Tango and Cash (Keepcase)
Tango and Cash (Keepcase) Review

Before I picked this up on Blu Ray, I searched for reviews but couldn't find any. I decided to blind buy it from Amazon, because of the great deal offered. Well, sure enough, it doesn't disappoint: the picture quality is very, very good - in direct comparison to the DVD, it blows it out of the park! Contours are sharp and precise, colors are rich and vivid; it is as big an improvement over the DVD as the DVD was over VHS! I couldn't believe how bad the DVD looks (I guess it's been a while since I watched it...), with colors all washed out and the screen flattened. I'm no pro at this, but trust me: it does look great on Blu Ray! The only downside is there are no extras except the trailer. Since we didn't even get a Special Edition on DVD, chances for one on Blu ray are slim at best. I didn't see this movie in the theater, but thanks to the Blu Ray it looks like it's unfolding right before me.
Tango and Cash (Keepcase) Overview
Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/08/2009
Tango and Cash (Keepcase) Specifications
Another action flick from an unlikely source (wildly inconsistent Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky), buddy movie Tango & Cash teams Sly Stallone and Kurt Russell as bullet-dodging cops who get on each others' nerves while uniting against a slimy French drug kingpin (Jack Palance). Violent, profane, and packed with implausibilities, this is one of those big-budget, stunt-laden affairs that gets by on the charisma of its stars, and they almost pull it off. Tango & Cash was Stallone's first attempt to share the spotlight with another hero, and he's casually laid-back in his change-of-pace role (well, OK, it's not that change-of-pace), while Russell is equally enjoyable as Sly's well-coifed sidekick. Ridiculous all the way, this one is entertaining if only as a virtual catalog of action-movie clichés.--Jeff Shannon

Dance of the Drunken Mantis
Dance of the Drunken Mantis Review

I thought that this movie was slightly better. If Jackie or some other good acrobat could have played the role of Foggy in this movie it definitely would have gotten 5 stars.
WARNING:the version I have is the Blackbelt theater version and it also comes with From China With Death, which really sucked. The picture quality on these movies is truly some of the worst that I have ever seen. It is watchable if you are a fan of EVERYBODY in this movie, Rubber Legs CAN'T be seen if there is a white backround.
Dance of the Drunken Mantis Overview
Some people call this the proper sequel to Drunken Master. From Yuen Woo Ping, the action director of The Matrix films and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, this film combines the motions of both the deadly drunken manti and drunken boxing fighting styles and comedy! Trouble begins when Rubber Legs (Hwang Jang Lee), the leader of the south school of Drunken Boxing, has it in for Sam The Seed (Simon Yuen), the leader of the rival north School.

3000 Miles to Graceland [Region 2]
3000 Miles to Graceland [Region 2] Review
Normally I do not watch anything this violent. Normally I avoid any movie with Kevin Costner in it. The first because I just do not care to see violence. I once got talked into going to the drive-in to see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I spent the whole evening with the sun visor down on the passenger side of the car, trying the best I could to not listen. The second because normally with Kevin Costner it is just Kevin Costner walking through a role. I never seem to accept him as whatever character he is playing.
We were flipping through the channels on cable one night and came across this movie about half way through. I got hooked into watching it. Having not seen the beginning I went back another night to catch that part. I ended up watching the whole movie.
Basic story plot is about a band of Elvis impersonators that rob a casino. They then end up double crossing each other. That was just about a given.
Cybil Waingrow (Courtney Cox) is a very dysfunctional mom with a son, Jesse Waingrow (David Kaye) who is fast on his way to becoming a criminal. One scene has Cybil making gymnastic love to Michael Zane (Kurt Douglas). Jesse sneaks into the bedroom during the lovemaking and steals Michael's wallet.
The master mind of the heist is Murphy played by Kevin Costner. It was a very different role than I am used to seeing Kevin in. Murphy has almost no redeeming qualities. He kills just about everybody he encounters. What got me is that for the most part I forget it was Kevin Costner.
If there is a good guy in the movie it is Michael Zane played by Kurt Russell. Kurt Russell has a tendency to play these characters with about one or two emotional responses, generally a depressive individual with a flat affect. He does so here.
The movie moves fast. It is very violent in the beginning and very violent in the end. While most of the plot twists and turns were predictable they kept me involved.
Quigley is played by Thomas Haden Church of Wings fame. I just never really bought him as the Federal Marshall chasing these crooks.
The soundtrack was really good, and there were more than a few Elvis tunes scattered through out the film. I'm not a huge Elvis fan, but hey he is The King.
There were some pieces at the end that I did not put together the first time I watched the film. Thinking about the movie after the second viewing gave it a little different flavor. Nuff said, do not want to give that away.
I am still trying to put my finger on why I cannot stop thinking about this movie. It was well done. It was entertaining. Maybe it was all the dysfunctional characters. Maybe it was the soundtrack. But for some reason it sticks. I'm not going to watch it again tomorrow, but I could see me doing so a few months from now.
3000 Miles to Graceland [Region 2] Overview
Opening with metallic computer-generated scorpions battling in a scorching desert wasteland, 3000 Miles to Graceland announces itself as one helluva nasty movie. A comedic wallow in antiheroic violence, the movie vomits off the screen, as if director Demian Lichtenstein--obviously a veteran of music videos--had mainlined amphetamines before stepping behind his oh-so-busy camera. In a futile attempt to out-Woo John Woo, Lichtenstein goes to extremes to achieve a kind of absurd in-your-face exhilaration, and for additional thrills, the movie gives second-billing to Kevin Costner in the most vile role of his career. As leather-clad Elvis impersonator and Presley bastard child Thomas Murphy, Costner's like a black-sheep brother to Raising Arizona's biker from hell.
With four accomplices including a fellow Elvis worshipper named Michael (Kurt Russell), Murphy storms a Vegas casino for a .2 million robbery that turns into a haywire bloodbath. Partners are eliminated, double-crosses abound, and Michael connects with a trashy sexpot (Courteney Cox Arquette) whose preteen son (David Kaye) is a precocious criminal in training. Murphy's on their trail, FBI agents are on Murphy's, and gradually things get really nasty. We're supposed to laugh at the blackness of it all, and sometimes the ballsy humor scores a bull's-eye. The road-movie action accommodates several twists of plot, and while Russell's enjoying a semireprise of his performance in John Carpenter's Elvis, there's something perversely thrilling about Costner's deadpan ruthlessness. But really, how amoral can one movie be without wearing out its welcome? Frenetically depraved, 3000 Miles to Graceland is like exotic roadkill: morbidly fascinating until you get a whiff of its stench. --Jeff Shannon

Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Three Seasons
Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Three Seasons Review

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman is my favorite show of all time. The show was on for four seasons from 1993-1997. What made this show so special was the great chemistry Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher had on screen along with a great supporting cast. I was a huge fan watching the first episode in the fall of 1993 (I was 16 years old) and never missed an episode. When the last episode aired in 1997 (I was 20 years old) I was sad when the show ended because like so many other fans I grew up with this show and it was a huge part of my life. I remember every Sunday night I would look so forward to seeing Lois & Clark. As kids my best friend Maria and I would talk about the show the next day and say how we had so many similarities to these characters. It is awesome to see this show finally come to DVD. I encourage all of the fans to buy this amazing collection and to write your reviews on how much you enjoyed this great show. Below is a complete episode list of the first, second, and third Season of Lois & Clark and lets hope the final fourth season will see a DVD release soon.

The Legend
The Legend Review

Due to a glitch at Amazon, there are numerous reviews cross-pasted from a hatchet-job of this movie called "The Legend." Buy the Dragon Dynasty release without fear: this is the real deal!
I've seen this movie in the theater several times. I can tell you that this is not only one of Jet Li's finest films, but also one of the real gems of HK movies, and one of the best period martial arts films of all time.
The characters are fun and charming, the acting full of energy. The story and script is humorous and heroic. The sets and period evocations are flawless.
Of course, the fighting is incredible: full use is made of many large set-pieces, similar to Iron Monkey and Wing Chun. And Jet is at the pinnacle of his grace and power, as well as boyish charm wedded to striking nobility and screen presence.
I advise all lovers of HK martial arts to see this brilliant film made during the modern height of the Hong Kong cinema glory days. And then come back and stick a 5-star review in here so this wonderful movie doesn't get done in by The Legend's bad reputation.
The Legend Overview
Martial arts matinee idol Jet Li Lin-Kit, who made his U.S. debut as a bad guy in Lethal Weapon 4, portrays a real life turn-of-the-century Cantonese patriot, the dauntless Fong Sai-Yuk. This is a much more blunt and straightforward effort than Tsui Hark's flamboyant Once Upon a Time in China films, but codirectors Ann Hui (Song of the Exile) and Yuen Kwai (Yes, Madam) deliver many lively and funny sequences. For U.S. viewers, the revelation of the film will be Josephine Siao, a Cantonese film star of the '60s, in both comedies and high-flying swordplay films, who plays Fong Sai-Yuk's martial mother. Siao disguises herself as man to enter a martial arts competition and ends up winning both the prize and the heart of a high official's daughter--mostly because the girl has never met a hero with so much poetic sensitivity lurking just beneath the surface. Chu Kong (Sidney in John Woo's The Killer) plays Fong Sai-Yuk's father as an anti-Manchu patriot so unbendingly upright that he's a bit of a prig, and as the action heats up, political stakes emerge more clearly. In the grand finale, Fong Sai-Yuk squares off against a Manchu killer played with great panache by newcomer Chiu Man-cheuk. --David Chute

