Fled

Fled Review

Laurence Fishbourne and Steven Baldwin star in this all action adventure movie which boasts stunning visual effects and many daring, hair raising stunts from the great cast. Its all action near enough from the word go but its compelling from beginning to end with its fast, furious dialogue and great performances from its two leading stars, Lawrence Fishbourne and Steven Baldwin as two escaped convicts who are chained together through there wild adventures. Lots of great thrills throughout!! Highly recommended!

Fled Overview

Two dangerously mismatched convicts are thrown into a wild race to outwit, outrun and outgun vicious enemies on both sides of the law in this high-impact thriller bristling with high-speed adventure,mind-blowing stunts and nonstop action! After escaping from a prison chain gang, Piper (Laurence Fishburne) and Dodge (Stephen Baldwin) find themselves handcuffed togetherand at each others' throats! Relentlessly hunted through the Georgia wilderness, the reluctant allies fight their way into the underground of Atlanta, battling the authoritiesand each otherall the way. But when Dodge'sconnection to million in stolen loot attracts mob assassins and corrupt government officials, the action is propelled into a deadly new dimension. With no place to hide, and everything to lose, Piper and Dodge embark on a blazing, take-no-prisoners quest to secure the key to their survival: a computer disk that could blow the lid off of a high-level scam.

Fled Specifications

In the road-movie-reluctant-pals genre, Fled goes down a road well-taken and still manages to get lost. Defiant ones Piper (Laurence Fishburne) and Dodge (Stephen Baldwin) escape from their chain gang when a prison break/shootout begins. Evading rednecks and faceless policemen they make it to Atlanta where "smart-ass" Dodge (who delivers one-liners that do a disservice to smart-asses everywhere) has to recover a computer disk. They are aided and abetted by Cora (Salma Hayek--this time using a funny hat, instead of her breasts, for character development), who takes the convicts in as if she were picking up college buddies from the airport. Maybe she realizes what great guys these prison-garbed buffoons are. They donate money to charity. They save dying rednecks. They rescue little boys from oncoming cars. Unfortunately, they can't save any of Dodge's old associates, like his stripper-with-an-apartment-of-gold girlfriend or his fellow computer hacker, from getting shot up by Cuban Mafia thugs that want that disk! Laurence Fishburne is the main reason to see the film, but that's a stretch, and Stephen Baldwin seems nothing like the same searing actor seen in The Usual Suspects.--Keith Simanton

Running Scared

Running Scared Review

Very short review, this is, with the possible and sole exception of the Redford/Newman "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", the best "buddy" movie EVER made. Crystal and Hines are *perfectly* matched, the surrounding cast of people like Daniel Hedaya and Joe Pantoliano are as hilarious as they are spectacular. A very young Jimmy Smits makes a great villain (and an even younger Jon Gries ... also great and almost unrecognizable). If you don't LOVE this movie, there's something very wrong with you. The on screen chemistry between Crystal and Hines is amazing. It is my understanding that they always wanted to do another project together, but Hines tragically died before they got the chance. Peter Hyams does a great job of directing and the opening theme by Doobie Brother alum Michael McDonald fits the film like a glove. I've watched this movie at least 100 times in the nearly 25 years since it came out and I still find it to be a thoroughly enjoyable film. If you have not seen it, get some popcorn, sit down, crank the stereo WAY up and enjoy it.

Running Scared Feature

Running Scared Overview

Dynamite screen team ( CBS Morning News ) Gregory Hines (The Cotton Club, White Nights) and Billy Crystal (City Slickers) star in the motion picture that asks the question, How come the bad guys always drive the good cars? The answer has them Running Scared in this lightning-paced comic thriller. Ray and Danny are the wild men of the Windy City's police force. The pair's unorthodox methods get results in a tough townuntil they come up against Julio Gonzales (Jimmy Smits, NYPD Blue ), a smooth-talking drug dealer who is bucking to become Chicago's first Spanish Godfather. Trying to nail Gonzales, they blow a delicate undercover operation and are sent on a forced vacation to Key Westwhere they discover the good life of warm weather and warmer women. The new locale makes them decide to retire but not before putting Gonzales behind bars first!

Running Scared Specifications

This moody 1986 buddy picture and police drama represented a change of pace for both stars. Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines play two Chicago police detectives who, feeling gun-shy about the inherent danger of their jobs, contemplate retirement in Florida. They just can't shake the allure of their work, however, particularly when their pursuit of a notorious drug dealer (Jimmy Smits) turns personal and deadly. While there are more than enough light moments generated by the easy and convincing rapport between Crystal and Hines, director Peter Hyams (The Star Chamber, 2010) succeeds in straddling the two disparate moods to create a taut and engaging action picture. --Robert Lane

Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) Review

Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club explores the darker side of mental instability in the form of a dark comedy. The film tells the rather unsettling story of an insomnia stricken man, played by Edward Norton. His life changed one day when he meets a mysterious soap maker named Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and, after his apartment room is blown up along with all of his belongings and the little that remains of his personal life, they became inspired to co-create a seedy underground club in which men are invited to attend and to pummel on each other to their heart's content as a form of physical therapy as well as an advanced form of personal male-bonding. Things get complex when a female drifter named Marla (Helena Bonham Carter) who inadvertently gets involved in the mentally deteriorated world that these two men share. Things only get worse when Tyler decides to take the club out onto the streets and then into their homes and into the lives of more political and respected people.

As technically talented as Fincher is, what I admire most about the film is how he doesn't let the visuals tell the story. I know that a lot of moviegoers hate narration, but trust me when I say that it is put to good use here. The sarcastic, bitter, angry voice of Edward Norton that plays over the events helps a lot in driving the atmosphere of the film into it's audience, but it also adds to the humor of the film. Is the film a satire? I'd go onto say that it is as much a satire as South Park is. So then why the slick visuals? Why the sly, cool tone? Why the clever dialogue? Well, to me it all seemed very forced and over-the-top. Nobody in the real world talks like these characters, and it seems pretty obvious that the film knows this. You can tell in the sarcastic narration. I think that people may likely forget that it is Edward Norton's character who is doing the narration and so therefor we're watching the story unfold from the perspective of someone who is obviously crazy. Every person in this film is crazy in one way or another. Much like Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Fight Club shows a world devoid of any sort of normal thoughts of any kind, whether independent or not. What makes the film so bizarre is the fact the thoughts of the main character make sense in the sense that they have rationale to them. However, this is also how the film's humor comes through. The physical appearance of the main character slowly grows worse and worse while the characters around his grow more self-aware, more open-minded, and more like he was at one time. What makes this so funny is the fact that acts and methods these characters use to make themselves happier are so completely irrational and ridiculous that only a fool could ever take it seriously. Not to ruin the plot, but when it comes to illegal acts of vandalism involving public property being destroyed, there comes a point where politics don't seem so important in retrospect since we live in such an interesting and advanced time in the world today.

