Studio: Hip Hop Task Force, Vol. II

Studio: Hip Hop Task Force, Vol. II Review

I liked the movie. Finally a movie with a message. Usually these movies are all the same. I thought it was great to enlighten people about the pressures artists are under with some record labels. I appreciate the female FBI agent. I would also like to thank everyone for not putting a bunch of naked women in the movie. It shows real class. The acting of Dawued Saleh was great. He was really funny too. Plus he's a cutie. I will definitely look out for his next movie. I wish him much success in this business.

Studio: Hip Hop Task Force, Vol. II Overview

Three members of an elite government agency called the Hip-Hop Task Force are sent to Los Angeles to investigate the murder of up-and-coming rap star Elliot Jones. The investigation reveals the inner workings of the Feds involvement with the Hip Hop community and reveals the governments association with hot button topics such as "studio gangsters" and "the stop snitchin movement." As the investigation takes unexpected turns, the only sure thing is: lyrics can become deadly.

Holes (Full Screen Edition)

Holes (Full Screen Edition) Review

This is a great "feel good" movie, with a little more depth than most kids' movies. The DVD was in perfect condition when I got it.

Holes (Full Screen Edition) Overview

The award-winning bestseller comes to life in this phenomenally fun, adventure-filled movie starring Emmy Award-winner Shia LaBeouf (Outstanding Performer In A Children's Series, Disney Channel's EVEN STEVENS, 2000). Dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse, young Stanley Yelnats (LaBeouf) is sent to Camp Green Lake, a very weird place that's not green and doesn't have a lake. Once there, he's thrown headlong into the adventure of his life when he and his colorful campmates -- Squid, Armpit, Zigzag, Magnet, X-Ray, and Zero -- must dig a hole a day to keep the warden at bay. But why? Through it all, Stanley and company must forge fast friendships as they try to unearth the mystery of what's really going on in the middle of nowhere. Filled with humor and heartwarming messages of friendship and teamwork, HOLES is a treasure everyone will dig.

Holes (Full Screen Edition) Specifications

Fans of author Louis Sachar's book Holes will be delighted with this scrupulously faithful adaptation. After being wrongly found guilty of stealing a pair of sneakers, Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) gets sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correctional facility in the bed of a long-gone dry Texas lake. There--under the watchful eye of overseer Mr. Sir (a zesty Jon Voight), sneakily mean therapist Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson, O Brother Where Art Thou?), and the cool and cruel Warden (Sigourney Weaver)--Stanley and dozens of other delinquents are forced to dig an endless series of holes that the Warden hopes will lead her to a precious secret left behind by a long-dead female outlaw (Patricia Arquette). Sachar's book is beloved for its vivid characters and suspenseful plot; by sticking close to its source, Holes has become a dynamic, exciting, and surprisingly touching movie. --Bret Fetzer

Inuyasha, Volume 20: Curse of the Dark Priestess

Inuyasha, Volume 20: Curse of the Dark Priestess Review

The first episode, "Fateful Night in Togenkyo, Part II" concludes one of the more pointless plot detours in the series. It's weak on nearly every level. For some reason this is one element of the manga that appears out of order; whatever the reason, they could have dispensed with this. At least other plot detours like "The Lake of the Water God" were only one episode.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, the next two episodes are excellent. The modestly named "The Beautiful Sister Apprentices" is one of the best stand alone episodes in the series thus far. The story centers on Sango, and two young girls who wish to become demon-slayers, but involves much more than that. There's a strong moral message in this episode, about living a strong life, looking after your family, your friends, and the person you love. I can't think of a better episode in terms of utilizing the impressive soundtrack of the show; nearly every scene includes one of the better tracks found on soundtracks 1 and 2. There's comedy, action, drama, all well blended. This is one of those episodes you'll wish was an hour long, rather than just a half-hour. Of the 70 episodes I've seen, this one would make my top 10, maybe even my top 5.

The final episode, "The 50 Year Old Curse of the Dark Priestess" begins a five episode sub-plot that is very good, though you'll be frustrated that it ends here, so quickly. Much like the first movie Kagome is forced, this time through a curse, to turn the sacred arrow on Inu-Yasha, shades of Kikyo 50 years before!

If you can wait it might be better to purchase an entire season's worth of episodes when they are relased together (season 1 so far is the only one available in this format).