Battlefield Baseball
Battlefield Baseball Review

Dismembered bodies. Zombies. Tornado pitches. Cherry blossoms. Random naked guys. Cyborgs. Chainsaws. And a form of baseball where no rules apply -- and only one team comes out alive.
Now imagine all of that, crammed into a sports spoof with a Monty Pythonesque sense of humor. "Battlefield Baseball" has not a single moment of genuine plot or character development -- instead, Yudai Yamaguchi fills it with ludicrous twists, delightfully sick action, and a deeply irreverent attitude towards all sports movies.
Seido High School has a very real chance of getting to Koshien Stadium, courtesy of Matsui Gorilla and a bunch of other talented players. Then Principcal Kocho learns who their opponent is -- Gedo High, a savage bunch of green-skinned mutant zombie types who dismember opposing teams.
Fortunately the new transfer student Jubeh (Tak Sakaguchi) has incredible baseball skills -- but he refuses, unwilling to play because of a tragic accident. Four Eyes (Atsushi Ito) convinces him to join the team -- but Jubeh is mysteriously missing when Gedo shows up for the game, resulting in a mass slaughter of the remaining baseball players.
But after a near-death experience and a scuffle with Four Eyes' mom, Jubeh is raring to take revenge on the team that slaughtered the Seido players -- if he can remember how to do his most lethal pitch. But even with that pitch and a very odd new team, Jubeh must still contend with the psychopathic Coach from Gedo High -- and the deadly Poison Bat!
There is literally not a single serious moment in all of "Battlefield Baseball." Really. This is absurdity on a Monty Python level, only with more applauding audiences appearing at dramatic moments. In fact, that is much of its charm -- "Battlefield Baseball" spends all its time relentlessly mocking sports movies of the drippiest kind.
In particular, it spoofs the sentimental stuff (the ludicrous "family reunion"), contrived plot twists (Jubeh is arrested for no reason), deus ex machinae, sudden changes of heart, and an obligatory romance. And lest a single sports cliche be left unmocked, Yamaguchi trots out an Inspiring Message near the end, reminding us that baseball is all about life and love of the game. Even the dialogue ("I've been a head teacher here for twenty-five years. I'm always ready to sacrifice myself for Seido!") is hilarious.
That would only be moderately funny in most spoofs. But Yamaguchi takes it WAY further, by making everything as insane, stupid and ludicrous as possible -- people burst into song for no reason, run around with swords, wear gold loincloths, turn into cyborgs, and one character is constantly being "reborn" with new actors. And everything important that happens has a large audience standing by to applaud.
Yamaguchi also piles on the gore and grotesquerie. Ears are ripped off, crowds are gunned down, players are impaled on bats, and every game ends with a bunch of bloody plastic limbs strewn around. It's really sick, and really hysterical.
The gorgeous Tak Sakaguchi is put to good use here -- not only does he get to show off his polished physical skills, but he's hilarious at the Ruggedly Handsome Hero ("My dad told me to, when I was dead ten minutes ago!"). Wind blows through his hair, he sheds a manly tear, skids across a baseball field on his stomach, and spends several minutes savagely beating a rubber dummy.
You can tell that this must have been fun. The other actors also do great jobs -- Ito is excellent as Four Eyes (yes, that is his name), a dweeb with a deep love of baseball. And the guys playing the psychotic Coach, the stressed-out Kocho, the bestial Gorilla and the rabidly enthusiastic Head Teacher all do wonderful jobs, no matter how kooky their characters.
"Battlefield Baseball" revels in the mockery of your average sports movie, when it's not tossing around body parts and magical cherry blossoms. A deliciously sick, warped little comedy.
Battlefield Baseball Overview
Official import edition. Japanese language, English subtitles. From the creators of Versus! The baseball diamond is not just a place to play sports. No, it is a coliseum where gladiators wage war for their very lives with bats, balls and gloves. It is a boxing ring. It is an arena of death. It is, like love, a battlefield. Sedio High has a championship baseball team until they clash with the living dead zombies of Gedo High who rip off their heads, pull out their arms and explode their guys in a display of fighting baseball skills that will make your blood run cold. Now, the coach of Seido High turns to the loner, Jubeh, with his fantastic pitching skills, to save his team from total annihilation. The bad guys are rubber dummies and zombie baseball fighters who look like Halloween costumes gone wrong. Dogs talk, cherry blossoms waft through the air at inappropriate moments and kinetic cutting that defies logic, defies common sense, and achieves greatness by wallowing in filth and bad taste. Bodies fly through the air, giant hammers are wielded, and a cult is born.

Animation Runner Kuromi
Animation Runner Kuromi Review

I bought this DVD immediately when it was released.
Who could pass up an an anime based and parodies the actual anime industry? I've heard about these type of parody anime and I recall reading about Mikimoto Haruhiko ("Macross", "Gunbuster", etc.) actually creating one but was only given to staff and friends back in the early 90's but really haven't seen anything for the many years I have been watching anime.
But there are always stories about the behind-the-scenes of an animation studio and how sometimes the anime that is aired, sometimes gets there within minutes or an hour after finalization. From the crazy tight deadlines and overworked staff, for those of us here in America who will never get to experience or see that kind of work environment of how anime is created and developed, fortunately "Animation Runner Kuromi" is here.
The series is directed by Daichi Akitaro known for his work with "Fruits Basket", "Now and Then, Here and There" and "Jubei-Chan the Ninja Girl" to name a few. The sreenwriter is Nagatsuki Tou and the OAV won "BEST OAV" Award at the Tokyo International Anime Fair.
The series is about a new employee named Oguro Mikiko (which the president of the company automatically names her Kuromi) who was hired to work at the famous animation studio, Studio Petit.
The studio is behind on schedule for "Time Journeys Episode 2 and with the boss falling ill, he appoints Kuromi as production desk manager and puts her immediately in charge.
Essentially just a newbie in the industry with hardly any experience, Kuromi is put in leadership position and has to motivate a staff that is too lax and literally a bunch of slackers. With the threat of the second episode of "Time Journeys" not being completed, Kuromi is learning that this staff, during deadlines, they make excuses and end their work early. The fact that many of them work at home, makes it a problem for Kuromi.
Because of their way of working, Kuromi feels dejected and has nightmares that the episode will not get to the TV station on time and feels like quitting.
But Kuromi decides to not quit and make immediate changes that will affect the studio and hopefully they will complete the next episode of "Time Journeys".
I pretty much enjoyed the insight of an anime studio. May it be the parody from the anime OAV or the actual behind-the-scenes footage on the special features.
I'm very glad to see that CPM decided to include so many special features for the DVD release and all in all, it was just a blast to watch, especially if you have interest on what goes behind-the-scenes at an anime studio.
But all in all, this is an OAV that is not meant to be taken seriously, it is not meant to spawn a TV series. It's just a parody on what goes on at an anime studio and for anime fans to just sit back and enjoy.
It accomplishes what it wants to convey to the viewer. No deep storyline, no major character development. Just an enjoyable and hilarious OAV about woman working her dream job at an anime studio and realizing that it's all hard work, stressful but is handled in a way that people can watch, understand but laugh at the same time.
I got what I want from it and that's to learn about the crazy things that go on at an anime studio and the fact that the viewer not only just gets to see a parody of it, but also included in the special features are video footage of people at work. That was great to see!
All in all, I recommend this OAV series for the anime fan who has interest on how an anime series is created.
Animation Runner Kuromi Overview
Kuromi just landed her dream job at a famous animation studio, and boy is she in for a rude awakening! It's up to her to finish a hot new cartoon, or fans everywhere will be let down. Will Kuromi's love of cartoons clean up this horrible mess...or make an even bigger one?
Animation Runner Kuromi Specifications
Because she grew up watching Louis Monde III, Mikiko "Kuromi" Oguro decided to pursue a career in animation: to her brief delight, she lands a job as "animation runner" (assistant production manager) at Petit Studios. Then the fun begins. With just a week left to go on episode #2 of Time Journeys, only five of the 312 cuts (scenes) in the program have been completed! Kuromi spends the week on fast forward, nagging animators, chasing down artwork, juggling schedules, etc. Director/storyboard artist Akitaroh Diachi punches up the humor by including bits of the show in various stages of completion. This brief (40 minutes) OVA offers a very funny spoof of how studio animation is done, both in Japan and the United States. The more the viewer knows about the process, the more they'll appreciate the jokes. (Unrated: Suitable for ages 10 and up: tobacco use, minor cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Inuyasha - Promise of the Past (Vol. 28)
Inuyasha - Promise of the Past (Vol. 28) Review