Looking at this film ten years later, it still has just as much power as it did in 1999 or 2000 or whenever it was when people decided to start watching it. As I said before, David Fincher is a technical talent. His films often hold an incredible amount of visual energy, and Fight Club is no different. The performances are excellent. Edward Norton's performance here is one of his best, as is Helena Bonham Carter. As for Brad Pitt, he does exactly what the role requires from him and kudos to his for being such a good sport for being in this film. I definitely wouldn't call this his best performance. He is required to act in a sub-conscious way that feels full of self-deprecation, and this shouldn't be all that hard for any good actor as long as they are a good sport and they aren't afraid of looking stupid. I prefer his roles in films like 12 Monkeys in which he plays much more deeply troubling and complicated characters. The music in this film works equally as well. It's very dirty, industrial, and overbearing, much like the film itself. However, it is, at times, heavy to the point of absurdity, so it also helps with the humor of the film too. The film just has a tremendous spirit, though I can't say that I actually enjoy watching it. It's full of blood and guts from beginning to end, though it doesn't exactly have a high bodycount. It's often very ugly to look at, which I don't mind except when it gets to the point where it makes the film feel a little too dirty in that way that makes you want to shower. This is also a very very homoerotic film, not just in the fight scenes but also in the way the male characters act around and toward each other. Their mannerisms, as well as their quick little quirks and playful flirtations, get pretty weird after a while. It's about as homoerotic a film as Interview With the Vampire. I can't say that I'm anywhere near as infatuated with it as I was when I was in high school, where any film that tried new things seemed revolutionary and brilliant, and just as well, this film makes it very difficult to take Brad Pitt seriously in most of his other films. None of these things where what I originally loved about this film, however, and the film itself still works great as a comedy. The fight scenes in this film are also excellently choreographed and the gore effects in these scenes are wonderfully done. The final shot of the film may, at once, be considered by some to be an amazing and rebellious shot, but I laugh just thinking about it due to another very brief image in one frame of the shot that occurs just as the credits are appearing.

So overall, Fight Club is still an entertaining film. It's funny, it's dark, and it provides a very honest depiction of mental illness that very few films have the balls to explore. Would I recommend it to everyone? Definitely not. I will say that it's most worthwhile audience would be people who are interested in films about insanity. It's one of the best ones you'll find, or at least one of the best ones that was released in the past couple of decades. The film has developed a strange cult following, reminiscent of the cult audience surrounding American Psycho. These people seem to feel that these two films contain deep philosophical messages about the nature of humanity, but they definitely don't. Sure, there's a lot going on in both of these films, and the characters may have a fascinating level of detail to them, but that does not mean that these films don't offer more than good entertainment and some ideas to think about. I don't think the characters in Fight Club should be taken seriously and I'm astounded that anyone even could take them seriously. It's like saying that Sonny in Dog Day Afternoon was right to rob the bank and that the police were all wrong. Both sides made mistakes and both sides learned things, but that doesn't change the finale of the film. If you're going to watch Fight Club, please don't try to watch it with an open-mind about the characters and the things that they say. Watch it knowing everything that you know now about politics, science, religion, and humanity. I'm sure that the film will have the desired effect on you.

Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) Overview

"'Fight Club' pulls you in, challenges your prejudices, rocks your world and leaves you laughing" (Rolling Stone). Brad Pitt ("12 Monkeys", "Seven"), Edward Norton ("Primal Fear," "American History X") and Helena Bonham Carter ("Mighty Aphrodite," "A Room With A View") turn in powerful "performances of which movie legends are made" (Chicago Tribune) in this action-packed hit. A ticking-time-bomb insomniac (Norton) and a slippery soap salesman (Pitt) channel primal male aggression into a shocking new form of therapy. Their concept catches on, with underground "fight clubs" forming in every town, until a sensuous eccentric (Bonham Carter) gets in the way and ignites an out-of control spiral toward oblivion.

Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) Specifications

All films take a certain suspension of disbelief. Fight Club takes perhaps more than others, but if you're willing to let yourself get caught up in the anarchy, this film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is a modern-day morality play warning of the decay of society. Edward Norton is the unnamed protagonist, a man going through life on cruise control, feeling nothing. To fill his hours, he begins attending support groups and 12-step meetings. True, he isn't actually afflicted with the problems, but he finds solace in the groups. This is destroyed, however, when he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), also faking her way through groups. Spiraling back into insomnia, Norton finds his life is changed once again, by a chance encounter with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), whose forthright style and no-nonsense way of taking what he wants appeal to our narrator. Tyler and the protagonist find a new way to feel release: they fight. They fight each other, and then as others are attracted to their ways, they fight the men who come to join their newly formed Fight Club. Marla begins a destructive affair with Tyler, and things fly out of control, as Fight Club grows into a nationwide fascist group that escapes the protagonist's control.

Fight Club, directed by David Fincher (Seven), is not for the faint of heart; the violence is no holds barred. But the film is captivating and beautifully shot, with some thought-provoking ideas. Pitt and Norton are an unbeatable duo, and the film has some surprisingly humorous moments. The film leaves you with a sense of profound discomfort and a desire to see it again, if for no other reason than to just to take it all in. --Jenny Brown

Catch That Kid

Catch That Kid Review

13-year-old Maddy (Kristen Stewart) is a devoted climber of anything high enough to pose a challenge--perhaps a normal hobby, considering that her father (Sam Robards) climbed Mount Everest some years ago. Her two best friends are Gus (Max Thieriot), a mechanic who can make go-karts do things they're not intended for, and Austin (Corbin Bleu), a computer whiz and would-be filmmaker. Gus's big brother Brad (Stark Sands) calls them all losers, but he has no idea how wrong he is. When an old Everest injury flares up and leaves Maddy's father paralyzed, and her mother (Jennifer Beals) is unable to float a loan for experimental treatment in Europe, Maddy makes up her mind to steal the required 0,000 ("We'll pay it back," she insists) from the bank whose automated security system Molly has recently designed, and Gus and Austin promptly offer to help. With the use of clever high-tech devices, go-karts, and addy's climbing gear, they mount their assault--and, possibly because they're too young to really know how impossible such a job is, they even succeed, after enough close calls to keep viewers of all ages on the edge of their seats. There's also a delightful surprise ending that ties everything up perfectly (no, you'll have to watch the movie--I'm not telling!). Michael des Barres as Brisbane, the president of the despoiled bank, will remind older watchers of Roddy McDowall in some of his slimier roles. Viewers of the Spy Kids trilogy should find this fast-moving YA adventure exactly to their taste, and adults can enjoy it just as much as their kids can.

Matando Cabos

Matando Cabos Review

If you like comedies with memorable characters like "Snatch", you'll enjoy Matando Cabos. While it's not as brilliant as a Coen Brothers black comedy, it's still a totally entertaining movie.

Alejandro Lozano effectively takes a page from Quentin Tarantino's playbook by throwing in plenty of funny dialogue that's completely unrelated to the plot itself. I caught Mexico's MTV Movie Awards in 2006, and remember this film winning "Favorite movie", "Favorite Actor", and even the "Most Bizarre Sex Scene."

If you like violent black comedies with plenty of interesting characters, flashbacks and fantasy sequences, by all means add this Mexican film to your collection.

Down Among the Z Men

Down Among the Z Men Review

There's lots of reasons to like this DVD. First, there's the price. Second, there's several lovely moments with Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers. Third, we get to see Spike play a few moments of jazz trumpet. Fourth, we get jazz strumpet -- or rather the next best thing, the lovely dancing Topper Girls. They were excellent. Fifth, did I mention the price? This is really a light variety show, BBC-TV 1950s style. There's a very lose plot that connects events -- but let's not worry about that. The Goons certainly didn't. Michael Bentine is not that funny. But he does try. He certainly tries me. Oh and sixth, it comes in a cardboard sleeve, so the DVD won't take up much space on your shelf. I found the whole thing charming, and I'm happy to have this historical artefact featuring some of two of my favourite comedians.

