimately proven worthy, with the help of some Galaxy geeks on planet Earth. And while Galaxy Quest serves up great special effects and impressive Stan Winston creatures, director Dean Parisot (Home Fries) is never condescending, lending warm acceptance to this gentle send-up of sci-fi TV and the phenomenon of fandom. Best of all is the splendid cast, including Sigourney Weaver as buxom blonde Gwen DeMarco; Alan Rickman as frustrated thespian Alexander Dane; Tony Shalhoub as dimwit Fred Kwan; Daryl Mitchell as former child-star Tommy Webber; and Enrico Colantoni as Thermian leader Mathesar, whose sing-song voice is a comedic coup de grâce. --Jeff Shannon

Midnight Run
Midnight Run Review

You end up memorizing Midnight Run. The best lines are unmatched anywhere in cinema ("Is this gonna upset me?" "I think it's safe to say that.") The hilarious back-and-forth between DeNiro and Grodin is perfectly timed and natural & the rest of the cast is AMAZING: Yaphet Kotto, Joe Pantoliano, John Ashton, Dennis Farina...and the bumbling mob duo played by Richard Foronjy & Robert Miranda. Midnight Run can't help but make you feel great, and you'll wish they still made movies like this one.
Midnight Run Overview
Bounty hunter Jack Walsh's latest job is to find Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas, a mob accountant. That is, unless the feds and the mob don't find him first. A terrific action-comedy from the director of "Beverly Hills Cop."
Midnight Run Specifications
Director Martin Brest rocketed to the top of Hollywood's A list with the blockbuster success of Beverly Hills Cop, and this 1988 follow-up is even better. Midnight Run is a genuine rarity--an action comedy that's dramatically satisfying--thanks to a sharp script by George Gallo, the superb teaming of Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin, and Brest's consummate skill in combining suspense and humor with well-developed characters. De Niro plays a maverick bounty hunter whose latest assignment is Grodin, an accountant accused of embezzling from the Mob. De Niro thinks he's in for an easy job, transporting Grodin (who's afraid to fly) from New York to Los Angeles, but soon discovers that both the FBI and the Mafia are hot on Grodin's trail. Equal parts road trip, action thriller, and a quirky character study, Midnight Run moves at a breakneck pace but still gives De Niro and Grodin time to create rich, memorable performances as two men who seem to be opposites, but gradually develop mutual respect and admiration. Mainstream entertainment at its best. --Jeff Shannon

Hands Across the Border / Billy the Kid Returns
Hands Across the Border / Billy the Kid Returns Review

I'm not a full fledged expert on Roy Rogers films so when I was reading reviews, the Roan Group kept coming up as the best of the digitizing. Well I've watched both movies on this disk and they are pretty good. In Hands across the border, which in my opinion has plot problems... their is a bit where the lips and the words are not fully synchronized in the first scene at the Ranch. But it may be from the original film, I don't know. It's not a problem though watching the film. Hands Across the border is the movie where Roy meets Trigger. It's not clear that trigger belongs to him by the end of the movie, but Roy rides him as if.
In Billy the Kid returns, we have Roy as Billy, and then again as the man mistaken for Billy. (funny how people in the movie could make that mistake!) But in this movie the plot is fairly straight forward, and easy to follow with lots of gun play, fast and furious riding, and the standard group of bad guys who learned to shoot at "The Empire's storm trooper shooting school." (In other words, they can't hit the broad side of a barn.)
Still these movies are a slice of Americana and fun to watch. And look for the other 2 DVD's that the Roan group did.Heldorado/In Old Cheyenne, Roy Rogers, Vol. 1: Roll On Texas Moon/King of the Cowboys/The Days of Jesse James

Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors
Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors Review

I don't have this DVD, but I did have the pleasure of viewing this film from Moscow's Gorky Studios several times a few years back, and I can safely say that this is a wonderfully enchanting and imaginative movie. Part action-adventure and part musical, "Kingdom Of The Crooked Mirrors" is a movie that young children will adore...the production value for the time (1963) is remarkably high, almost "Wizard Of Oz" quality. This could a great film for someone like Disney to re-make--I think it would work well in live-action or animated form. The characters are well drawn-out and often very funny, and the plotline is clever and imaginative. One might not normally expect a movie such as this to emerge from the repressive conditions of old Soviet Russia, but here it is, and the children who've seen it are all the better for it. Thank you, Alexandr Rou, for giving us this hidden gem!
Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors Overview
Little Olya never listened to her grandmother's advice, but one day an old magic mirror allows Olya to meet her own reflection, a girl named Yalo. Together they enter a kingdom of crooked mirrors, where normal mirrors are outlawed because evil, dishonest people can't face their true selves. A homecoming for Olya proves even harder when she tries to get Yalo to lose her bad habits from the other side. An enchanting, whimsical fantasy for the whole family!

Cyrano de Bergerac / The Son of Monte Cristo
Cyrano de Bergerac / The Son of Monte Cristo Review

No, I am not pushing Wrigley's Doublemint Gum. Quite the contrary, there is absolutely nothing "gumming up the works" in these two stunning releases from MARENGO FILMS. I went through every release of CYRANO DE BERGERAC on the DVD market before trying the MARENGO version, and I can now say all competitors pale in comparison. Throw away all those other dupey, soft focus copies with hissing sound. MARENGO has made it possible to see CYRANO just as it was on a theater screen in 1950. The picture is razor sharp and the sound is loud and clear from start to finish. What a joy it was to watch such a beautiful transfer of this marvelous film!
And the exact same can be said for SON OF MONTE CRISTO. After going through nearly all of the other horrible transfers of this title, I am delighted to report that MARENGO has hit the nail squarely on the head. The picture and sound are both truly exquisite.
And folks, take a look at the low, low price. You get two fantastic films in fabulous transfers for less than you generally pay for just one DVD title. Three cheers for MARENGO FILMS!!!

George and the Dragon
George and the Dragon Review

I really enjoyed this movie. The only thing that could have used improvement was the special effects (the dragons). James Purefoy was a sheer delight. He is one of the most natural actors I have seen and really becomes his character. There is a good bit of violence but not much bloodshed.
George and the Dragon Overview
The first crusade to free the Holy Land has ended. A mass of weary knights, squires, soldiers of fortune and priests are making their way home across a Europe that has changed forever. An age of legends and mystery is about to unfold.

On returning to England, George heads north where he’s heard the land is good and the population sparse and of a kindly King named Edgaar.
He finds King Edgaar in a terrible state. His beautiful daughter, Lunna has recently disappeared. In return for a small plot of land, George agrees to search for Princess Lunna. With Edgaar’s faithful servant, Elmendorf, George sets out.