as a BIG inuyasha fan, these episodes are my favorite.
episode 82- after a big battle with naraku, Kagome heds home, and inuyasha can not help but follow. Uh-oh Kagome forgot her lunch at home, guess who her mom asks to diliver it to her, none other than inuyasha. At first the thought of dilevering lunch was easy but inuyasha doesnt know the dangers of "the present" on his way there, a robber was running away from a cop with inuyasha right infront of him. while the robber was running, he threatens inuyasha, inuyasha obviously gets angry and punches him in the face, but for some reason the present isnt as nice as it was before, his next stop was at a building on fire, he rescues a little girl but as he flew out of the building to the ground his hat fell off. after his long adventure and later when Kagome got home. inuyasha was on the NEWS!!!!! and he was so worn out from the day, he fell asleep in kagome's bed
83- the wolf demon tribe in the mountains his having a lot of problems and the leader of the pack sends a young wolf demon girl named AYAME to fetch KOGA so they can marry. a long time ago, ayame was being chased by demons called "THE BIRDS OF PARADICE) and Ayame thought she was going to die but koga saved her. kouga promised her that he would marry her when she got a little older and on the very night they saw a rae lunar rainbow (a rainbow at night) but koga wouldnt go to marry ayame, but ayame was very persistant. Koga claimed he had a fiance named Kagome, and when ayame tracks down Koga to Naraku's old castle, a hudge demon made from naraku's discarded body parts erupts from the castle and chases Ayame who meets up with koga's friends HAKAKU and GINTA. while inuyasha fights the demon, Koga brings Kagome to safty, but they meet up with ayame accidentaly. Ayame is furious with Koga for falling in love with a mortal and she threatens to kill Kagome.
84-(i only saw the end <_>) After the battle, Ayame asked Koga if he remembered ANYTHING that happened that night. he thought really hard about it and remembered the whole senerio. but his answer was...
"NO...sorry...besides she was tiny." he said actually in a very embarssed voice. She was still mad but when koga said kagome was perfect because she could see the sacred jewl shards ayame said that she would make herself be able to see them too. koga said dream you cant do that and after a whole argument ayme starts laughing and he asks whats so funny and she says YOULL SEE and she runs off. after that Sango, Miroku, and Shippo were talking about ayame's comment "Then i will make myself see the sacred jewl shards too." and asking eachother and answering eachother if that was possible.
i really enjoyed these episodes they really made me laugh...and not because Koga is one of my fav. characters, because they were well planned, well drawn, well voice acted, and just well done. i give this DVD out of 5 star a 6, yes a 6 because it is just soooooooo good.

Ready to Wear
Ready to Wear Review

You either like this movie, or you hate it.
Personally, I enjoy it - Robert Altman can do good satire, and this is a good one. Sure, you'll probably have to watch it several times (and possibly even do some studying) in order to get all the various jokes and scathing comments about the fashion world and about Paris... but it's fun.
There's a lot of serious talent in this film - Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia Loren, Kim Basinger, Stephen Rea, Rupert Everett, Forest Whitaker, Julia Roberts, Tim Robbins, Lauren Bacall... the list goes on.
While it seems to be primarily a murder mystery set in the world of high fashion, it is a lovely satire on the industry itself, and what people find acceptable. The end sequence with the "emperor's new clothes" fashion show is highly enjoyable in itself - not just because of the nudity, but because of what it says about the fashion industry. Watching Basinger's character melt down on camera is interesting and quite enjoyable... and was one of the inspirations for The Devil Wears Prada (Widescreen Edition).
This movie isn't for everyone - you require a sense of humor and a good grasp of satire. But Robert Altman has pulled off another sleight of hand with this.
Ready to Wear Overview
A glittering Hollywood all-star cast shines in Robert Altman's deliciously sexy comedy hit READY TO WEAR! At the world's hottest fashion show, there's been a murder. Now, everybody's a suspect -- including two guests who end up sharing much more than a hotel room! Add to the fun a hilariously inept TV reporter on the trail of her most shocking interview yet! They're all caught up in the year's biggest see-and-be-seen events -- where steamy scandals and spectacular supermodels turn up the heat in a riotous show of high-fashion hilarity.
Ready to Wear Specifications
Robert Altman's much-anticipated broadside at the world of fashion is a disappointment. The film's crazy-quilt Nashville-like narrative structure and ensemble casting (Julia Roberts, Tim Robbins, Lauren Bacall, Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia Loren) are a thing to behold, but the story's many interlocking pieces lack overall depth and resonating emotion. There is a grand, satiric statement about fashion and society at the end of the film, and there are hints of an aging, nostalgic filmmaker's skepticism about our postmodern world of short-lived attachments and meanings. But watching this film is a long, long uphill climb, with a lot of thin air to endure before arriving at a destination. --Tom Keogh

Battle Athletes, Vol. 2: Ready, Set, Go
Battle Athletes, Vol. 2: Ready, Set, Go Review