Inuyasha, Volume 20: Curse of the Dark Priestess Overview

Although these episodes contain some dramatic action, the stories focus on the emotional bonds that link the characters. By working together, Kagome, Shippo, Miroku, and Inu-Yasha defeat the gargantuan "sage" who sought to create an elixir of immortality. Director Yusunao Aoki uses CG skillfully to show the destruction of a cursed tree by Kagome and Inu-Yasha. Sango and Miroku continue their cautious courtship--until Miroku makes yet another ill-considered pass. Shippo watches and sighs, "Please don't let me grow up to be like him." The adventure takes a sinister turn when Naraku summons Tsubaki, the Dark Priestess who tried to steal the Shikon Jewel from Kikyo a half-century earlier. Tsubaki uses her evil magic to take possession of Kagome and make her attack Inu-Yasha, but the teenage heroine proves more difficult to control than the sorceress anticipated. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

Saber Marionette J (Collection 2)

Saber Marionette J (Collection 2) Review

On this DVD you can find episodes 10 to 17 of Saber Marionette J. Saber Marionette consists of Saber Marionette J (TV series, 25 episodes), Saber Marionette J Again (OVA, or direct-to-video release, 6 episodes) and Saber Marionette J to X (TV series, 25 episodes plus one "special" episode, not aired on Japanese TV but instead released as an OVA).

The first few episodes in this DVD will show you how the adventures in Gartlant turned out. The middle episodes allow for some fun to be had, and some character development for Lime, Cherry, Bloodberry and Otaru. In episodes 15, 16 and 17, Saber Marionette J starts the turn from funny, light comedy, to serious, heavy-hitting drama. But not an "overdone" drama, there are always funny moments, especially with Hanagata.

What I've always like the most of Saber Marionette J, and what makes it my all-time favorite (followed only, and very closely, by Saber Marionette J to X... and J Again but not as close) are the "serious", dramatic episodes. I'm a very emotional person, and there is nothing I've seen on any other anime series as beautiful and tear inducing as the last episodes of Saber Marionette J. Most of those episodes will be on DVD Collection 3, but on Collection 2, the change can be felt. You'll get to understand some of the characters a great deal more... After you've seen some of these episodes, go back to Collection 1, and watch carefully... I bet you'll see some things you hadn't noticed before...

As for nudity, as with Saber Marionette in general, there is almost none. Well... there's only one moment when you'll get to see Otaru naked, but from the back, but it's a VERY funny moment, and it's not done in an "improper" way. Oh... and you'll see Bloodberry with not that much clothes on, for about 10 seconds, but again, is not done in an "offending" way, and is all in good fun. The "rating" for Saber Marionette is "13 and Up", I believe, but I myself would show it to anyone... Parts of the plot may be hard to understand for the very little ones, but I'm sure they'll like everything else.

As for the DVD, the quality is great. The picture quality is crystal-clear. Contrary to what happened with Collection 1, I've yet to hear of problems with DVD players failing to play the discs correctly. My brother tried it on his Playstation 2, and he told me it worked OK. I've had no problems whatsoever on my computer's DVD player.

This time around, you'll get as an extra a music video of Cherry. The music used for the video is the ending song "I'll be there". Like with Lime's video, turn-on the subtitles and pump up the volume!!! The video is very nicely done.

If by strange circumstances, you still don't have Collection 1, I'll tell you that the Saber Marionette DVD is trilingual and the voice acting in general is very nicely done. The languages are Japanese, English and Spanish. I've listened to all of the audio tracks and like them all. My favorite is the Spanish track. If you understand Spanish, let me tell you that Saber Marionette's Spanish dub is one of the best Spanish dubs I've ever heard. Totally cool. However, all audio tracks are well done.

If you already own Saber Marionette J DVD Collection 1, you probably will buy this one. I've seen all of the episodes already, and you won't regret getting Collection 2. If you don't already have Collection 1... Why not? Saber Marionette J is a great anime!!!

Saber Marionette J (Collection 2) Overview

The bizarre premise of this fan-favorite anime TV series gave it plenty of room to grow, leaving behind the mildly suggestive sitcom farce of its early episodes in favor of real suspense and imaginative science fiction extrapolation, elements that come increasingly to the fore in this second set of eight episodes. After wrapping up the first phase of the Japoness versus Garlant story arc elaborated in the first collection, our goof-ball hero Otaru and his nubile robot companions take a breather and confront some pressing personal issues. The most important new wrinkle is the budding humanity of Otaru's three love-struck "marionettes," Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry, experimental models outfitted with emotion-generating "maiden circuits." We now learn that these bio-engineered circuits have the capacity to learn and evolve, perhaps toward full-fledged human autonomy. It is suggested that with their help the all-male human settlements on Terra 2 (which for generations have been sustained only by cloning) may finally be able to reproduce again the old-fashioned way; in time they could even overcome the stagnant nostalgia that has turned every society on the planet into a retro theme-park copy of a dimly remembered Old Earth original. Presumably we'll have to wait for the next collection to learn if this promise of rebirth ever comes fully to fruition. Don't touch that dial! --David Chute

The Lemon Grove Kids Meet the Monsters - Trilogy

The Lemon Grove Kids Meet the Monsters - Trilogy Review

I can understand that something like this may be hard to swallow for the average genre fan - let alone the mainstream movie consumer.
But this IS what film making is all about!