Before long, Jack and the kids are racing toward the biggest heist of his career -- pursued by the cops and the FBI on a hair-raising, action-packed cross-country chase! This nonstop hit delivers an arresting combination of action and comedy sure to entertain everyone!
Father Hood Specifications
Patrick Swayze is a goofball criminal who suddenly finds himself strapped with his two kids. His teenage daughter escapes from an abusive orphanage, demanding her father rescue her younger brother. Dad, who may be a thief, is also a softie who decides to rescue his kids by kidnapping them from a school bus. The plot is lackluster and reveals few surprises as Swayze tries to follow his life of crime, only to be thwarted by his needy children. Child abuse, parental abandonment, and crime do not exactly make for slapstick, and this is too leaden to thrill as an adventure flick. Swayze, with his annoying laugh and manic mannerisms, is less convincing than the kids (Sabrina Lloyd and Brian Bonsall), who exude realistic desperation and pain. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Red Heat (Special Edition)
Red Heat (Special Edition) Review

A fun shoot-im-up with lots of good chase scenes and a few good plot twists. One of the things that make the movie is Arnold going around strait faced and like the terminator without the metal endoskeleton.
Thoroughly rotten bad guy and drug dealer Viktor Rostavile `Rosta' (Ed O'Toss) flees the USSR after encountering Capt. Ivan Danko `USSR State Police'. We find that he has big plans in Chicago where he plans to do a deal with Abdul Elijah `incarcerated Revolutionary political leader' (Brent Jennings). Abdul has an agenda of his own. Everyone's plans must be adjusted as Danko turns up in Chicago and teams up with Det. Sgt. Art Ridzik `Chicago Police Dept.' (James Belushi) to track down and retrieve Rosta.
In the process of tracking we meet all kinds of dangerous criminals and beautiful women. Ridzik almost gets killed because of his instant affinity with a blond wayward nurse; he is in for a surprise. We also have the obligatory vehicle chase scene with a different twist.
Aside from the main players there are quite a few recognizable character actors which add significantly the movie.

Red Heat (Special Edition) Specifications
After scoring a hit with the Eddie Murphy-Nick Nolte cop thriller 48 Hours, director Walter Hill returned to the buddy formula with this half-ridiculous, half-invigorating action flick about humorless Russian cop Ivan Danko (Arnold Schwarzenegger). He follows a drug dealer from Moscow to Chicago, where he's matched up with city cop Art Ridzik (James Belushi), whose work ethic is considerably more relaxed. Most of the humor revolves around Danko's grumpy reaction to good ol' American capitalism, while Ridzik urges him to chill out. Red Heat is not bad as action comedies go, but only if you get into the absurd spirit of this predictable fare, in which the unlikely buddies get to wisecrack and act casually while mayhem erupts everywhere they go. Incidentally, Red Heat was the first American film allowed to shoot in Moscow's Red Square. --Jeff Shannon

Shallow Grave
Shallow Grave Review

I have seen this movie twice. This is a brilliant movie that is similar to A Simple Plan, but much more entertaining. 3 friends who share a large apartment decide to rent one of their rooms. They make a game out of embarrassing every applicant until they take in a gangster. The gangster dies with a suitcase full of money left. They stash a dead gangster's body and hide the money. Meanwhile, two nasty gangsters are torturing people along their search for the suitcase of money. Which, adds pressure to the 3 prankster friends, who start getting on each other's nerves and distrust mounts. Some formally nice people turn hard, cunning and a bit crazy. Eventually, even murderous. The killing scenes are done suspenseful, but tasteful. The end totally threw me off, but it did make sense. Well worth watching. Full of British Humor and irony.
Doug Setter, Bsc. author of One Less Victim: A Prevention Guide and Stomach Flattening
Shallow Grave Overview
Three friends push the boundaries of trust in this hermetically sealed shocker (Los Angeles Times) from the creators of Trainspotting. Starring Kerry Fox (The Hanging Garden), Christopher Eccleston (Elizabeth) and Ewan McGregor (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), Shallow Grave is a masterpiece of terror (Movieline), riddled with hairpin turns (Boxoffice) that takes you on a fantastic ride to the lowest depths of human nature. Juliet (Fox), David (Eccleston) and Alex (McGregor) find that their new reclusive roommate has not left the bedroom for days. After kicking in the door they discover his drug over-dosed corpse and a suitcase full of money! Fatefully choosing to keep the money, they know they have to get rid of the remains. But the body won't stay buried and a careless trail from the shallow grave leads the policeand two money-hungry thugsback to the trio. And as the stakes get higher, so does the body count, not to mention their paranoia which is quickly putting their friendships in jeopardy forever!
Shallow Grave Specifications
The first feature from director Danny Boyle, producer Andrew MacDonald, and screenwriter John Hodge (who went on to make the enormously popular Trainspotting, the not-so-well-received A Life Less Ordinary, and The Beach), Shallow Grave begins with three obnoxious roommates mockingly interrogating applicants who want to share their spacious flat. The guy they finally choose doesn't last long--they find him dead from a drug overdose along with a suitcase full of money that he no longer needs. They decide to keep the money; this of course requires that they discreetly dispose of the body, which proves to be a gruesome, traumatic business. They begin to suspect each other of betrayal and become increasingly deranged. The movie wants to be a satirical comment on the greed of British yuppies but is more an exercise in stylish paranoia, where the color of the walls matters more than why the characters behave the way they do. The clever cinematography and macabre humor make Shallow Grave worth watching, just don't expect to like anyone in it. Starring the very hip trio of Kerry Fox (An Angel at My Table, The Last Days of Chez Nous), Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Velvet Goldmine, Star Wars: Episode I--The Phantom Menace), and Christopher Eccleston (Jude, Elizabeth). --Bret Fetzer

The Last Boy Scout
The Last Boy Scout Review

"The Last Boy Scout" follows the typical Bruce Willis formula that made him a household name in the late '80s. A shaky marriage, a down on his luck PI, lots of action and shooting and an eager and willing participant make this one of Bruce's best movies. In this picture Bruce plays the title role, aka Joe Hallenbeck who goes up against a ruthless killer who just happened to kill Jimmy Dix's (played wonderfully by Damon Wayans) girlfriend. I enjoy this movie because it's pure Bruce Willis. He is in nearly even scene and displays lots of dangerous action moves. I love how he takes 2 handguns and holds them up to the bad guys, that's so hot. I also like the part when he told one of the thugs "if you hit me again I'm going to kill you." Take one guess what Bruce did... There's also an interesting subplot involving Joe's daughter (Danielle Harris, from the "Halloween" movies and the series "Roseanne"). I thought it was so funny how they spoke to each other with that puppet. If you don't mind (lots) of cussing, lots of shooting and a whole bunch of Bruce in your face than you must see this picture.