It was cheep & looked cute. I thought at least I would enjoy the animation if nothing else, but it was really a lot better than I was expecting! It looks so much like Tenchi (hair, clothes, setting, etc.) that that's what I thought I'd get. (I love Tenchi, too, of course) But the atmosphere is totaly different. Hmmmmm... can't really think of a series it reminds me of right off. It just has a really realistic, inspirational feel...It's really easy to get into how Akari feels about getting to University Satilite. She's excited & determined, even when she gets a bit of a shock, learning she's not as great as she thought, at the beginning. All the charicters are cool & original. For the most part they are too cute & awesome to hate. (because that happens too much! Poor Amelia... Poor Usagi... Poor Mia... weeeeell, Miaka's pushing it, but I like her, too.) None of them are the wimpy kind, anyway (they get bashed most) but they can't be, not if they got into US. Sorry, I just had to emphisize how well designed the characters are. They make the story great. The only one I don't liek is the B!tchy second year she meets in the first ep. XP but it's good to have bad guys, or how do you have heros. Oh, & another thing is, I didn't get bored. Not at all. I get bored easily, too. Still wavering? Get this anime. I'm telling you, you'll love it...
Battle Athletes, Vol. 2: Ready, Set, Go Overview
Gradually Akari and her friends come closer to attaining the status of "Cosmic Beauty." First they must confront the mid-term exam: A.R.M.S. Orienteering in an orbital elevator. Kris, Anna and Akari overcome various obstacles. However, they soon find themselves in deep trouble. Now their true abilities will be tested in the coldness of outerspace...
Battle Athletes, Vol. 2: Ready, Set, Go Specifications
Training continues for 16-year-old Akari Kanzaki, who hopes to win the "Cosmic Beauty" competition. With her teammates Kris and Anna, she must complete a 40-kilometer obstacle course run through a 1,000-year-old abandoned satellite in "Screaming Advance." They're off to a record-breaking start when the evil Mylandah sabotages the school's computer system, threatening not only the success of Akari's team, but their lives. The trio manages to escape through a combination of pluck, daring, and athletic prowess, although the girls still require the aid of Grant Oldman, the sky-surfing headmaster. The enormous satellite used as a test course crashes to Earth but causes no damage aside from the splash it makes when it hits the ocean. To recuperate, the girls go to a hot spring in the satellite that serves as their training camp/dorm, where they make a shocking discovery about Anna. "Match Unexpected" centers on the annual boys' school vs. girls' school competition, with Akari, Tanya, and Mylandah representing their alma mater in a game of Acro Spike, a cross between soccer and volleyball. The sexual undercurrents move into the open as Headmaster Oldman dresses his players in skimpy outfits and encourages them to pose provocatively to distract the boys. (The strategy backfires when the boys' school sends gay athletes to the contest.) Anna appears with a new identity and Kris, who continues to run around naked, gives Akari a full-body massage. --Charles Solomon

Chicken Run
Chicken Run Review

Chickens strive to escape from their pen before they can be turned into chicken pies. When a fugitive rooster (Mel Gibson) seems to fly into their midst, they become convinced that he can teach them all to fly away from their danger.
Nick Park and the crew at Aardman Studios have produced another wonderful family comedy utilizing the unique art of clay animation. Like their other films, it features lots of madcap action sequences and homages to classic films (in this case, prison standards such as "The Great Escape" and "Stalag 17"). Children and adults can watch together with equal enjoyment. Parents, there is one fairly shocking scene early on when a chicken is slaughtered. The killing is off-screen, but there is no doubt about what has happened and it may be scary for young children. At any rate, it certainly demonstrates why our heroes are so desperate to get away. Recommended.
Chicken Run Overview
There were a lot of disappointments in the 2000 summer movie season, but Chicken Run wasn't one of them. Made by Aardman Animations, which produced the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit shorts, this is a dazzling stop-motion animation film that is both deftly funny and surprisingly touching. The concept is simple: The Great Escape--with chickens. But directors Peter Lord and Nick Park take it much further than that (and remember: there's a whole generation out there that has no idea who Steve McQueen is). Julia Sawalha voices Ginger, a plucky English hen who has been trying to escape from Tweedy's chicken farm, where the vicious Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) fries up any chicken who doesn't produce enough eggs. When egg profits slump, Mrs. Tweedy decides to turn her farm into a chicken-pie factory, giving new urgency to Ginger's plan. Enter Rocky the Flying Rooster (Mel Gibson), a brash American who has escaped from a circus and promises to teach the chickens to fly to safety. The film is filled with innumerable visual touches and the animation has a tactile quality that makes you want to reach out and touch these funny fowl. Above all, it's played with intelligence, wit, and heart--a rare combination in any film. While Chicken Run is being marketed to a youth audience, it truly is a family film that operates on both a child and an adult level. It would be a shame if grownups skipped it because they thought it was strictly for kids. --Marshall Fine