Down Among the Z Men Overview

Studio: Genius Products Inc Release Date: 08/24/2004

Down Among the Z Men Specifications

Although they made their name in the medium of radio, the legendary Goons also made brief forays into the world of television and, with Down Among the Z Men, film. Z Men captures the team at a very early stage in their career, with Michael Bentine still in the fold, and with their unique, anarchic brand of humor still in its infancy. Sadly, the style and feel of the film does little to suit their comedy style. While radio offered an opportunity for their imaginations to run wild, here the four find themselves tied to a few stock characters, most of whom would make more animated appearances later in their career. The plot--with its tale of eccentric professors and evil spies--sees a series of musical numbers and a variety performance crowbarred into the proceedings. Those who wish to add to an already existing Goons collection may want to consider this, but anyone wondering what all the fuss is about should look to one of the radio collections to hear the sound of true genius at work. --Phil Udell

A Good Night to Die

A Good Night to Die Review

I saw this film when it showed at the Tribeca Film Festival, and I was blown away (pun intended) by the acting, the story, and especially the way it depicted New York City. I had to run out and order the DVD for my permanent collection. Michael Rapaport and this Gary Stretch guy were fantastic and sympathetic as two killers for hire on a collision course with mob bosses, other hit men and each other. Ralph Macchio, Ally Sheedy, Blondie, the lady from Big Fat Greek Wedding and that old guy who's in everything, round out a great ensemble cast. Oh yeah, and I think that was Robin Givens as the girlfriend! If you're into exciting gritty thrillers like Chinatown, Goodfellas, the French Connection or tarantino films, you should order this DVD.

High Life

High Life Review

It's 1983, and Bug has just been released from prison. Bug meets up with his friend and former cellmate Dick, who is working as part of the cleaning crew at a hospital and it's Dick's first on-the-books job, and it provides him with a steady paycheck as well as an opportunity to steal drugs to feed his appetite for opiates. Thanks to Bug, Dick is quickly fired, but Bug soon gets an idea for a quick and lucrative score. Timothy Olyphant has the part of "Dick," reluctant leader of a hapless group of junkie bank robbers, down to perfection and Rossif Sutherland plays the likable Billy with goofy enthusiasm and a wide smile that refuses to go away no matter how much things go wrong. Even the soundtrack in this movie adds to the story without dominating it, and Gary Yates ends up with a black comedic heist caper movie that is very good. It's a fun and often unpredictable ride that provided plenty of chuckles right until the end.

High Life Feature

High Life Overview

With thrilling action, wickedly funny humor and an addictive soundtrack, HIGH LIFE carries on the tradition of the Coen Brothers and Quentin Tarantino! Timothy Olyphant (Live Free or Die Hard, HBO’s Deadwood) leads a motley crew of brain-fried losers, including a hypochondriac pickpocket (Joe Anderson, Across the Universe), an eternally optimistic charmer (Rossif Sutherland, Poor Boy’s Game) and a trigger-happy thug (Stephen Eric McIntyre, TV’s Falcon Beach). They attempt to stage a bank heist, but when it doesn’t go off as planned, all hell breaks loose.

You're in the Navy Now (Sen)

You're in the Navy Now (Sen) Review

I actually saw this at a drive-in movie with my family when I was a child. As I grew into a film aficianado (and an adult) I would remember films I had seen as a child and look to buy them so I could relive the enjoyment they had given me as a child. Unfortunately, I was disappointed many times when watching those movies that had impressed me as a child. This is not one of those movies. I mean we're not talking Academy Awards here but this was a very amusing movie. I've always thought that Gary Cooper was a great comedic actor and he came through here. I would recommend this movie to anyone wanting to laugh a little and just enjoy a good story.

You're in the Navy Now (Sen) Overview

Oscar®-nominated Director Henry Hathaway (1935: Lives of a Bengal Lancer) enlisted an all-star cast, headed by Gary Cooper in a ?smash performance? (The Hollywood Reporter), for You?re in the Navy Now, a hilarious, critically-acclaimed comedy that also features memorable performances by Jane Greer (Out of the Past), Eddie Albert (Roman Holiday) and Jack Webb (Sunset Boulevard)!

Based on the Navy?s real-life experiment with a steam engine in a WWII submarine chaser, the film follows the misadventures of the ill-prepared crew of a ship on trial runs. Led by a captain (Cooper) who is as inexperienced as his officers ? they don?t call them the ?90-day wonders? for nothing! ? they sail out to sea on an unforgettable journey. They?ll either sink or swim?but they?ll make history either way!

DishDogz

DishDogz Review

The Movie Gallery here only had one copy of the DVD. I would have thought that kind of movie would have a lot of appeal to the younger audiences of skateboarders. Come one guys!

We all really liked DishDogz because it did not have cursing or killing or anything like that. Michelle Lombardo (she was the swimsuit model in the film) was easy on the eyes to say the least.

Haylie Duff plays a really sweet girl. She does a really good job here with this part. She also plays in Backwoods, Legacy, Material Girls, and more! :)

Luke Perry must not be used to being the "old guy" in a movie but he did it well. Laid back and cool without being out of it.

Marshall Allman did a really good job as the outsider trying to fit in. I specially liked Tim DePriest as Malone. Every movie needs a guy full of himself that gets his at the end. Without a bad guy, you cannot have a good guy. Tim played the part well as a skateboard snob who is so impressed with himself that he cannot be charming and so we do not feel bad for what happens to him.

I think everyone will like the Dish Dogz. They pull pranks on each other without being mean. Way to go guys! And the camp counselor was just perfect for the part. Haven't you seen guys like that? Well done!

The camera work on the stunts was great! The location was awesome!

It is a predictable movie but still very enjoyable!

DishDogz Overview

When Kevin looks for a way to escape his backbreaking summer job, he enlists in the kitchen at an extreme summer camp with the hopes of spending his breaks on the half-pipe. But Kevin gets more than he bargained for when he teams up with his fellow extreme skateboarder dishwashers, The Dishdogz. He'll have to be more radical than the competition and win the heart of the girl (Haylie Duff) if he's going to keep up with his new crew. But before he does, he'll have to get all his work done, if he's to avoid a thrashing from his surly boss Tony (Luke Perry), who's hiding a secret that's truly old school. Along with the talent of real-life skateboarders Tony Alva, Ryan Sheckler and Andy MacDonald, don't miss your chance to jump on board with the Dishdogz.

Batman - Return to the Batcave

Batman - Return to the Batcave Review

While I did watch the Batman show as a kid (in reruns, not prime time)it wasn't my favorite. I've come to appreciate it more as I've grown older and actually get the jokes. Then I was just watching as a child, strictly for the plot.

The casting of the young Burt and Adam was perfect. I believed that this was the way it could have happened. The tone is the same as in the series.

I like to believe that Adam West and Burt Ward, despite the tabloid fodder they were from time to time, are nice people, enjoyed doing the show, and look back fondly on it.

It's a lot of fun. It zips along with no slow spots. I would not recommend it to someone who didn't watch and like the old series (or the movie). Only a person who has enjoyed that could appreciate and enjoy this.

Seeing Lyle Waggoner's screen test was really interesting and gave me an idea of how it could have been if other choices had been made. Waggoner's voice over narration in places is a delight and yet another in joke.

The movie is not an apology for the show but a celebration of it. Think about this: Could this show be made today? We're far too cynical to relax this much. Before our collective loss of innocence we could believe that good guys were good and bad guys were bad. No longer, sadly.

Now, Casablanca it ain't, but if you can relax enough to enjoy a little silliness then buy or at least rent Return To The Batcave.

Watch Out, We're Mad

Watch Out, We're Mad Review

Why can we not get good prints of these little low budget off-shore commercial films?

That said - Im glad for what we do have. This film is damn funny and very clever.
The two leads Hill and Spencer are great - the bad guys are not bad either and the whole things is funny from start to finish.
Other then the "Trinity is Still My Name" this must be next best and funniest of the Hill Spencer films.

Plot - a couple of ham-bone near do wells want their dune buggy back which was destroyed by the local gangster. That gangster just happens to have as his therapist and counselor none other then the Freudian Donald Pleasants. Its will written with a combination of none stop jokes, action and fist fights from start to finish with a little romantic interest for good measure. All unpretentious and very much fun - what more can you ask for? Four stars here - but would give an extra for a better wide-screen print and sound.