The Last Boy Scout Specifications
In giving 1991's The Last Boy Scout a three-star review, critic Roger Ebert was properly performing his duty as an objective reporter, praising the filmmakers' professional skill while observing that "the only consistent theme of the film is its hatred of women." For the purposes of this capsule review, there's no such obligation to level-headed fairness; the simple truth is, this ultraviolent, action-packed vehicle for Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans is disgustingly rotten to the core. Not only is it fueled by a bitter and spiteful attitude toward women, it's also the kind of profanely vulgar movie that doesn't hesitate to put foul-mouthed children in the path of vicious thugs and potentially deadly situations. Willis plays an ex-secret service agent turned private detective who is hired to protect a stripper (Halle Berry) and then teams up with the stripper's boyfriend (Wayans), a disgraced NFL star who was kicked out of football for gambling. They catch on to a criminal plot leading all the way up to a corrupt football team owner who wants to legalize gambling on pro football. Willis and Wayans get in and out of all sorts of trouble along the way, and naturally there are plenty of explosions to go along with the brutal beatings, gunfire, and constant cussing. Shane Black (of Lethal Weapon infamy) set a Hollywood record (since broken, several times) for the sale price of his slick but vile screenplay, and Top Gun director Tony Scott handles the action with his trademark gloss and high-impact style. But, seriously, is this a movie that anyone could bear to watch twice? --Jeff Shannon

Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete Second Season
Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete Second Season Review

Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Season Two is a very good sophomore season. They were still looking for their exact stride, but were getting closer to the mark. We saw the exit of Tracy Scoggins as Cat Grant, Michael Landesas the first Jimmy Olsen, and John Shea as Lex Luthor. Personally, I liked the old Jimmy and the Cat Grant character but the networks said that Michael Landes looked to much like Dean Cain and the Cat Grant character was to adult for the time slot. What are the fans to do? But never fear, Jimmy was back with Justin Wallin who did an admiral job at being the bearer of bad news over and over and over... But enough about what they changed, what stayed the same? Dean Cain makes a great Clark Kent and an acceptable Superman (I will always look to Christopher Reeves for the ultimate Superman- You will believe a man can Fly). Teri Hatcher puts out an excellent showing as one of the best Lois Lanes EVER, not a cigarette chomping witch and not a push-over, but a confident self-assured career women. K Callen and Eddie Jones are back as the Kents. Lane Smith is back as the Elvis loving Perry White.
In this season, there are some terrific moments and some stellar episodes. Ending with one of the best cliffhanger episodes for fun television, "And the Answer is....". Don't miss the christmas special "Seasons Greetings" or the entrance of William Wallace Webster Waldecker (say that 3 times fast). Then of corse there is the 2 Prankster episodes that are alot of fun. We see the introduction of Intergang, a criminal empire that will be a thorn in Lois's and Superman's side on and off for the next 2 seasons. We also get to meet Tempest and HG Wells in season 2. While I didn't much like the creators interoperation of HG Wells, I did like the Tempest character. He makes several repeat performances in season 3 and 4. There are secrets, exposures, near misses and all of the things that made this series Great TV.
The DVD set is packed in much the same way as the first season. The annoying double overlay disks are here- and if you are like me you will be replacing them with the slimline cases so that your disks will not get scratched at the expense of the episode guide. There were several special features and interviews, both archival and new, for the fans and some even by the fans. Hope you enjoy the season as much as I did.
Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete Second Season Overview
LOIS & CLARK-COMPLETE 2ND SEASON (DVD/6 DISC/P&S-1
Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete Second Season Specifications
In Lois & Clark's first season, Clark Kent (Dean Cain) and Lois Lane (Teri Hatcher) joined the ranks of Sam and Diane and David and Maddie as TV's sparkiest couples whose devoted fans couldn't wait to see get together. Season 2 takes the star-crossed duo--and the series--to "the next step"; a long-awaited first kiss (the episode "Lucky Leon"), and declarations of love, culminating in a season-ending marriage proposal ("And the Answer Is..."). But getting to that deliriously romantic rain-soaked moment is all the fun. There are diabolical villains for Superman to foil, including a resurrected (and bald) Lex Luthor (John Shea reprising his first-season role in "The Phoenix"), a trash-TV host (Raquel Welch in "Top Copy), the vengeful Prankster (Bronson Pinchot in "The Prankster" and "Return of the Prankster"), and, incredibly, a time-traveled Al Capone (William Devane in "That Old Gang of Mine"). There is also a romantic rival for Clark's affections, Deputy D.A. Mayson Drake (Farrah Forke in "Church of Metropolis") and for Lois's (Jim Pirri as agent Daniel Scardino in "Resurrection").
Lois and Clark's second season not only features improved special effects, but a stellar roster of character actors: Roger Corman veteran Dick Miller as Lois's uncle and Peter Boyle as Intergang kingpin Bill Church in "Church of Metropolis"; a reunited Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford (The Jeffersons) in the Dean Cain-penned holiday episode, "Season's Greedings"; Bruce Campbell as Bill Church Jr. in "Individual Responsibility"; and Terry Kiser of Weekend at Bernie's fame as H.G. Wells in "Tempus Fugitive," the fan-favorite episode in which futuristic villain Tempus spills the beans to the "galactically stupid" Lois about Clark's secret identity. "That was worth the whole trip," he cackles, and for series fans, this benchmark (albeit fleeting) moment is probably worth the price of this super six-disc set. --Donald Liebenson

John Wayne: Screen Legend Collection (Reap the Wild Wind / Rooster Cogburn / The Hellfighters / The War Wagon / The Spoilers)
John Wayne: Screen Legend Collection (Reap the Wild Wind / Rooster Cogburn / The Hellfighters / The War Wagon / The Spoilers) Review

There's only one thing you need to know to understand how awesome John Wayne is: there are not one, but TWO different movies where he fights a giant octopus. One of them is in this set--Reap the Wild Wind (the other is Wake of the Red Witch, another great movie, however not included in this set). And one of my all time favorite movie fist-fights is in The Spoilers, between Wayne & Randolph Scott. The War Wagon is also a very underrated action western--Wayne & Kirk Douglas in a fun heist movie with plenty of action and fun dialogue. This is a great collection to have, and a great price!!!!
John Wayne: Screen Legend Collection (Reap the Wild Wind / Rooster Cogburn / The Hellfighters / The War Wagon / The Spoilers) Overview
John Wayne is one of the most popular and recognizable leading men ever to hit the silver screen. Five memorable films capture his unforgettable career in the John Wayne: Screen Legend Collection. Co-starring an impressive roster of talent including Katharine Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Marlene Dietrich and Randolph Scott, these films highlight an American icon who will always be remembered as a true screen legend. Reap the Wild Wind Cecil B. DeMille directs John Wayne and Ray Milland as two sailors battling pirates and competing for the affections of a southern belle (Paulette Goddard) in 1840s Key West. The Spoilers John Wayne joins Marlene Dietrich and Randolph Scott in an all-star adventure classic about gold and greed in an Alaskan boomtown during the 1890s. The War Wagon A rancher (John Wayne) recruits a brash gunslinger (Kirk Douglas) along with a raucous crew of misfits and readies them to pull off one of the most impossible heists of all time. Hellfighters A Texan demolition specialist (John Wayne) battles a perilous oil-well fire and hopes to reunite with his daughter and the wife who left him 20 years ago. Rooster Cogburn The saga of True Grit continues as John Wayne reprises his role as a Deputy Marshall who helps a missionary (Katharine Hepburn) bring justice to the Wild West.