Agent Cody Banks (Special Edition)
Agent Cody Banks (Special Edition) Review

A great fast, fun, clean and enjoyable movie. Its a shame the book was not as good, but this film is great, yes the actor does a big part in the movie and carries the film. It may not be a classic, but is full of fun and well worth watching. Cody is like Jason Steed, Alex Rider a young 007, teen spy.
Agent Cody Banks deserves much more attention than it gets
Plot: Cody Banks (Frankie Muniz) learns he is a secret agent and he is brought in for training by Ronica Miles (Angie Harmon) who ends up his sidekick. He meets the CIA Director (Keith David) and prepares on his first mission while his parents, Mrs. Banks (Cynthia Stevenson) and Mr. Banks (Daniel Roebuck) along with his younger brother Alex Banks (Connor Widdows) have no idea what is going on. His mission is to get close to Natalie Connors (Hilary Duff) in hopes that she will invite him to her birthday party so he can use the opportunity to spy on her dad, Dr. Connors (Martin Donovan) because he is under suspicion for working for ERIS an illegal corporation. Complications arise when Natalie is kidnapped and Cody must rescue her.
The Good News: Right away the film starts with a big action sequence and it's a very impressive one at that. There is so much to like here it's a wonder that this series has never gotten as much attention as the Spy Kids series even if the second film is lousy. Director Herald Zwart brings a lot of flair to this film as the film is shot beautifully and never looks cheap or boring. The script by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, Scott Alexander, and Larry Karaszewski is never boring and never loses your interest when nothing is happening. The acting is great, long time friends Frankie Muniz and Hilary Duff star and Hilary Duff shows the talent that would carry her through the next few years and Frankie Muniz is no slacker in the role of Cody Banks and it's no surprise that he would go on to be a star even if he never got as much fame as Hilary. The best supporting roles go to Keith David as the CIA Director and it's not a wonder that he returned for the sequel and the other one goes to Angie Harmon as Ronica Miles. She is energetic on screen and you fell her presence throughout the film. The plot, while nothing new proves you don't have to always have a fresh plot to make the film enjoyable. The film's tag line is one of the best and it sets the tone for the film, the running time is 102 minutes, but it seems a lot shorter than that and has a high re watch-ability factor. The action scenes are outstanding and the two that come off as the best are the diner scene and the ending. There are more such as when Cody is at Natalie's birthday party and he's spying on Dr. Connors and the beginning, it's really hard to pick a favorite one, but the diner scene and the ending come off as the best. I also recorded a few good laughs here and there between the action breaks. One of the biggest laughs is Ronica's first appearance, I don't want to ruin it for you as it is the biggest laugh our of the entire film. I'm also not a big fan of the boyfriend and girlfriend situation, but here is works well and flows well with the plot.
The Bad News: I couldn't find anything wrong except a few logical errors which every film has
Conclusion: If you like action or adventure movies then this film is definitely for you and if you haven't seen it already grab yourself a DVD copy today! Recommeded

Agent Cody Banks (Special Edition) Specifications
Doing for awkward teens what the Spy Kids movies did for grade-schoolers, Agent Cody Banks is a wish-fulfillment adventure for James Bond wannabes who are still too young to shave. Just in time for puberty's curtain call, Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz stars in the title role as a 15-year-old recruit to the CIA's youth-agent program, who gets what millions of men desire: a face full of Angie Harmon's cleavage. (It's just for laughs; the sexy Law & Order alumnus plays Cody's CIA handler, but you've got to admit this Bond Girl with a boy thing is a bit perverse.) Otherwise, the movie's a low-rent Bond clone from the director of One Night at McCool's, with a pair of twisted villains (Ian McShane, Arnold Vosloo) threatening to unleash stolen "Nanobot" technology that can ruin everyone's day. It's barely fun enough to be worthwhile, but the best gag (at 007's expense) is buried in the soundtrack, when a CIA receptionist announces, "Will the owner of a silver Aston Martin please report to security... you are parked in a handicapped zone." So much for respecting your elders! --Jeff Shannon

Southland Tales
Southland Tales Review

Seriously, have three vodka martinis, settle down, and enjoy the movie of your lifetime. There is so much here that will blow your unsettled mind. I mean, "Cheri Oteri in the best role of her career!"--what does that mean? And yet, here it is! Richard Kelley poured his soul into this, and got absolutely nothing for his efforts. Is there even a cult following for this film? There HAS to be! It deserves it on so many levels. So many wonderful moments. So many surprising appearances. (Amy Poehler? A haunting Jon Lovitz?) Beautiful...odd...a weird, sparkly, deep-ish, end-of-the-world gift from a distinctive voice, aiming high and achieving...eh, something that deserves seeing. The cranberry and vodka is on me. Enjoy!
Southland Tales Overview
Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros is an action star who's stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now, an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark, a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.
Southland Tales Specifications
Well, filmmakers should aim high, they say. And Richard Kelly shot the moon on his highly-anticipated follow-up to cult sensation Donnie Darko, which expands the apocalyptic mood of that movie and blows it up tenfold. Set during the election season of 2008, Southland Tales proposes a series of apparently linked events: the reappearance of a vanished movie star (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), now an amnesiac; the bizarre doubling of a policeman (Seann William Scott in two roles); the development of an energy source from ocean waves; and the presence of an Iraq War veteran (Justin Timberlake) who seems to be watching everything, and narrating some of it. Not that the narration helps; even with voice-over (reportedly added after the film's disastrous debut at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival), Southland Tales doesn't come close to making sense, let alone at the minimum level of dangling a carrot to lead the audience along (even Mulholland Drive had a semblance of murder mystery to be solved, or not). The cast is loaded with Saturday Night Live cut-ups, but only Jon Lovitz connects, and in other roles people like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christopher Lambert, Bai Ling, and John Larroquette are utterly mystifying, by no fault of their own. In some of the musical sequences Kelly gets in stride, but it's easy to create drama in a three-minute music video, and harder to do over two and a half hours. Some top critics rushed to champion the movie, as though flying in the face of philistinism, so feel free to try out this incoherent pastiche for yourself. --Robert Horton

Hip Hop 4 Life
Hip Hop 4 Life Review

Hip-hop 4 Life is a movie that many people can relate to. Even though the movie is based in the Hip-hop realm, it is mainly a story about choices. The main character Devon is forced to choose between music and his friends, girlfriend, and school.
The movie also tries to show the amount of practice and dedication it takes to make it in the music business and that here is a lot more to it then just talent. It also introduces new things in the underground battle scene such as the prop test and tag team battles, two things you have to witness.
Overall this is a good movie for teens and adults to watch, there are a few intimate love scenes, but nothing too graphic. I'd recommend this move to anybody who wants to watch a good story. Don't let the Hip-hop in the name fool you. Everyone can enjoy this film even if you don't listen to Hip-hop music.