Watch Out, We're Mad Overview

Fantastic fight and chase sequences with the world's best-loved he-men, Terence Hill and Bud Spencer! When a local gang of crooks smash their dune buggies, Terence and Bud, fight like hell and create a mirthquake as they seek the pleasure of revenge - not

48 Hours

48 Hours Review

Electrifying, funny and tantalising glimpse of what America could and should have been all about as Nolte's gruff 70s cop clashes with Murphy's brash 80s convict to create one of the most tasty, refreshing and light-hearted slices of Americana ever made. Often imitated, never even remotely equalled.

Think Mean Streets meets Beverly Hills Cop meets Midnight Cowboy meets The Electric Horseman meets Miami Vice and you are starting to get the picture. It's funny, it's dark, it's dirty, it's warm, it's edgy, it's violent - it is just so plain rude and disarmingly honest you can't help but have a great time.

Action Movie, Cops and Robbers, Comedy, Buddy Film, Pop-Cultural Snapshot, Cinematic Breakthrough In Race Relations - why have one, when you can have them all? I just loved it, from the opening shots of the horses right through to the neon-drizzled climax in the alley - pure fun all the way.

The sequel is not quite as crisp, but shoehorns perfectly onto the back of this one allowing us to continue the ride with Nick and Eddie right through the 80s and into the early 90s. Bookend the two films and you pretty much have a time-capsule summary of American pop culture 1969-1994.

What more do you want? Buy on DVD, enjoy and treasure!

48 Hours Overview

Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy make one of the most unusual and entertaining teams ever in Walter Hill's rollercoaster thriller 48 Hrs. Nolte is a rough-edged cop after two vicious cop-killers. He can't do it without the help of smooth and dapper Murphy who is serving time for a half-million dollar robbery. This unlikely partnership trades laughs as often as punches as both pursue their separate goals: Nolte wants the villains; Murphy wants his money and some much-needed female companionship. Together they take this adventure to hilarious extremes!System Requirements:Running Time: 96 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY/CRIMINALS UPC: 097361377841 Manufacturer No: 137784

48 Hours Specifications

Before the action-oriented "buddy movie" formula settled into place in the 1980s and 1990s with the Lethal Weapon films, Walter Hill's 48 HRS. presented a much more irreverent and politically incorrect version of the genre. Eddie Murphy made an auspicious film debut alongside veteran Nick Nolte's consummate performance as a worn cop. Murphy plays a convict on a two-day furlough from prison to help capture his former partner (James Remar). The intense animosity between his character and Nolte's impatient detective is rude and violent--albeit in a comic way--and the film's racist and sexist banter is so ubiquitous that some viewers might be turned off. (This early, raw Murphy is not the Murphy of The Nutty Professor.) Then again, sometimes deliberate overkill is funny in itself, which is certainly closer to Hill's intention. There are a couple of scenes for the ages in this film, especially Murphy's single-handed shutdown of the action in a redneck bar. --Tom Keogh

Feeling Minnesota

Feeling Minnesota Review

I'm not a K. Reeves fan so I was hesitant about seeing the dvd. However I like the other actors and took a chance. I like the interaction between Reeves and Diaz and D'Onofrio. They were able to elevate his performance and make an enjoyable small movie. Sam (D'Onofrio) works as a mob accountant and Freddie(Diaz) who owes them moeny is forced to marry him. On her wedding day she meets Sam's brother jjaks (Reeves) and hooks up with him. There are several twist and turns, but it more a study of some losers and how they ry to work themselves out of dilemmas. Sam is goofy, but he is also unpredictible and violent. jjaks tries to save freddie but he also has some loyalty to his brother. A think plot but at least the characters are original.

Feeling Minnesota Overview

Just when she met the man of her dreams along came her husband to ruin everything. Studio: New Line Home Video Release Date: 02/03/2004 Starring: Keanu Reeves Vincent Donofrio Run time: 99 minutes Rating: R Director: Steven Baigelman

Feeling Minnesota Specifications

In his debut effort, director/writer Steven Baigleman put together an interesting premise and collected a talented cast to execute it. Unfortunately, he never sets the tone, so we are caught between a wildly black comedy and an emotionally brutal drama. A firmer footing in either genre would have better defined our reactions to it. Keanu Reeves plays Jjaks, a man so badly trod upon by fate that his very name is the result of a typo. He arrives back at his mother's house in a lower working-class Minnesota neighborhood to witness the marriage of his older brother (Vincent D'Onofrio) to an obviously reluctant bride (Cameron Diaz). By the time Jjaks is on his way, he's stolen a car, a dog, and his brother's wife. You have to give Baigleman credit for serving up intriguing characters. Unfortunately, he spins the story in circles instead of moving it along. Reeves and Diaz attempt to leave Minnesota, but never quite make it. Reeves repeatedly returns to a boyhood home he hates, always stumbling into his brother's angry clutches. What does work are the performances. Diaz is both sad and strong as the tough cookie who happens to be the smartest character in the movie. D'Onofrio's stupid nastiness is offset by his crushing love for her and an uncontrollable jealousy of Jjaks. Most surprising is Reeves, who makes us feel for his angry, unhappy loser by revealing flashes of decency under a toughened exterior. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Alain Delon - Five Film Collection (The Widow Couderc / Diabolically Yours / La Piscine / Le Gitan / Notre Histoire)

Alain Delon - Five Film Collection (The Widow Couderc / Diabolically Yours / La Piscine / Le Gitan / Notre Histoire) Review

This is a very good collection of the less well known works of Alain Delon. And it includes The Swimming Pool with Romy Schneider & Jane Birkin. But like any collected works, if you are not a Delon fan it may be hard going for some. I think he is a terrific screen actor and the five films in this collection add to his repertoire of, say, the hero as outsider...Delon has an interiority totally unique & compelling. He's fabulous to watch! Voila.

Black Books - The Complete First Series

Black Books - The Complete First Series Review

Going into the bookselling world, I didn't know what to expect. I haphazardly searched for a guide that would best instruct me on the ways of customer service, marketing, and security. Whilst several video's failed, I knew that I could rely on the help of the BBC to fill the void. Thankfully, those islanders came through with a short series (only three seasons) entitled Black Books in which we are taken out of the office environment (aka the original Office) and into the small-box world of bookselling. The job is simple, sell the books, make the consumers happy, and leave a happy man at the end of the night. That would seem simple enough unless your names are Bernard Black or Manny Bianco, the ill-fated employees of this independent bookstore. Their hobbies include getting smashed off wine, smoking till their blue in the face, and avoiding actual conversations with those that patron their store. They are the direct opposite of what you would expect in your typical American bookstore. They are crass, they are cruel, they are drunk - but, most importantly, they are genuinely funny. While this wasn't as phenomenal as The Office, it did provide some great laughs, some Python-esque moments (we can all recite the words to "Bookshop" can't we?), and a great reason to enjoy the world of customer service.

This first season introduces us to the beginnings of a relationship like those we can only see in the movies, like Pitt and Jolie or Cruise and Holms, there will always be a Bernard and Manny. In the first episode, we learn how they meet and how the two decide to be working companions, and well, even more in further episodes. We see our duo become a set of triplets with the introduction to the "girl next door" Fran Katzenjammer (played by Tamsin Greig) who seems to carry the same philosophy with her that the two shopkeepers do as well. She understands their need for booze, insults, and disgruntled nature, and in fact, she feeds it further. Through the course of the first season, we go from a struggling bookshop, to a friendship, to a need for security, to a snub, all the way to helping a friend by house sitting overnight and sampling his wine. The opportunities seem to mimic the humor in this program - it is endless. The chemistry between the characters is superb as well as the ideas generated by creator Dylan Morgan. The timing is fantastic, providing the viewer with a combination punch of both slapstick and verbal routines.