Once a Thief
Once a Thief Review

The film starts out breezy enough. Likable trio of art thiefs mastermind elaborate heists in Paris. Afterwards they toast their laurels and have a jolly good time. You almost forget you're watching a John Woo film. Never fear. Guns start ablazing. Things blow up real good. Bad guys eat lead. It's soon revealed that Joey(Chow Yun-Fat), Jim (Leslie Cheung), and Cherie(Cherie Leung) were raised by an evil father figure who taught them petty thievery at the threat of a caning or starvation. The three grow up to be master criminals employed by evil Daddy's thriving Hong Kong crime syndicate. Heavy stuff but Woo is in top form here juggling thrills and levity along with the film's darker themes. The film also contains enough clever twists and surprises to satisfy the more discerning viewer. Yun-Fat is in top form here as the devil-may-care Joey. Yun-Fat commands the screen as both comedian and action star. This may not be the equivalent of Woo's masterworks, "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled", but it is an impressive entry in the directors canon.
Once a Thief Overview
Action film maestro John Woo (Mission: Impossible 2 Windtalkers) directs this lightning-paced caper of stolen art and broken hearts starring Chow Yun-Fat (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon). Over-the-top action sequences and mind-blowing gunplay get mixed with comedy and romance in this thrilling crowd-pleaser. Joe (Chow) Jim (Leslie Cheung Happy Together) and Cherie (Cherie Chung) have been partners in crime ever since their childhoods spent on the streets stealing to survive. Now world-class art thieves their relationships and lives are put on the line when they agree to one last mission: steal a multi-million dollar painting for a mysterious client who's bent on revenge.System Requirements:Running Time: 108 Min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE Rating: R UPC: 043396084254 Manufacturer No: 08425
Once a Thief Specifications
A romantic art-heist comedy, far lighter in tone than most of director John Woo's work, and in places much sillier. As kids, Chow Yun-fat, Cherie Chung, and Leslie Cheung (A Chinese Ghost Story) were starving street urchins together. They are rescued from the law and trained by a Fagin-like older crook, who transforms them into glossy international cat burglars. The best sections (especially the opening and closing heists) are as masterfully smooth as any action set pieces in the Woo canon. But the tone wavers alarmingly, from the sophisticated (Chow as Cary Grant) to the savage to the sentimental and back again, with a disastrous slapstick coda set in the states, in which the baby food hits the fan. The busy plotting distracts us from a strong theme: the struggle between good and bad father figures (the other is a stalwart cop played by Chu Kong) for the souls of these noble criminals. Not to be confused with the rather limp 1995 remake, produced by Woo for Canadian TV in 1995, with The X-Files' sinister Krycek, Nicholas Lea, surprisingly effective in the Chow part. --David Chute

The Mummy/Tremors
The Mummy/Tremors Review

Trying to escape their dead-end life in the desert town of Perfection, Nevada, Valentine McKee and Earl Bassett find themselves sidetracked when corpses mysteriously start piling up around them. When Val and Earl have a run-in with some creepy tentacled creatures that have made lunch out of a road crew, they retreat back to the town to spread the news. Although these monsters are not exactly intellectuals, their mental powers are still mind-boggling. Detecting a human hiding in a car, they dig under the vehicle, causing it to sink into the earth. Val and Earl get help from several townspeople. With the help of Rhonda, Val and Earl kill one of the monsters. But there are three of them left, and they are each about 30 feet long. Walter starts calling the monsters graboids. When the survivors think they have outwitted the graboids by taking refuge atop the roofs of buildings, the graboids merely destroy the buildings' foundations, killing two people. The graboids are quick learners when it comes to stalking their prey, and the humans must continually be on their toes if they are to stay alive while they try to find a way to defeat the graboids. "Tremors" succeeds in what it sets out to be, an exciting and wonderfully entertaining horror thriller. A lot of fun and highly recommended.
The Mummy/Tremors Overview
Who would have guessed that this clever, fast-paced creature feature from 1990 would become a beloved miniclassic worthy of its own Collector's Edition DVD? Tremors didn't actually break any new ground (even though its tunneling worm monsters certainly did), but it revved up the classic monster-movie formulas of the 1950s with such energetic enthusiasm and humor that it made everything old seem new again. It's also got a cast full of enjoyable actors who clearly had a lot of fun making the film, and director Ron Underwood strikes just the right balance of comedy and terror as a band of small-town rednecks battles a lot of really nasty-looking giant worms. The special effects are great, the one-liners fly fast and furious between heroes Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward (and yes, that's country star Reba McEntire packin' awesome firepower), and it's all done with the kind of flair one rarely associates with goofy monster flicks like this. Followed by a direct-to-video sequel (Tremors: Aftershocks), this horror thriller was given the deluxe treatment for its DVD release. Bonus features include an original "making-of" documentary, previously unseen video showing the creation of the worm-creatures, outtakes from the film, the original ending not shown in theaters, theatrical trailers, and a gallery of production photographs. If you're a fan, consider this a must-have disc! --Jeff Shannon

Blue Streak
Blue Streak Review

This is a very funny movie with an awesome plot! I didn't realize it's already been 10 years since it was made. Martin Lawrence stars as a jewel theif named Miles Logan who tries to steal a million diamond in Los Angeles. When he is double-crossed by his partner, he hides the diamond in a building that's being constructed. After spending two years in jail, Miles returns and sees that the building is now a police station. He goes undercover as a Detective named Malone. Miles helps and befriends some cops. Miles' partner, Deacon is back and tries to get the diamond back too. I highly recommend BLUE STREAK!!!
p.s. 1 year ago today, I graduated!
Blue Streak Overview
BLUE STREAK (DVD/P&S/WS 1.85/DD 5.1/WNG-SUB)
Blue Streak Specifications
Martin Lawrence can certainly talk a blue streak (witness his concert film, You So Crazy), but he tones it down to PG-13 for this by-the-book action comedy. Lawrence stars as Logan, a bank robber and jewel thief (nice role model we're supposed to cheer for) who, just before he is arrested, manages to stash the million diamond he has just heisted at a construction site. When he is released from prison two years later, he returns to the scene of the crime only to find that the completed building houses a police station. To get inside and retrieve the precious gem he secures a fake ID and passes himself off as LAPD's newest, and most unorthodox, detective. As he demonstrated on his TV series, Lawrence has a knack for characterization second to Eddie Murphy. But he's no Beverly Hills Cop. Indulgent sequences where Martin has seemingly been given free reign to ad-lib are the film's weakest. Early on, Logan cases the police station outlandishly disguised as a snaggle-toothed, Geri-curled pizza deliveryman. You'd think the last thing his character would want to do is call attention to himself. Lawrence is at his best in the scenes in which, thanks to all those years of breaking and entering, his formerly lawless character proves to be a natural at cracking burglary cases. Logan is paired with the requisite white partner, Carlson (Luke Wilson), a buttoned-up rookie. Departing from the Lethal Weapon, buddy-movie playbook, they are not antagonists; theirs is more a teacher-mentor relationship. "Don't we need a warrant to do that?" Carlson asks Logan at one point. "We don't even need a key," Logan responds, picking a lock. There is little in Blue that is remotely fresh, but Lawrence fans, who watched him play it straight opposite Murphy in Life, will relish the opportunity to see him get down with his bad self. --Donald Liebenson