Flash Gordon
Flash Gordon Review

Flash Gordon Saviour of the Universe is just a great load of cheesy good fun. It's not really for young kids because there's too much almost-sex in it, but for adults, it's just fun and goofy. I mean, the Hawk Men, with Brian Blessed as Voltan? Classic and hilarious.
Topol as Dr. Hans Zarkov is the reason I bought the movie, and I wasn't disappointed in his performance at all.
I highly recommend it to all with a heart for silliness and fun!
Beware of the sound track. You'll be singing "FLASH! AAAAAAAAHHHHH!" in the shower without even trying.
Flash Gordon Overview
Strange energy waves from the planet Mongo pull the moon out of orbit threatening Earth, and NY Jets quarterback Flash Gordon and the lovely Dale Arden must destroy Mongo's ruler, Ming the Merciless, before Earth is annihilated. Music by Queen.
Flash Gordon Specifications
When the totalitarian planet of Mongo decides on a whim to obliterate Earth, it's up to the lunk-headed quarterback Flash Gordon and his oddball companions to make the universe safe for democracy. Based on the classic (and infinitely more reputable) comic strip and its '30s screen serialization, this cotton-candy-colored trash classic deserves immortality for Queen's unforgettably pulsating soundtrack alone. The legendary Max von Sydow appears to be having a blast as the evil Ming the Merciless, while Ornella Muti, as his daughter, is the living embodiment of what attracts adolescent boys to comics in the first place. (She makes Barbarella look mundane.) One of the most shamelessly entertaining movies ever made, this is a knowingly absurd sensory freak-out that'll have the viewer blissfully checking the sky afterward for signs of Hawkmen. --Andrew Wright

Glee, Vol. One: Road to Sectionals
Glee, Vol. One: Road to Sectionals Review

Anyone reading this is probably a Glee fan, so I'll be brief:
Pros - it's Glee, so great writing/production/performances! "Welcome To McKinley" video with Principal Figgins is hilarious.
Cons - only standard definition;
extras are lifted from Fox website (except for the one mentioned above) so LAME EFFORT;
no optional commentary tracks.
If you're a fan, you probably won't care about the cons so much. If you're better at delayed gratification than me, wait for a Blu-ray of the entire first season (including the upcoming episodes that will air beginning in April 2010) and pray for better extras!

Discount National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Special Edition)

This will one day be a classic. At least for me, it has made me laugh. It has a bit of everything about the Christmas Holidays, in particular, the insanity of shopping. Family is great and this movie shows that at this time of the year, we need to take the good with the bad (cousin Eddie). I already had the movie but wanted to upgrade to blu-ray (the price was right) and give the other copy to my son, who happens to have the same warped sense of humor as his old man. A fun family movie except near the end the big kahuna, the word Ralphie( A Christmas Story) escapes Clark Griswald mouth when he loses it. Delivery was as promised. The only negative I found is, with both copies, something was/is not right with the sound - I need to turn up my system to the top to hear. Only DVD that I need to do that with. Why??? Cheapest Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition) [Blu-ray]

I am a Blu-ray noob, but I could not get past the BD-Live features of this disc and watch the movie. It did play on another player, but it was slow, and the Skynet menus, etc., did not add anything worthwhile. I would avoid this version since Amazon does not allow returns if it doesn't work in your equipment. Get the non-Skynet version instead.
I do give it 2 stars because it is still a great movie, but the picture quality, while better than DVD, is not up to newer HD releases if you have a screen capable of 1920 resolution.

Purchase A Christmas Story (Full-Screen Edition)

As I've grown in maturity, my tastes have changed in many respects. For most of my adult life my favorite Christmas story has been Charles Dickens classic scenario "A Christmas Carol" written in 1843 and which still remains as one of my favorite Christmas classics. In fact the movie rendition by Alastair Sim is indeed a Christmas ritual to be seen by all. With the last 20 years I've changed my mind as to the ultimate "Christmas Story".
Up front, I must confess that this classic movie was indeed shot and is deeply ensconced into the very fabric of Cleveland culture. The very house in the movie scenes is now a museum on the near west side of Cleveland. The very mention of "The Higbee Company" issues the very essence of "A Christmas Story". When these scenes were shot in January of 1983, I remember the cold sweeping winds coming off Lake Erie putting Northeast Ohio in a deep freeze.
The story itself remains a classic in American culture. Set in the fictional city of Hohman, Indiana all the dreams and culture of pre-World War II America presents itself. In fact from a historical point of view the Depression was in fact over and America, not at war, was in the beginnings of unprecedented prosperity. The actual beginning of life in America as it should be. In fact Ralphie experienced life on the upswing.
The fact of this pre-adolescent receiving a treasured Christmas present shows the rise of the middle class which has gone unabated since. The Christmas morning scene in which the "Old Man" stated that he got a BB gun at Ralphie's age shows the end of the depression and the start of the "good times". However as we watch this movie we can see that discipline 7 decades ago was very real. Life was indeed more structured and disciplined. The family not only ate their evening meals together, they also ate their breakfasts as a family unit. Expectations were tempered and hoped for. Life was easier but held more accountable. Life was simple and fraught with troubles but in the end, life had meaning and purpose.
This story shows us a piece of Americana never to be seen again. Family life as shown in this movie no longer exists which to me represents the sad passing of an institution which is in desperate need in our 21st century way of life. It's really no wonder why this story runs a 24 hour Christmas marathon each year. This is the big screen equivalent of a Norman Rockwell painting representing what American life was.

