A message from John Walsh: I'm the host of a television show that I wish wasn't needed. But it is. Thankfully, 38 missing children have been recovered by our work at "America's Most Wanted." In 1981, the lives of my wife Reve and I were changed forever. Our beautiful son Adam was abducted from a mall in a nice area of South Florida. Sadly, two weeks into the biggest search for a child ever in Florida, our son was found murdered. In my quest to find justice and fight back for victims, I lobbied Congress to change the laws and to change how police search for missing children. I'm proud to say that the movement I started is still going strong. There's a national organization dedicated to helping children (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) and now this country and its media are beginning to understand that our children need to be informed about how to stay safe. In 1981 not much was known about child abduction and exploitation. Parents knew very little and, tragically, children knew even less. Today we're proud of the awareness that children have about the dangers that face them. Children see images everywhere of kidnappings and exploitation. We only need to think about what we've seen in the past year--pedophiles in the clergy, Internet predators, and others who are in positions to take advantage of children's trust in them--to know that kids are still being victimized at an alarming rate. I hope that's about to change. As a crime fighter and host of a popular TV program that has saved lives, I'm proud to be teaming up with a woman who knows how to teach children. Kids want to know what to do, and parents need to be prepared. Like me, Julie Clark is a parent who cares. She has a proven track record of teaching kids. Her passion and experience make this series of safety videos for children something that parents and kids will want to watch. Back when the BBC broadcast The Blue Planet, this material was often just as interesting as the main feature itself, and the same is true here. After taking on insects for Microcosmos and birds for Winged Migration, French filmmaker Jacques Perrin segues to sea creatures for Oceans. Codirected by Jacques Cluzaud, Disneynature's follow-up to Earth presents useful information but concentrates more on awe-inspiring imagery than scene-setting text. As narrator Pierce Brosnan states, "The Ocean is alive," and the crew spent four years crossing the globe to capture its most intriguing sights, from the salt-encrusted marine iguanas of the Galápagos Islands to the silky fur seals of South Africa. In other sequences, horseshoe crabs scuttle across the sand, jellyfish pulsate through the deep, and sardines sparkle as the sun catches their scales. Some creatures, like the blanket octopus, look more like abstract paintings than anything one might find on land. The cycle of life plays out as newborn green turtles make the treacherous trek from sand to sea and hermit crabs unwittingly enter the cleverly camouflaged lair of the mantis shrimp. Even viewers who normally prefer Hollywood blockbusters may find the smooth moves of the stonefish as transfixing as those of the biggest action-movie star. As with the Oscar-winning documentary March of the Penguins, however, Oceans targets kids as much as adults, unlike The Cove or Sharkwater, which feature material of a more graphic and political nature. Perrin and Cluzaud clearly aim to discourage pollution and encourage conservation, but their movie mostly serves as a treat for the eyes and ears (with the exception of the annoying Joe Jonas song that plays over the end credits). --Kathleen C. It's easy to see why executive producers Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine of the rude and rowdy show Jackass took interest in this ridiculously tragicomic reality drama, The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia. Riffing off of the original and rare documentary "Dancing Outlaw," about tap dancer Jesco White and his dancing dad, director Julien Nitzberg headed down to the coal-mining heart of West Virginia to further exploit this drug-addled family for some film footage that's fairly unbelievable. Launching right into some current family drama between Sue Bob's son, Brandon, having landed in prison after shooting his uncle, among others, this documentary then goes back to trace hooligan behavior to the originators of the family, dancer and coal miner D. Ray and his tough-cookie wife Bertie Mae. Daughters and cousins Sue Bob, Mousie, and Kirk dominate the film, snorting coke in trashy bar bathroom stalls and getting tanked in cars while driving around with less-than-savory boyfriends and ex-husbands. Occasionally, interviews with the town's district attorney provide some background information on this infamous regional family. One of the main plot thrusts here surrounds Kirk and her confiscated newborn, which prompts her to attend rehab while her other son, Tylor, rooms temporarily with his father. Will she get clean and sober, and will she get her baby back? One waits on tenterhooks to find out. Another subplot entails Grandma Mamie's antics as bad influence on the new generation of kids ushered into this mess. This family's action is so trashy, it's a wonder they all seem so content to be filmed. But then again, they're outlaws; throughout the film they own that title with what little pride they have. By the time the viewer is escorted to the family graveyard by the conflicted son of D. Ray, Jesco, to see D. Ray's defaced tombstone, one can imagine why D. Ray's name was scratched off the rock. For his kids to be this confused, he must have been a maniac. One comes away laughing and cringing simultaneously, and hoping that some Whites in addition to Poney, the cousin who fled with his clan to Minnesota, will escape the family for a wider, more optimistic view of life. While this film sounds like it would be a bad influence on kids, it actually may have a "scared straight" effect. The substance abuse is so raw, it's hard to imagine not taking this as warning. --Trinie Dalton