Jackie Chan's Who Am I?
Jackie Chan's Who Am I? Review

Probably the last of Chan's great movies, at least in terms of fights and stunts. Certainly not in plot: A highly skilled soldier with amnesia? Chan traveling with two female companions? Hmm... haven't seen either of those before! Honestly it doesn't really matter. This is still Chan doing what Chan does best. Plus it's always interesting to see a Hong Kong production of an English-language film that takes place in Europe and Africa. That alone makes it worth a view.
Chan plays a soldier who wakes up in Namibia with no memory of who he is or how he got there. After making some new friends he travels to Johannesburg where he asks the local authorities for help. Some government goons then show up and take him into custody. He escapes and journeys to the Netherlands in his continuous pursuit of the truth and ends up facing intrigue, betrayal, and more goons.
If you read the back of the case you'd think this was a serious film. It does take a little while before the comedy kicks in but it's quite frequent once it does. Fortunately a lot of the humor is stunt-based and there are some good moments. Unfortunately there aren't very many fights... but the quality of the ones here are top notch. From fighting while handcuffed to fighting while wearing wooden shoes to an awesome rooftop finale against two opponents who are timing one another to see who can knock Chan down the fastest!
The Columbia Tri Star DVD has flipside widescreen or fullscreen picture with very good quality. English language with a French dub and English or French subtitles. Sorry, no special features. The Hong Kong version contains several more minutes of footage and supposedly fills in a couple of the gaps. It would be cool to see this in its entirety but this version should satisfy most Chan fans for the majority of its 108 minutes.

Jackie Chan's Who Am I? Overview
In his most thrilling and stunt-packed adventure yet superstar jackie chan plays a lone commando struggling to regain his memory and stop an international espionage ring before they stop him dead. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 03/22/2005 Starring: Jackie Chan Run time: 108 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Jackie Chan/benny Chan
Jackie Chan's Who Am I? Specifications
Shot in English and budgeted higher than any of his previous Asian features, Jackie Chan's last film under his Hong Kong contract is an action-packed globe-trotting adventure shot with the American audience in mind. The spies and secret agent-laden plot is packed with car chases, explosions, gunfire aplenty, and of course Jackie's own brand of gymnastic martial arts. But the flood of his older films between his hits Rumble in the Bronx and Rush Hour had sated American viewers and Who Am I? wound up being sold directly to cable. It's our loss, for this mix of goofy slapstick and jaw-dropping action is his most impressive film since Drunken Master II. Playing a special forces agent (named, naturally, Jackie) struck with amnesia and adopted by an African bush tribe following a failed assassination attempt, he embarks on a quest to discover his true identity while armies of killers pour after him. After an explosive opening, the story gets momentarily bogged down in the kind of mugging humor that leaves most American audiences scratching their heads, but once Jackie kicks into gear the film is a high-speed action flurry that culminates in a furious battle atop a Rotterdam skyscraper. Jackie is at his most charmingly naive (he berates the villains, pleading "Why do you want to destroy when you can make things better?") and athletically impressive: the marvelous stunts--including a flight down the side of the skyscraper--and fight choreography make Rush Hour look like a Sunday drive. --Sean Axmaker

Tales From the Hood
Tales From the Hood Review

When three drug dealers are called to a funeral parlor to collect a stash of drugs, they are greeted by the creepy, eccentric Mr. Simms , who proceeds to tell them four moralistic tales of terror regarding the deceased who lie in his parlor. The first tale concerns a man murdered by crooked police officers and the officer who begins hearing his voice from beyond the grave to avenge his death. The second story deals with a boy named Walter, the monster who torments him, and the teacher who realizes that something is wrong. The third story deals with a white supremacist running for governor, who lives in an old house with a history of racial violence and who refuses to heed the warnings of the supernatural presence that occupies it. Finally, the fourth story deals with a career criminal who agrees to undergo a horrific behavioral modification program overseen by a government-employed scientist. The stories each become gradually scarier as Mr. Simms go on and as the drug dealers begin to lose their patience, until they are ultimately given what they have come for, and find that there is something much more evil to the funeral home than they ever realized. "Tales from the Hood" is a very good movie. Watch this movie, not expecting a horror movie, but a very important social studies lesson.
Tales From the Hood Overview
Revenge/horror motif played out again and again and again, but this time with racial implications. Three drug-dealing thugs look for a stash in a funeral parlor and get the grand tour from Mr. Simms, the truly creepy mortician. As they pass the open caskets, Simms relates gruesome stories about the occupants' deaths to the increasingly restless young men. Each one of them falls to the vengeance of the supernatural theme, and it gets truly old. Nothing original is introduced, except that most of the stories take place in an urban setting. Produced by Spike Lee in an attempt to prove that bad horror doesn't discriminate, either. --Keith Simanton

Pootie Tang
Pootie Tang Review

This movie is hilarious. Pootie Tang is just too cool for words so he makes them up based on how smooth they sound. But everyone understands him and the audience does too, which can lead to an even longer discussion about the nature of communication. But that's getting a little theoretical for such a hilarious comedy. The features are non-existent and sometimes this movie seems like a Saturday Night Live sketch that they just didn't spend long enough time with the script to make it classic. Like the characters are not very developed and the plot is simplistic. And I think this was a sketch on the Chris Rock show originally. But for all that, it's a terrific movie, definitely good for many, many laughs. And you get to learn a new language. So, Kapa-Chow.
Pootie Tang Overview
The adventures of Pootie Tang, an inner city crime fighter who speaks a language that nobody understands.
Genre: Feature Film Urban Comedy
Rating: PG13
Release Date: 2-MAY-2006
Media Type: DVD
Pootie Tang Specifications
Pootie Tang pushes blaxploitation to the point of surrealism. The title character--who first appeared on The Chris Rock Show--speaks a kind of slang on steroids, an incomprehensible stream of nonsense syllables that nonetheless makes him irresistible to women and a threat to evildoers everywhere. Pootie is part movie star, part superhero, righting wrongs with the slap of his daddy's belt. But when an evil corporation uses a super-ho named Ireenie (Jennifer Coolidge from Best in Show and Legally Blonde) to steal this magic belt, Pootie must find himself again. In the title role, Lance Crouther glides through the movie like Isaac Hayes's skinny younger brother, while Chris Rock lends his trademark bark to multiple roles, including Pootie's father. Crazed editing and a great soundtrack give Pootie Tang a little extra oomph. A bizarre comedy, likely to develop a cult following. Cameos by Missy Elliot and Bob Costas. --Bret Fetzer