This was a great show to view, but alas, it is only once that I could find myself sitting through it. I don't mean to change the tables on this review, because I did love what this program offered in the form of obscenely funny retail sales moments, but what started out strongly eventually lost the speed it began with. The first four episodes came out of the gate rather strongly, instituting laughs and originality with character driven scenes and relatable humor, but then with the latter part of episode five and especially episode six (where it seemed to fall into the Chef scenario of getting too much money per episode), we seemed to change gears suddenly. It is extremely noticeable with the final episode entitled, "He's Leaving Home". It was up until this moment that I thought this would have been worth purchasing, but this singular episode soured the entire experience for me. It also lead me into a hesitant viewing of the second season. I would like to restate that I loved so much about this series, but the dramatic change in appearance with the final episodes leaves me with just a regular taste in my mouth.

Overall, Black Books, the first season, is definitely worth a viewing. There is so much to appreciate and enjoy with the characters, stories, and environment that I am surprised it didn't pick up as much "cult" rave as say, The Office did in the states. Bernard Black is hysterical with his drunken raves and slanderish remarks - he will truly inspire anyone that spends time in the retail sector of our great nation. Manny is the perfect patsy with phenomenal facial expressions and an ability to control the physical humor. Manny and Bernard was a great pairing, while Fran seemed to be the anchor between the two. Again, I cannot state that I loved the characters in this series, it just seemed to take a dramatically different course by the end of the first season - a direction I didn't think was one that fit the already standard mold. I would suggest this first season to those that enjoyed Little Britain or The Office, but don't think it deserves any more than a singular viewing.

Grade: **** out of *****

Black Books - The Complete First Series Feature

Black Books - The Complete First Series Overview

Black Books is a second-hand bookshop in London run by an Irishman named Bernard Black. He is probably the planet's worst-suited person to run such an establishment: he makes no effort to sell, closes at strange hours on a whim, is in a perpetual alcoholic stupor, abhors his customers (sometimes physically abusing them) and is often comatose at his desk. Help comes in the lumpy shape of Manny Bianco, a hairy, bumbling individual who (almost by osmosis) becomes Bernard's assistant. Manny is not exactly great at the job either but he is a million times better than Bernard. Next door is Fran, an anxious, frustrated woman who runs a sort of new-age shop selling the most unlikely bits of arty junk. Fran is friends with Bernard and, through him, with Manny; together the trio become embroiled in escapades that are sometimes extreme or violent or fantastically ludicrous, and always bizarre.

Black Books - The Complete First Series Specifications

How can the concept of a drunk owning a bookshop be surreally funny? Well, Black Books may be owned by Bernard Black on screen, but off screen it belongs to writer-director Graham Linehan of Father Ted fame, that’s how. His writing partnership with Dylan Moran (Black) produced the strangest situation comedy of 2001, fully deserving its British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award. The almost blissfully vague plotline begins when stressed-out office worker Manny Bianco (Bill Bailey) accidentally swallows The Little Book of Calm. Somehow his beard and Bernard's booze get on well enough for them to work together in the shop. They're ably assisted/distracted/confused by the hormonal interruptions of neighboring storeowner Fran (Tamsin Greig). And that’s about it. But across six episodes, this first year crammed in an enormous amount of insanity and sight gags. Definite highlights include Fran's over-the-radio seduction by Shipping News broadcaster Howell Granger, a good cop/bad cop Sweeney spoof and a cameo by Nick Frost (Mike in Spaced) as a more than slightly over-the-top security system installer. The standout episode is "The Grapes of Wrath," in which Bernard and Manny agree to babysit a valuable wine cellar. No prizes for guessing what happens! Kevin Eldon guest stars as The Cleaner, declaring the shop to be "dirty." Manny already knew that. When he made the appointment he had to confess, "Right now I'm eating scrambled egg with a comb out of a shoe." --Paul Tonks

Frankie & Annette MGM Movie Legends Collection (Beach Blanket Bingo / How to Stuff a Wild Bikini / Beach Party / Bikini Beach / Fireball 500 / Thunder Alley / Muscle Beach Party / Ski Party) Review

I got my collection in the mail and I love these movies.I'm a baby boomer and I remember watching these films when I was a kid.
I'm a guy and I love the Gidget and Tammy movies, they were geared towards girls, and the Beach Party movies were geared towards guys, but anyone can love these movies. The prints are very good.some better than others. My only 2 beefs are that they did not include Pajama Party in this set. They could have taken out Thunder Alley and put that in. I like Thunder Alley I just feel Pajama Party would have been a better fit. I bought Pajama Party by it self so I could have a complete collection. My other beef is minor. There is a misprint on the disk that has Ski Party. It states that Ski Party is Standard instead of Widescreen. Ski Party is in fact widescreen on the disk.
It also states that Ski Party is widescreen on the back of its case, so I don't know how that one on the disk slipped by, but as long as it is widescreen I'm happy.

Frankie & Annette MGM Movie Legends Collection (Beach Blanket Bingo / How to Stuff a Wild Bikini / Beach Party / Bikini Beach / Fireball 500 / Thunder Alley / Muscle Beach Party / Ski Party) Specifications

The sun will never set on Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, The recording star from Philadelphia and the former Mouseketeer give a master class in chemistry in five Beach Party films that make up the bulk of this swinging eight-film box set. Beach Party (1963) helped to usher in a new wave of teen exploitation films that were far more fun and frolicsome than the rock and roll and juvenile delinquent films that preceded it. Frankie rents a beach house for himself and Annette's Dolores. He is stunned to learn that she has gotten cold feet and allowed the whole gang to hang out there. So Frankie decides to "dig somebody else," and Delores takes up with Robert Cummings, an anthropologist studying the sex lives of teens. All ends happily, and chastely. Harvey Lembeck, whose credits include Billy Wilder's Stalag 17, introduced his recurring series role as bumbling biker Eric Von Zipper. Surf guitar god Dick Dale provides accompaniment. Vincent Price pops up as Big Daddy to say, "Bring me my pendulum, kiddies. I feel like swinging." Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) is the magnum Party opus as Frankie goes sky-diving, Bonehead (Jody McCrea) falls in love with a mermaid, Linda Evans sings, Paul Lynde is snide, Don Rickles insults, and Frankie and Annette sing their classic, "I Think, You Think." Bikini Beach (1964) takes a swipe at the upstart Beatles with Frankie in a dual role as British pop star Potato Bug. Muscle Beach Party (1964) was Stevie Wonder's first film, and Peter Lorre's last.

How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965) marks the end of an era, with Frankie, off in the Naval Reserves, getting help from witch doctor Buster Keaton in keeping interloper Dwayne Hickman away from Annette. Annette's absence is keenly felt in Ski Party, but James Brown performs, "I Feel Good" and Lesley Gore sings her top-40 hit, "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows." Frankie and Annette were reunited at the racetrack in Fireball 500 (1966), but Fabian is a third wheel as a rival for Annette. Thunder Alley (1967) (from Richard Rush, director of the cult classic, The Stunt Man), is another car-racing vehicle that pairs Annette and Fabian, but by now the thrill is gone. Frankie and Annette are as indelible a screen couple and as inseparable in the public's imagination as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers or Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. What is the secret to their enduring appeal? The last line of Back to the Beach (1987), an unsung gem unfortunately not included in this set, sums it up. Frankie and Annette walk together along the beach for the last time. Frankie turns to the camera and asks, "Are we the corniest couple in the world, or what?" --Donald Liebenson

Thunderbirds

Thunderbirds Review

I never had a chance to watch the original series, puppets seemed a little creepy to me. That being said I loved this movie. Yes there were moments as other have described as corny but I like that about this movie. I like the family dynamic and the actors as well. So what that there were previous movies done with themes of children being the heroes but I like that. I likes all those movies they were fun to watch. It makes the movie more childish and goofy which is a recipe of fun at least for me. Definately watch this movie it is cute. Unlike a lot of movies I like out there if I have kids someday this is a movie I can definatley watch with them and enjoy.