Order August Rush

Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) attended Julia Music Performing Arts School in New York and played the cello. Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) was the member of a rock band. There was a connection between them the second they met and on that day a musical genius was conceived. The day she gave birth, Lyla's father made a choice that he claimed was for both of them, but it was really a selfish decision. Lyla no longer had her son and she was separated from Louis.
Evan Taylor (Freddie Highmore) listened to sounds of the wind, city streets, etc and he would hear music. He was in a home for boys where his gift was not appeciated because they saw him as freakishly different. He wanted to be with his birth parents, not placed in someone's home. He had no anger because they gave him up, but was consumed with thoughts of where they could possibly be and he kept believing he could follow the music that would lead him to them.
I enjoyed August Rush. Maxwell 'Wizard' Wallace (Robin Williams)bothered me a bit, though. He acted like he cared about Evan but he didn't really want this boy to be happy. He deceived him and tried to fill his mind with doubt. Wizard's thinking was all messed up because he was scarred by the foster care system. He lived in an abandoned theater with homeless children he was supposedly taking care of but he was really using them. It was a good thing Richard Jeffries (Terrance Howard) cared about what happened to Evan.
There's a scene where a choir is practicing a beautiful song and the ending touched my heart. This is a movie for the entire family.Get more detail about August Rush.

Where To Buy A Clockwork Orange [Blu-ray]

This film has overt messages: we are what we are, and only a chemical means will change us, because there is no such thing as redemption. But chemical solutions are out of the question because we cannot trust the government or doctors not to abuse this power. And redemption is a moot point anyway, because the very idea of redemption is just a catch word to be used by preachers and politicians.
Why would I care about Alex's absolution anyway? The film did nothing to make me care about him or his soul... And yet Kubrick tries to get you to care about this monster. Alex winds up, after his "treatment", unable to defend himself against those he wronged. I was cheering this part of the film, and did not find it believable that people would be horrified by his comeuppance, especially at the hands of those he wronged.
To say there is a glorification of sex and violence is an understatement.
Because the thing that particularly bothers me about this film is the sped up scene of repeated consensual sex between the main character (Alex) and two young women. In the film, the scene is gratuitous porn that makes Alex out to be a stud... he keeps going and going and going. No wonder teenage boys love this movie. This glorification must be Kubrick's idea, not the writer of the book (Anthony Burgess), who is much more honest about his depravity. In the book on which this film is based, the scene involves not women, but two young girls who are drugged and then raped. Why didn't Kubrick stick to the original story? Raping children is much more in character with the violent sociopath that is Alex.
There is one good thing about this film: if I ever need a character reference, all I need do is ask "what do you think of 'A Clockwork Orange'?. The sociopaths will be revealed. Thank you, Kubrick. Get more detail about A Clockwork Orange [Blu-ray].

Shop For From the Earth to the Moon - The Signature Edition

No, it's not perfect. Yes, some episodes could perhaps have been better. But given that the Gemini and Mercury programs were covered in The Right Stuff, and Apollo 13 was covered in the movie of the same name, it does an excellent job of demonstrating the heroism and engineering marvel that was the Apollo program. It covers all aspects, from the astronauts, to their wives, to the engineers, to the administrators. Special effects are wonderful, the individual astronauts are portrayed with great faithfulness, and each mission is approached uniquely and with fresh insight. While some could look at Apollo 12 and 14-17 and think they're all pretty much the same, this series not only makes each crew and mission unique, it also brings attention to the previously unheralded missions that led up to Apollo 11, save the Apollo 8 mission. My only criticism is the relatively sparse attention paid to Apollo 10. But this one criticism aside, if you're a fan of or interested at all in the men, both astronauts and engineers, as well as their families, that made history and put men on the moon -- this is well worth the money. I sadly doubt we'll ever see any endeavor as amazing, historical, heroic or inspiring as the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs again.Get more detail about From the Earth to the Moon - The Signature Edition.

Amadeus (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray]

Blu-ray book review:
The Film- The image quality is a little soft, but a vast improvement to the DVD version. The sound quality is excellent.
The hd presentation of "Amadeus" is very good considering its age, and if that isn't enough to buy this DVD the wealth of supplimentals makes this a no brainer!
The disc comes in a digibook with about forty pages of production notes and cast and crew info (unfortunately the hardback cover of my copy was slightly dented in transit). There is a digital copy compatible with Windows Media Player. I really don't see myself watching a 3 hour film on my zune, but you might. Also included is an hour long documentary on the making of the film, which is quite good. The extras that I have enjoyed the most are the audio commentary and CD. For $13 this package is a steal!Get more detail about Amadeus (Blu-ray Book) [Blu-ray].

Beetlejuice (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) Review

Let me start by saying that the DVD arrived in the condition indicated and at a good price. However, the shipping seemed to take a lot longer than I would've expected. Although it arrived within the "receive by" window, the time span they indicated was a two-week period--hardly precise info. I'm not sure why it took so long.Get more detail about Beetlejuice (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition).

Superman - The Movie [Blu-ray] Top Quality

5 of 5 stars for the comic book based movie Superman The Movie. This movie starts the franchise with the destruction of Krypton following sending of its last survivor to Earth. From the landing of his ice craft in the fields to his experiences in high school to his moving to Metropolis and working at the Daily Planet, this movies sets the basic history and story of Superman. An all star cast includes: Reeve, Hackman, Brando, Ford, Perine and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. This movie has the sequence with Lane in a long gown going flying with Superman. Once Superman is established as a character, we enter the meat of the movie where Superman fights against Lex Luther (Hackman). Helped by Perine & Beatty's characters, Luther learns to use Kryptonite to neutralize Superman. Then he steals a nuke for purposes of setting off a major Earthquake on the west coast to move "ocean-front property" to the east.
A grand movie with sweeping music and visuals, this is a really fun movie and worth watching several times!Get more detail about Superman - The Movie [Blu-ray].