Deadly Game
Deadly Game Review

"Deadly Game", also know as "Hide and Seek" and "Catch Me If You Can", is about a 12 year old boy, Nathan Thomas (listed in the credits simply as "kid"), who witnesses a gangland murder and is taken into protective custody by down-and-out police detective Norm (Tim Matheson). But street-smart and mischievous Nathan proves too much for Norm as he makes this a game of hide and seek. It soon turns out to be a deadly game of cat-and-mouse phone-tag as Nathan retrieves a bag of cash that was hidden by the murdered gangster before he got rubbed out. While Nathan lives high on the hog, Norm tries to find Nathan and protect him. Because the gangsters want to find the kid, too. They want their money back - and they want to eliminate the witness to their dirty deeds. Families can enjoy this movie together. The movie is fun and Ryan DeBoer makes it all worth watching. I recommend it!
Deadly Game Overview
After running away from home, 12-year-old Nathan is wanted by the cops. After stealing the mob's loot, he's wanted by the crooks. With both sides of the law on his tail and a fortune in cash in his pockets, Nathan is doing everything but laying low. He's living it up - with a lavish hotel suite and a megabucks shopping spree. Soon, even this streetsmart kid knows that his game of hide-and-seek has become all too serious. So now he's teaming up with police to get these ruthless criminals before they can get him. From runaway to fugitive to hero, Nathan is having the adventure of a lifetime...in a movie that shows how outrageous things can get when crime fighting becomes child's play.

Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home
Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home Review

Great movie! I loved that the cast of Star Trek TOS had to go to 80's America. Also the jokes and gags are hilarious, like when Chekov was talking to the officer(mind you it's the mid 80's and he's russian) asking "May you please tell me where the Nuclear WESSELLS are in Alameda", or when Kirk tells Gillian that Spock had a little to much LDS.
Though most "Trekkies" probably don't like it because there's not enough fighting or space action, this is my ABSOLUTE favorite Star Trek film, and one of my 5 favorite films of all time.
Now about the VHS tape I have, the '91 directors edition, it's fair though the random commercial about renting videos was a bit random(the dog rents a movie and it's normal O_o). The introduction interview with Mr. Nimoy was okay, but a bit bland at most. The Widescreen is GREAT much better than full screen, which was more popular in it's time.
In the all in all I'd recommend the Movie to most people who like Star Trek and Comedies. Though the Director's edition Widescreen VHS is more a collector's item, the special edition DVD would be more "Logical" to purchase.

Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home Specifications
Widely considered the best movie in the "classic Trek" series of feature films, Star Trek IV returns to one of the favorite themes of the original TV series--time travel--to bring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov from the 23rd century to present-day San Francisco. In their own time, the Starfleet heroes encounter an alien probe emitting a mysterious message--a message delivered in the song of the now-extinct Earth species of humpback whales. Failure to respond to the probe will result in Earth's destruction, so Kirk and company time-travel to 20th-century Earth--in their captured Klingon starship--to transport a humpback whale to the future in an effort to peacefully communicate with the alien probe. The plot sounds somewhat absurd in description, but as executed by returning director Leonard Nimoy, this turned out to be a crowd-pleasing adventure, filled with humor and lively interaction among the favorite Star Trek characters. Catherine Hicks (from TV's 7th Heaven) plays the 20th-century whale expert who is finally convinced of Kirk's and Spock's benevolent intentions. With ample comedy taken from the clash of future heroes with 20th-century urban realities, Star Trek IV was a box-office smash, satisfying mainstream audiences and hardcore Trek fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

John Tucker Must Die
John Tucker Must Die Review

this is a satisfying teenager/ chickflick movie. It has a funny plot, alot of funny unexpected scenes an is above average when it comes to the huge amount of teen movies being made. I have never seen Jesse Metcalfe as a particularly good actor, but he plays his role as the popular, good looking, jerky, "player" in a good, convincing way. All four girls are enjoyable to watch. Looking aside from the fact that they all look like 25 years olds who could be models when they are actually playing high school kids, they play there parts well. Brittany Snows character Kate is very likable, and her nervous, real, genuine "nice girl" quality is endearing to all viewers. Sophia Bush and Arielle Kebbel have many funny moments and shines in the movie as well.
The movie is as previously mentioned above average in its genre, and I would absolutely recommend watching this instead of mean girls or bring it on.
The movie does not have the biggest message to give the audience, but serves the purpose well if you want a funny chickflick to watch with your girlfriends at a sleepover.
John Tucker Must Die Overview
Hollywood's hottest young hunk, Jesse Metcalfe (TV's Desperate Housewives), delivers big laughs on campus in this "hot, hilarious film!'" (NBC-TV, Miami) When three gorgeous gals discover they've all been duped by smooth-talking stud John Tucker (Metcalfe), they hatch a devious revenge scheme to turn the tables on him. Now Tucker is going to have to change his ways...or the school jock will soon become the class joke!
Can the tantalizing teen trio turn this "serial dater" into a one-woman man? Find out in the hit movie that proves revenge isn't just sweet, it's hysterically funny.
John Tucker Must Die Specifications
An unlikely sisterhood plots a girl-powered revenge in John Tucker Must Die. When the class-overachiever (Arielle Kebbel, Aquamarine), the head cheerleader (Ashanti, Coach Carter), and the vegan alterna-girl (Sophia Bush, One Tree Hill) discover they're all dating the same guy--namely, star basketball player John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe, Desperate Housewives)--they recruit a bashful new girl named Kate (Brittany Snow, The Pacifier) to become the ideal girl to break Tucker's heart. But as Kate uses the gang's combined wiles to lure Tucker, his interest gives her a social standing she's never had before...an intoxicating experience that may cost her a chance at honest love with another boy. John Tucker Must Die contrasts male and female behavior to cunning comic effect. The portrait of high school life is typically absurd, but the engaging cast, sprightly plot, and crisp dialogue will draw you in. It's a testament to the smooth guiding hand of director Betty Thomas (The Brady Bunch Movie, Private Parts) that ex-Playmate Jenny McCarthy's performance can genuinely be called understated. One of 2006's best teen comedies. --Bret Fetzer