Thunderbirds Overview

Former astronaut Jeff Tracy and his family operate International Rescue, a secret private emergency response service.
Genre: Feature Film Family
Rating: PG
Release Date: 26-DEC-2005
Media Type: DVD

Thunderbirds Specifications

The deep love that young boys feel for planes, cars, and gadgets is the driving energy of Thunderbirds, a live-action movie based on the British puppet TV show of the 1960s. Bill Paxton (Near Dark, One False Move) plays Jeff Tracy, billionaire ex-astronaut, who's turned his family of heroic sons into a crack rescue squad, zooming to danger and saving people using super-sophisticated vehicles. The youngest boy (Brady Corbet) hasn't yet joined the team and resents every moment he's not in uniform--but he gets his chance when a malevolent villain called the Hood (Ben Kingsley, slumming a bit from Gandhi and Sexy Beast) traps the rest of the family on a crippled space station and turns the Thunderbird vehicles to his evil purposes. Expect bright colors, clumsy dialogue, and a less-than-thrilling plot, but many kids will enjoy the fantasy of a secret island, rocket ships, and flying cars. --Bret Fetzer

The only snag? They'll be destroying existence in the process. In an effort to stop them, The overworked Voice of God (Alan Rickman)taps cynical mortal Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) to save the world by preventing the angels from reaching their unholy destination: New Jersey! Judea where the exasperated Romans try to impose order, it is a time of chaos and change with no shortage of messiahs and followers willing to believe them. At it's center is Brian Cohen, born in Bethlehem in a stable next door, who, by a series of absurd circumstances is caught up in the new religion and reluctantly mistake for the promised messiah, providing ample opportunity for the entire ensemble (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin) to shine in multiple roles as they question everyone and everything from ex-lepers, Pontius Pilate and haggling to revolutionaries, crazy prophets, religious fanaticism, Roman centurions and crucifixion, forever changing our biblical view.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse
After narrowly escaping the horrors of the underground Hive facility, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is quickly thrust back into a war raging above ground between the living and the Undead. As the city is locked down under quarantine, Alice joins a small band of elite soldiers, led by Valentine (Sienna Guillory, Love, Actually) and Carlos (Oded Fehr, The Mummy Returns), enlisted to rescue the missing daughter of Dr. Ashford, the creator of the mutating T-virus. It's a heart-pounding race against time as the group faces off against hordes of blood- thirsty zombies, stealthy Lickers, mutant canines and the most sinister foe yet.

The Fifth Element New York cab driver Korben Dallas didn't mean to be a hero, but he just picked up the kind of fare that only comes along every five thousand years: A perfect beauty, a perfect being, a perfect weapon. Now, together, they must save the world. Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman star in acclaimed director Luc Besson's outrageous sci-fi adventure, an extravagantly styled tale of good against evil set in an unbelievable twenty-third century world.

Bad Taste (Limited Edition)

Bad Taste (Limited Edition) Review

It seems strange that a New Zealand town has been invaded by hungry alien intruders and some of the poulation has been disappearing like rabbits. They disguise themselves as regular humans to not look suspicious but the New Zealand government hires a team of exterminators such as Ozzy (Terry Potter), Barry (Peter O'Herne), Frank (Mike Minette) and Derek (Peter Jackson) to investigate. They discover the aliens's plan on using human flesh for the latest in their intergalactic fast-food chain business but can the bumbling team save the human race or will they end up as lunch?

Sick, twisted and hilarious Science Fiction horror action comedy from writer and director Peter Jackson made one hell of a debut here. Before he did "Lord of the Rings", "King Kong", "Dead Alive", "Meet The Feebles" and "Heavenly Creatures" he made this New Zealand production which was became an independent sensation in that country to now in the US thanks to video, midnight theater showings and DVD. What works here is that the humor is absolutely morbid from aliens drinking vomit to the hilarious exploding sheep sequence and the storyline is very good as well. Yes the acting is bad but what can you expect from a b-movie? it has that feel of Troma and Herschell Gordon Lewis combined here and some crowdpleasing gore scenes such as headings exploding, brains splattering, cannibalism, dimsemberment and everything but the kitchen sink. This film is not for the squeamish or everyone but for those with a taste of dark comedy with Sci-fi and horror thrown in it, i recommend this.

This 2-Disc Limited Edition DVD contains beautiful picture and sound in a great THX-remastered widescreen edition with only three extras such as a 25 minute featurette, trailer and bio.

Bad Taste (Limited Edition) Overview

Could a title be any more direct? New Zealand maverick Peter Jackson made a splash (well, more of a splatter) with this film debut, a slapstick gross-out comedy about an alien fast-food franchise that turns a small town into a cheap source of meat. All that stands in the extraterrestrials' way is the Alien Investigation Defense Service (yes, it's a tasteless gag), a bunch of would-be Rambos who take on the aliens with axes, rocket launchers, and chainsaws. Jackson mines vomit jokes, dismembered corpses, and brain-spattering gore for over-the-top laughs and succeeds with inventive low-budget effects, crack timing, and sheer exuberance. Not bad for a film made on weekends with homemade props and a bunch of energetic mates. Jackson topped himself a few years later with the even more outrageous and hilarious bloody gut-buster Dead Alive.

The limited-edition two-disc set also includes the documentary featurette "Good Taste Made Bad Taste," a revealing "making of" shot at the time of production and featuring behind-the-scenes footage of Jackson's home-made special effects, and a 16-page booklet with cast interviews. --Sean Axmaker

Patlabor - The Mobile Police The TV Series (Vol.1)

Patlabor - The Mobile Police The TV Series (Vol.1) Review

If you have had a chance to see the Patlabor theatrical features, you should definitely check out the series in order to better understand what the fuss is all about. Patlabor didn't get the recognition it deserved in North American over other worthy series, because it was not very well promoted and badly represented as a "mecha-action" show. This couldn't be further from the truth of what this program had to offer. The movies, while technically brilliant, were more about the ideas and less about what made the show so popluar overseas, namely storytelling and character development. Shows such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Dominion, even Love Hina can trace many of their thematic and character development roots back to this wonderful show where mecha takes a back seat to the world which Headgear (the creative group responsible for the show) creates. In a sense, it's real success was in part due to the believability which they lent to the whole giant robot genre by popluating it with regular people who happen to use large machines in everyday life. The basic premise is at the end of the 20th century, newer more efficient construction methods needed to be developed, and robots were employed to fulfill this role. As a result, the number of crimes committed using these robots, or "labors", resulted in the need to create a special detatchment of the police force to deal with labor related crime. This is the premise in which we are introduced to Tokyo's newest section of the Special Vehicles Department and their crew: a crazy mix of personalities. Once you watch the show, there is bound to be at least one character you recognize from your own life, or maybe even yourself. From the regular folks who inhabit the Patlabor environment, to the cops, the construction workers, the media and their pets, everything is included and as the show comes to a close, it forms a wonderful symmetry which is rare on television. The show is the perfect set-up for the more political and philosophical approach of the movies which has been criticized for being boring; but try the series, and you won't be dissapointed. As far as I'm concerned, Patlabor was the last show that had anything interesting to offer with giant robots, and was the final word in the genre.