Steckler has never been one of the guys who tried hard to produce "cult cinema" nor is he one of the craftsman cinematographers who aimed for the drive-in market to make a fast buck.
To me he is among the truest and most enthusiastic lovers of his trade who ever lived.
I don't even want to think about his films in a cinematic way. Like most of his films, I feel like I'm watching a gang of friends doing what they love. That is true for INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES, and even more for his LEMON GROVE films.

Caroline Brand is simply gorgeous and seeing Herb Robbins in yet one more of his weird cameos really makes my day.
I am not too familiar with the EAST END KIDS movies these films are an hommage to, but seeing today's vain attempts at creating mass-compatible comedy in different ways makes me appreciate these crazy antics nontheless.
This is innocence in its purest form!

Listening to Steckler's audio commentaries is always exciting and enlightening - and the fate of some of his acting friends brings more than one tear to my eyes.

If you are looking for a more accessible and artistic way into the world of Steckler, check out THRILL KILLERS for a start.
If you want to feel more familiar with his parodistic elements, watch RAT PFINK A BOO BOO.
But then return here to witness LEMON GROVE KIDS!

The world would be a better place with more people in the movie business sharing this man's enthusiasm and child-like activism!

Al Pacino Collection (The Devil's Advocate/Dog Day Afternoon/Heat)

Al Pacino Collection (The Devil's Advocate/Dog Day Afternoon/Heat) Review

You can look up the individual reviews. Of course some individual titles will go out of stock. Others may not be your favorite. However you will have friends and relatives that will want to compare Al's various characters. A single case makes the movies easier to keep track of and look better on your video storage wall. Being DVDs this is a one-time investment. With the advent of multiple DVD changers you will be able to keep Al ready at a moments notice. I tried buying individual as I had the money and found shipping was getting very expensive that way. So bite the bullet and buy the collection. There is also the Al Pacino Collection (1999)

Lexx: Series 3, Vol. 2

Lexx: Series 3, Vol. 2 Review

When Sci Fi first put Lexx on the air in the laste 1990's their was nothing quite like it EVER on TV. Original, Naughty, Twisted and highly entertaining to say the least. The three movies that came out first set the tone and layed the foundation. It is unfortunate that they cann not be purchased affordably on DVD at this time. Howerer, all of the main characters in their splendor appear here in their own very complete, unique and comical form in the Comlete Second Series. Stanely, Zev, Robot head, Kai and the Lexx all traveling randomly through the universe full of comedic horror and bizare adventures. I wouldn't recomend this to anyone under 18 or people who are "uptight" with its overt sexual references, but if you have an open mind this show will both entertain and refresh you to the possibities of life and adventure in the universe. Too bad the last two seasons ended so horribly. In my opinion the last few years of the show were as painful and horrible to watch as most anything else now on commercial TV. Having gotten that off of my chest, the movies and the second season (which I am highly recomending here)remain well worthwhile, full of creativity, wonder and adventure as few shows on modern TV have been able to capture in the past ten years. Not recomended for the Moral Majority, it is no wonder the show appeared during the Clinton Administration and was hindered during the last few seasons by a lack of creative writing, money and what seemed to be an effort to make it "politically correct and sanitized for our protection" in the end. Neverthless, Stan, Zev, Robot head, Kai and Lexx remain for me one of the most entertaining Sci Fi comedy groups of all time.

Lexx: Series 3, Vol. 2 Overview

Media Type: DVD

Lexx: Series 3, Vol. 2 Specifications

We've seen Xev in the shower, Stanley without his hat, and even the inside of 790's head. So seeing Kai in the nude was only a matter of time. Following the dilemma of "Gondola," Stan and Xev are lost among the schizophrenic denizens in "K-Town" and eventually found by a dead assassin whose biomechanical systems are malfunctioning. It takes a shock reappearance of season 2's universe-destroying Mantrid to make sense of his groin-located repair mechanism. In "Tunnels" Kai, Stan, and Xev are split up, with Kai suffering the red tape of petty bureaucracy in Hog Town and Stan and Xev descending 39,000 steps. Stan bumps into show writer Lex Gigeroff making a cameo as insane surgeon Doctor Rainbow, and escape is determined by another death and resurrection from the enigmatic Prince (Nigel Bennett). At this halfway point in the season, the viewer should be carefully questioning this season's premise. --Paul Tonks