Shaolin Soccer
Shaolin Soccer Review

Before you watch this movie, here are two things you'll need:
1) A Sense of humor. We know the cliché, "Everybody's a comedian", but if you're someone who doesn't feel like humor surrounds you every where you go every day, you most like don't have the sense of humor required to appreciate the humor of this flick.
B) The ability to read. DO NOT watch the U.S. version. It really doesn't do the movie justice. The translation of the subtitles aren't great, but it is a waaay better movie.
Got those two checked? Then enjoy the movie with a loved one or a kidnapping victim (for you serial killers out there).
Shaolin Soccer Overview
With tons of action, eye-popping special effects, and nonstop laughs, here's a hilarious martial arts comedy about a team of misfits who take their best shot at winning a championship! Sing is a skilled Shaolin kung fu devotee whose amazing "leg of steel" catches the eye of a soccer coach! Using an unlikely mix of martial arts and newfound soccer skills, it seems an unbeatable combination ... until they must face the dreaded Team Evil in the ultimate battle for the title!
Shaolin Soccer Specifications
Computer generated special effects have seldom been so giddy as in Shaolin Soccer, a gleeful fusion of kung fu and a classic Bad News Bears sports story. A former soccer star--whose "golden leg" was broken by a hired mob--assembles a team of former students of Shaolin martial arts, whose assorted skills (indicated by their nicknames, like Mighty Steel Leg and Iron Head) lend themselves to the swift interplay of the world's most popular game. Along the way, the team's leader (Hong Kong comic superstar Stephen Chow) meets a sticky bun baker (Vicki Zhao) whose kung fu is the equal of any of his teammates. Shaolin Soccer is supremely silly--in the final match, their opponents are called Team Evil--but that's part of the fun. American movies rarely achieve this perfect balance of the absurd and the sincere. A delight. --Bret Fetzer

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen [Region 2]
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen [Region 2] Review

A thrilling, lively Classical-era fanfare heralds the Columbia logo and signals high adventure and romance, as we open in "the late 18th Century", the "Age of Reason", on a "Wednesday." Already we know that we are in the universe of the man behind Brazil, Terry Gilliam as the expectation caused by the opening chords is quickly subverted by the grim wartime feeling of a starving city under siege by the Turks. Even death itself makes an early appearance, a black winged skeletal angel that will continue to show up throughout the film and which seems to presage an ominous and early end indeed for the characters we meet in the beginning. Young Sally is the daughter of a traveling actor (and head of his theatrical troupe) who plays the magical Baron Munchausen, a fabulous hero famed for his tall tales revolving around such feats as a trip to the moon and the theft of a sultan's treasure. The pathetic troupe puts on its poor mockery of theater in a disintegrating, cavernous building as the town's leader, the Right Ordinary Horatio Jackson (note that title), only to be upstaged by the "real" Baron (John Neville), a drunken and crazy old man - with a real and sharp sword - who proceeds to tell the story of how the town got into this mess....
Gilliam's film is the summation of all of his work as director up until this point, blending the childhood wonder of Time Bandits, the satire on bureaucracy and the feeling for the importance of imagination in the face of hopeless "rationality" of "Brazil", the broad humor of Monty Python and the references to Alice in Wonderland and medieval romance and tall tales of "Jabberwocky". Most of the film charts in a relatively linear way the adventures of the (real) Baron and Sally as they fly off in a balloon made of ladies' underwear in search of Munchausen's four fabulous servants - all of whom we have glimpsed in the opening scene, denying that they are anything but actors. Is the Baron crazy? Is the child Sally the only one who believes him, or in fact the only one who can experience his exploits, or save him from death? The film explores these and many other questions of storytelling and belief and the Baron grows more youthful with success, ages with failure -- as his friends seem at first not to recognize him, and then to be too old and feeble to help him. The baron himself loses faith at times, and only Sally is there to prop him up. At the end, a mind-boggling mixture of battles, triumph, death and funeral, resurrection and above all the Story of The Way It Should End all fuse into one of the most joyous and potent conclusions in film.
The director draws on a wonderful array of sources for this film, which is certainly postmodern in the lightest yet most serious and beautiful sense - there are nods to "Alice in Wonderland", "The Wizard of Oz", "Pinocchio", Renaissance painting, "Cyrano de Bergerac" and the 1940 "Thief of Bagdad" among countless others, but the film never seems derivative or obvious; always it is focused on the pure joy of the tale and the strength and power of myth-making in the face of the tedium and joylessness represented by the unscrupulous and ultimately murderous Jackson - played with vicious glee by Jonathan Pryce in an ironic reversal of his role in Gilliam's previous film, "Brazil".
The cast is uniformly fine -- some may be irritated by Sarah Polley's admittedly shrill Sally though it seemed an appropriate (and necessary) characterization to me -- with standouts being Pryce, Eric Idle as the fleet-footed but somewhat dimwitted Berthold, and John Neville as the Baron in one of the most unjustly slighted performances from a banner year for film. Giuseppe Rotunno's photography makes much more of an impact on the big screen for sure but it is certainly beautiful enough (particularly in the outdoors/sky sequences) even on the DVD; and Michael Kamen's score is one of my all-time favorites and possibly the best work in his film career. The dialog may strike some as odd, in its mixture of late-20th-century idioms (particularly when voiced by the King of the Moon, Robin Williams) and the more carefully "authentic" 200-year-old jargon of characters like Jackson -- but like most elements of the film, this is carefully designed to throw us off and keep our sense of what is real and not always in doubt.
This is a film I've seen over and over - it scored a big impression when I saw it new, alas not on very many people - and it grows greater with each re-watch. Gilliam really manages here to articulate a very profound statement about how we are losing out way, about how the bottom line and the "rational" way of winning a war - or making a film - may in fact be heartless, cold, and ultimately more dead than the Baron seems to be just before the triumphant finish of the film. As much as I love "Brazil, this is easily my favorite Terry Gilliam film, and in its failure ultimately a signal for a new and less potent (though still interesting) direction in his work. A triumph then, and a tragedy - the film is the career, the career is the film.
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen [Region 2] Overview
Monty Python's Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) directs this wild, wild version of the stories of Baron Munchausen, pushing the limits of 1989 special effects technology to bring us such sights as a horse divided in half and running around in two parts, and a giant Robin Williams with his head flying off his shoulders. Basically, this is a treat for Gilliam fans, as the sustaining idea of the film runs out of steam, and manic energy alone keeps the momentum going. Casual viewers might find it tedious after awhile. There are nice parts for fellow Python Eric Idle, as well as Sting, Alison Steadman, and Uma Thurman as a dazzlingly beautiful Venus on a half-shell. Gilliam had greater artistic and commercial success with Brazil, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys. --Tom Keogh