Patlabor - The Mobile Police The TV Series (Vol.1) Overview

In the not-too-distant future, heavy construction work is performed by giant robots called "Labors"; the robots also get involved in accidents and crimes, so the Tokyo police force needs "Patlabors" (an elision of "Patrol Labors") to keep them in check. Masami Yuuki's Mobile Police Patlabor began as a serial in the Shounen Sunday Comics and was adapted to a seven-part OVA in 1988. The subsequent 47-episode broadcast series proved so popular, additional OVAs and two features followed. The television program has a more upbeat tone than moody features, and despite a slower pace, it retains the freshness and good humor that won it so many fans. Although the heroine of the show is perky Noa Izumi, a young officer determined to succeed as a robot pilot, the stories focus on the interactions of the crew of oddballs who make up Special Vehicles Division 2. Noa's partners include the thoughtful Asuma Shinohara, no-nonsense New York police officer Clancy Kanuka, bigmouth Isao Ota, and understated Captain Goto. This ensemble playing suggests a sci-fi version of Hill Street Blues. Unlike their counterparts in other mecha series, the Patlabor pilots are not always seen as heroic. Captain Goto observes that the robots "have been called everything from jokes to money pits to piles of useless waste," but when a military experiment runs amok or a mutant monster gets loose in a forest, Division 2 is there to save the day. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up; robot versus robot violence. This collection contains the first five episodes: 1. "Ingram Animated," 2. "Kanuka Appears," 3. "Speed Vehicles Department 2," 4. "Goto Demon Mountain!" 5. "Labor X-10, Out of Control!" --Charles Solomon

Delta Farce [Blu-ray]

Delta Farce [Blu-ray] Review

Somewhat of a disappointment to be totally honest. I LOVE Larry the Cable Guy and I think he's one of the best stand up comedians when it comes to unpredictable and tricky jokes. Somehow though, he wasn't particularly funny on Delta Farce. Neither were most of the other characters (except that skinny guy- HE was funny).

Even though the film is a disappointment, I still really loved it because it's just an outrageous style of humor that really cracks me up. It's dumb humor, sure, but it's the kind of laughs that always immediately put me in a good mood.

I'd say Larry's previous movie was better than this one though.

The fact that the bad guy in the movie was called Carlos Santana was the funniest joke of all, haha. I'm a big Santana fan (I LOVE his album Love, Devotion and Surrender that he did with John McLaughlin back in 1972) so any time his name is mentioned makes me happy. Funny how the bad guy would say "I'm Carlos Santana!" and Larry the Cable Guy would go "The singer?" and he'd go "NO, NOT THE SINGER!" haha

The way Larry the Cable Guy and his buddies saved a Mexican town (that they thought was a town in Iraq, LOL) and the way they found water were funny segments. Much of the movie was about Larry and company saving a small Mexican town from a gang of bad guys. They'd save the town and not realize they were doing it, lol. The perfect example of quality humor in my book!

Overall, good movie. I just can't get enough of Larry the Cable Guy!

Delta Farce [Blu-ray] Overview

Down on his luck after losing his job and his girlfriend on the same day, Larry decides to join his neighbor, Bill (Bill Engvall), and his combat-happy buddy, Everett (DJ Qualls), for a relaxing weekend of drinking and target practice. But when the three hapless guys are mistaken for Army Reservists by the hard-nosed Sergeant Kilgore (Keith David), they're loaded onto an army plane headed for Fallujah, Iraq - and mistakenly ejected in a Humvee somewhere over Mexico. Convinced they're actually in the Middle East, the clueless wannabe soldiers save a rural village from a siege of bandits and become local heroes. But when Carlos Santana (Danny Trejo), a ruthless, karaoke-loving warlord, strikes back, Larry, Bill and Everett have to lay down their beers and take up their arms - and prove they just might be real soldiers after all...

Delta Farce [Blu-ray] Specifications

Delta Farce takes its cue from John Kerry's ill-advised 2006 joke to university students that they should get a good education lest they wind up in Iraq. Case in point, Larry (Larry the Cable Guy), Bill (Bill Engvall, Larry's Blue Collar Comedy costar), and Everett (D.J. Qualls, geek first class from RoadTrip), who take respite from their failed relationships, jobs, and lives in their once-a-month stint as "weekend warriors" in the Army Reserve. Delta Farce's one great inspiration was to literally drop these clueless sad sacks into Mexico instead of Fallujah. After much confusion, they become the not-so-magnificent three, helping besieged villagers fend off a gang of bandits led by the dread Carlos Santana (insert your own guitarist jokes). Delta Farce belongs to a mostly proud tradition of morale-building military misfit comedies, but it ranks closer to Ernest in the Army or Pauly Shore's In the Army Now than to Buck Privates or Stripes. Delta Farce, dedicated to "the real men and women" who are serving our country, has no political agenda. It is content to engage in name-calling ("carpet-flyers" and "turds" are two we can print here), broad slapstick, decidedly un-PC ethnic stereotypes and epithets ("retarded" is used as a punchline on several occasions), and the occasional gross-out gag (the always reliable urine-in-a-canteen bit). The usually menacing Danny Trejo (Con Air) steals the film outright (which in this case is petty theft) as the karaoke-singing Carlos. But for Larry the Cable guy fans, and those who miss the sophisticated good ol' boy humor of Smokey and the Bandit (whose theme song is to this movie what Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries" was to Apocalypse Now), Delta Farce may just "git r done." --Donald Liebenson

Trigun Vol. 3 - Wolfwood

Trigun Vol. 3 - Wolfwood Review

This is by far the best installment of Trigun so far; a real treat!

The first episode picks up where the last one left off, as Vash must fight to save a hijacked vessel headed straight for a canyon. This is a pivotal episode, for two reasons: 1) we discover that Vash is not freakishly immortal, as he appeared to be in previous episodes - you will actually be worried this time ; 2) we dive into Vash's past once again, as his reasons for never killing and the haunting silhouette of a woman become more defined.

The second episode marks the appearance of one of the most stylish characters ever: Dr. Nicholas D. Wolfwood, a very unconventional priest who carries around a portable confessional (lol) and one of the coolest weapons I have ever seen. He is Vash's match in every way: class, style, wit, charm and even marksmanship and occasional silliness. He is the only character so far to have any real chemistry with Vash, and together they create some amazing scenes, with a balance of comradeship, friendly antagonism and understanding. There is an absolutely beautiful scene in which Vash, seeing Wolfwood perform an act of kindness, smiles sweetly, and Wolfwood remarks: "So you can smile like that, too. It had me worried. You're always smiling, real friendly, but your smile is so empty it hurts to watch it. You're hurting like crazy and you're hiding it behind that grin."

The third episode gives you a very funny, pseudo-zen glimpse of Vash's everyday routine (you get to see him witout the red coat for the first time), and some more Vash-Wolfwood improvised collaboration. It's impossible not to love those two.

It's definetely darker than before, but it's a change for the better, as the viewer gets more engrossed in the series. And for all the added suspense and drama, there's still enough slapstick to make you laugh out loud. Trigun finds its balance with this volume. That's it, I'm hooked!

Trigun Vol. 3 - Wolfwood Overview

Wolfwood, the man of the cloth with the cross, is also a gunman with a past. Like Vash, Wolfwood travels to find redemption in the desert but continually finds that controntations with one's past can be far more deadly than a duel with pistols. Will these two kindred souls walk the same path or find each other obstacles to survival?

Trigun Vol. 3 - Wolfwood Specifications

"And Between the Wasteland" concludes outlaw Vash the Stampede's adventure aboard a hijacked sandship that began on the previous disc. The orphan Kaite--and insurance inspectors Meryl and Millie--help him outwit B.D. Neon's Bad Lad Gang. The artists hint at Vash's unhappy past when an old song recalls a lost love. The tone shifts to the farcical with the arrival of Nicholas D. Wolfwood, an outrageous, fast-talking priest, who becomes the closest thing to a partner Vash is likely to find. When their bus is attacked in the middle of the desert by a horde of insectlike robots, a child is left behind. Vash and Wolfwood charge to the rescue, shooting robots and swapping repartee like a futuristic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Meryl and Millie are horrified at the potential destruction when Wolfwood enters Vash in a high-stakes marksmanship contest to aid a needy family in "Quick Draw." But both heroes come through--in their fashion. Vash remains an endearing if disaster-prone hero, unsuccessfully pursuing peace and "the mayfly known as love." But Wolfwood echoes the thoughts of both the other characters and the audience when he observes, "When you're around, things always seem to get worse." Rated 13 and up for mild profanity, drinking, and cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Special Edition)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Special Edition) Review

Its hard for me to review this movie as an adult. I was a large fan of the Indiana Jones movie as a child growing up, and this was the only one of the original trilogy that I had the opportunity to see on the big screen, and I loved it. It was very action packed and funny and never really let up. It did capture the imagination of my child mind, but now watching it as an adult I have to say that the reason that it captures your imagination is that none of it is possible. The movie starts with a great introduction of Indiana as a teenager discovering "evil grave robbers" discover a historic cross, wait a second isn't that kinda what indy does his whole life, digging up historical artifacts, because as it is explained "it belongs in a meuseum". It is with such broad stroke morality that the rest of the movie can be told. In the special features it is discussed that this is really the one that Spielberg and Lucas made as a crowd pleaser. The chase ends with a train pursuit where we learn in broad strokes where Indy's fear of snakes comes from and where he originally got his scar. At the end of it, Indy is trapped at a locked kaboose with no way to escape, but wait, there are a lot of items used in a magic act laying about in the car, so Indy goes into a magic box and when the bad guys come in to find him, they open the box that desinigrates but with no trace of Indy. Indy is then scene running outside the car, which by the way opens for the bad guys to better see Indy making his escape. I remember from that era that magic was really popular, and really worked best on film as you could cut it together to make it look however you want, even though we know this is impossible for magic prop to transport indy outside of the car, its an effective film gag that leaves my adult self scratching my head. Indy returns to his house where the police are waiting and take the cross back to the legal and rightful owners, cut to adult Indy, still searching after the cross, where he kills every one of the legal owners to take it back to a meusium. Also notice that the lovable villain that gave Indy his trademark hat isn't on the boat that gets blown up. So we learn about the grail then go to Venice to the most problematic scene of the movie. The sewer made of gas. Indy and his love interest are walking through said moat of petrol with torches that you can see pits of the tourch dropping off and falling still ablaze into the liquid. The defenders of the grail discover Indy is looking for the grail and light the sewer. Indy hides under the coffin that keeps them from burning up, looks underwater, i guess the liquid turned to water, cause gasoline would burn your eyes if you were swimming in it, and finds an exit to swim into the vinice sewer system. Thats right, the petrol sewer under the library connects with the water based venice sewer, nulifying the need to go through the library to begin with, not to mention that the petrol would dilute with the water, and notice how as the defenders of the grail, when leaving the library, are in a dead sprint, as if they know Indy escaped, but its so faced paced, you really aren't supposed to ask questions. I don't understand why Indy is let go after the boat chase. We go to get his father from Austria, and I still don't understand why Indy goes through the window to avoid triggering the door alarm when after he reunites with his father, they leave through said door. I don't see why the plain would go through the tunnel, makes no sense. Also when on the blimp and the funny no ticket line that all the germans react to, when its not in german, and it would definately give Indy away as being an American. There is the sign that says Venice this way, Berlin the other, like those are the only two points that are of any consequence in Austria. The entire movie is driven to get to the stunt scenes, embrace the popular christian faith as to reinforce basic morality without becoming preachy as their is no substance to this movie, and show a humorous coming together between Indy and his father. Nazi's are stupid and as Stevie says, its a get out of jail free card to abuse a Nazi. Its broad strokes history that in retrospect Nazi's were bad, they burned books, Indy saved the day. This is the worst of the original trilogy by far, and even though its not exactly a reality based series by any means, a lot of the solutions that are made in this movie are so impractical that it head scratching. I do love the Sean Connery, especially his well now what do you want to talk about speach, or that they both diddled the same girl. There is definately style in this movie, but I think the creator became too comfortable in that style and quit trying, not as bad as crystal skull which is unwatchable, but still very shallow film. Great effects and do have to watch it without thinking too hard. Great visuals. Definately worth watching though, at least once.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Special Edition) Feature

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Special Edition) Overview

The third installment in the widely beloved Spielberg/Lucas Indiana Jones saga begins with an introduction to a younger Indy (played by the late River Phoenix), who, through a fast-paced prologue, gives the audience insight into the roots of his taste for adventure, fear of snakes, and dogged determination to take historical artifacts out of the hands of bad guys and into the museums in which they belong. A grown-up Indy (Harrison Ford) reveals himself shortly afterward in a familiar classroom scene, teaching archeology to a disproportionate number of starry-eyed female college students in 1938. Once again, however, Mr. Jones is drawn away from his day job after an art collector (Julian Glover) approaches him with a proposition to find the much sought after Holy Grail. Circumstances reveal that there was another avid archeologist in search of the famed cup — Indiana Jones' father, Dr. Henry Jones (Sean Connery) — who had recently disappeared during his efforts. The junior and senior members of the Jones family find themselves in a series of tough situations in locales ranging from Venice to the most treacherous spots in the Middle East. Complicating the situation further is the presence of Elsa (Alison Doody), a beautiful and intelligent woman with one fatal flaw: she's an undercover Nazi agent. The search for the grail is a dangerous quest, and its discovery may prove fatal to those who seek it for personal gain. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade earned a then record-breaking million in its first week of release.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Special Edition) Specifications

Not as good as the first one, but better than the second. That’s been the consensus opinion regarding Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the final installment in Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’ original adventure trilogy, throughout the nearly two decades since its 1989 theatrical release. It’s a fair assessment. After the relatively dark and disturbing Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989) recalls the sheer fun of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). With its variety of colorful locations, multiple chase scenes (the opening sequence on a circus train, with River Phoenix as the young Indy, is one of the best of the series, as is the boat chase through the canals of Venice), and cloak-and-dagger vibe, it’s the closest in tone to a James Bond outing, which director Spielberg has noted was the inspiration for the trilogy in the first place; what’s more, it harkens back to Raiders in its choice of villains (i.e., the Nazis--Indy even comes face to face with Hitler at a rally in Berlin) and its quest for an antiquity of incalculable value and significance (the Holy Grail, the chalice said to have been the receptacle of Christ's blood as he hung on the cross). Add to that the presence of Sean Connery, playing Indy’s father and having a field day opposite Harrison Ford, and you’ve got a most welcome return to form.

Special features include a six-minute introduction by Spielberg and Lucas, who discuss the grail as a metaphor for bringing Indy and his estranged father together and agree that Crusade is the funniest of the three films; "Indy’s Women," an American Film Institute tribute with leading ladies Karen Allen, Kate Capshaw, and Alison Doody each discussing her character (Capshaw candidly describes Temple of Doom’s Willie Scott as "whiny, petulant, and annoying"); "Indy’s Friends and Enemies," a look at the films’ various villains and sidekicks; plus storyboards and photo galleries. --Sam Graham