D. Gray-Man: Season One, Part Two
D. Gray-Man: Season One, Part Two Review

D. Gray Man has a very interesting concept. Allen Walker serves the Black Order and along with other exorcists must defeat the Millennium Earl and his minions the Akuma. More of the Clan of Noah, those that serve the Earl are introduced.
D. Gray Man began as a manga series in 2004, and currently in Japan the manga has reached double digits with volume 18 released a month ago. The series, very faithfull to the original story, tends to incorporate material from the novels called D. Gray Man Reverse. As the story continues, the characters are more "fleshed out," given more backgrounds than were in the orginal material. The first and second season explore some elements that were not covered in the original manga, but the last 2 seasons really take the anime to a new level, faithfully recreating the story in animated format. Some characters are even introduced earlier in the story and also get more screen time.
Since I am a fan of this series, I must say that I rather enjoyed it, but I had some small problems with some of the elements. The voice acting of the English cast kind of put me off, but that is quickly dispelled as one becomes more accustomed to it. The Clan of Noah are also a stange gray tone that seems too dark, they just do not look quite right, but at this point I am just nit-picking.
The entire series goes to episode 103, roughly covering almost up to the end of volume 16. I enjoyed the fact that many elements present in the later manga stories was also incorporated, not just editing them out like some anime adaptions do. All in all, I do recommend this series and hope that as more chapters of the manga come out, that the story may pick up where it leaves off and continue into a fifth season. Very Enjoyable

The Eagle
The Eagle Review

This movie's main attraction is Valentino playing a Russian nobleman, from an aesthetic perspective, just watching him wearing a Russian hat studed with the Imperial Eagle and with a cape to match, is enough to justify seeing the film.
He is in love with Mascha, (played by Vilma Banky) the daughter of his worst enemy, Kyrilla Troekouroff ( James Marcus) who is just an awful character as a tyrannical feudal lord, that enjoys among other things tasteless jokes, like sending his guests down to the cellar to be scared out of their wits by a chained bear.
The costumes by Adrian are totally anachronistic. No Russian nobleman was dressing like a medieval boyar by the time of Catherine II, here played by Louise Dresser who does look very much like the aging empress, as depicted in her portraits, but acts more like a capricious society matron with delirium of grandeur when Valentino turns her down. Her childish mannerisms and reactions are delights in the art of hamming up.
Mascha at one point is very casually dressed in the 1920's fashion while out on a carriage ride, with a similarly attired chaperone, although she can also wear a pearl-studed huge concoction on her head while having dinner, that is inspired on the Russian "kokoschnik" headgear, but this Hollywood version should never have been worn a minute before midnight, at the earliest.
At times Valentino's clothes jump ahead a generation or two from the story and is very nicely attired in 19th Century garb, so tight that I wonder how he could breathe or sit down, on the upside one can actually appreciate why his physique's perfection, and reputation as a lover, was not exclusive to the handsome face. But whether in Russian costume or not he is superb as a dashing hero in this adventure story, very similar to Zorro, (black mask included) which actually is pretty close to the original "Dubrovsky" by Pushkin. It is also hard to believe while watching the film where Valentino is swashbuckling away that he would be dead in the next year.
Vilma Banky, a Hungarian Beauty that was nicknamed "The Hungarian Rhapsody" when she came to America was a big star in the mid-twenties. She had a face perfect for the silent screen and an appetite for male attention that must have been as great as her delight in dressing with chiffon. Her chemistry with Valentino is evident from the start, which was to win her the role for his next and last movie, "Son of the Sheik" (1926). They have a charming, humorous way of communicating and their expressions truly do not need any dialogue for translation.
Apparently this movie was in better condition in another laser disc copy. I have never seen it, and though this version would benefit from a good restoration, it is still good enough to watch, which is strongly recommended as it is a great showcase of the charm, allure and charisma that made Valentino an immortal star of the early cinema.
The Eagle Overview
Set in the Imperial Court of 18th-century Russia, "The Eagle" is a dashing and romantic adventure in which Rudolph Valentino gives what many consider to be his finest screen performance. Here is a role tailor-made for the legendary Valentino--that of Vladimir, the handsome young Cossack guardsman who is banished after rejecting the amorous advances of Catherine the Great (stunningly portrayed by Louise Dresser) and becomes the "Black Eagle," a Russian Robin Hood dedicated to robbing the rich and giving to the down-trodden peasants.

Dragon Ball Z - Cooler's Revenge - Feature (Uncut)
Dragon Ball Z - Cooler's Revenge - Feature (Uncut) Review

Frieza, in all his foolishness, let the young Goku escape in a Saiyan spacepod during his battle with Bardock. Looking from afar was his brother, Cooler, who let the Saiyan child live stating that he would be Frieza's eventual downfall. He couldn't have been more correct...
Now that the tyrant Frieza has finally fallen, Cooler has arrived on Earth looking for Goku in order to seek revenge. Goku is not able to stand up to Cooler's initial assault, so now it's up to Gohan and all his friends to protect him until he can recover and summon the Super Saiyan strength he needs to finally defeat Cooler.
I thought this was a great Dragonball Z movie, and one of the best ones overall. Goku is injured early on in the film, which takes much of the focus off of him and places it instead on his son, Gohan, and his comrades. This gives the story an opportunity to make use of the supporting cast to a much greater extent, allowing them to become much more than just weaklings that get tossed aside in the early stages of a fight. There is also much more depth to Cooler's character than there is to the villains that came before him in previous movies. An example of this is illustrated in a scene where he admits he doesn't care much for Frieza and that he deserved what he got, but still has an obligation to try and avenge his death. The FUNimation dub is done more decently this time around than it was in Lord Slug, though the soundtrack still needs work and the French accent portrayed by Sauzer's character is quite exaggerated and over the top.
If you're a Dragonball Z fan at all, then you should buy/watch this movie. Keep in mind when viewing it though, that it does conflict with what happens in the series. For example, Goku should not be on Earth until Trunks arrives and kills Frieza and King Cold, so it's not possible that he would be waiting there when Cooler shows up. Aside from continuity issues, it's a great standalone movie and shouldn't be missed!

Dragon Ball Z - Cooler's Revenge - Feature (Uncut) Overview

Dragon Ball Z - Cooler's Revenge - Feature (Uncut) Specifications
Originally released in 1991, the fifth Dragon Ball Z feature (a.k.a. Tobikkiri no Saikyou tai Saikyou--"Fantastic Ultimate Strength vs. Ultimate Strength") involves the characters from the TV episodes, but in an unrelated continuity. Goku and Gohan set off on a camping trip with Krillin and Oolong, but their outing turns into a battle royal when they're attacked by the minions of Cooler, Frieza's older brother. Piccolo appears as a Nameck ex machina to aid Gohan, but the centerpiece of the film is the battle between Goku in his Super-Saiyan form and Cooler, who looks like a purple iguana in a football uniform. The various Dragon Ball properties balance slapstick and fantastic action; Cooler's Revenge offers lots of action, and a rock soundtrack, but little comedy. Unrated: Suitable for ages 8 and up; contains cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon
